Conspiracy Theories and Secret Societies
For Dummies
In London's Hyde Park, there's a place called
Speaker's Corner, where anyone can preach or shriek anything they like. There
have been famous and brilliant people who've made speeches there, and there have
been an awful lot of cranks, wackos, and madmen in the park, too. So, how do you
tell the difference between a cautionary reporter of impending calamity from a
madman off his meds? Too little skepticism risks falling down the rabbit hole
into a twisted wonderland of circular logic, but too much skepticism risks
overlooking something critical that may become tomorrow's tragic
headline.
Conspiracy Theories & Secret Societies For
Dummies covers the most famous--and infamous--conspiracy theories throughout
history, including the assassination of JFK, the death of Princess Diana, Area
51, Moon landing hoaxes, Elvis sightings, and the 9/11 "truth movement," along
with secret societies like Freemasons, Skull and Bones, Rosicrucians, the Mafia,
and Ninjas. Authors Christopher Hodapp (Solomon's Builders, Freemasons For
Dummies) and Alice Von Kannon (The Templar Code For Dummies) take you on a
lively, balanced trip through the world of conspiracism and
secrecy.
Creepy Cute Crochet: Zombies, Ninjas,
Robots, and More!

amigurumi for breakfast.

patterns for zombies, ninjas, Vikings, vampires, aliens, robots, and even Death
himself. Each easy-to-follow pattern is presented with step-by-step diagrams,
hilarious commentary, and full-color photographs of the creatures in their
natural environments. Plus each pattern is ranked according to difficulty so
that even beginners can share in the fun.
The scary-cute photographs, accessible text, and
illustrated patterns are sure to be a hit with indie crafters, angsty teens, and

This is the way Christian fiction should be
written. No cardboard Christian cut-outs of sweet angelic women none of us can
relate to. These women are real, just the kind of women I find in my own
community. We/they are real, they struggle with their faith and how to live it
out in the real world with real life problems and in real life situations. After
reading this book you will be affirmed as I was not only as a woman, but as an
authentic Christian woman. This book does not hit you over the head with a
preachy message, but through the lives of these women you will see real faith,
lived out in the real world, from real women. No cardboard Christian cut-outs
here.

The Potluck Club and The Potluck Catering Club are
great! There is finally someone writing Christian fiction for and about mature
women. The situations are real. The characters are not perfect, have secrets,
made and make mistakes just like you and me. They love and care for one another
and for their families the same as the readers do. It is such fun to follow
their lives.
Things are as exciting as ever in Summitt View,CO
where the ladies of the Potluck Club are concerned. The ladies and their friends
and family are people I would really like to know. I would really enjoy being a
member of the club and be in on the action. I have read all three of the books
in the series and they are great. I think that anyone who enjoys a good story
about "just folks" would love this book. It is so easy to feel a part of the
story. Trust me, read the Potluck Club series and you, too, will want more
stories about the ladies and their friends.
"Dust To Dust" is another "up all night read" from
master storyteller, Tami Hoag. The pages turn fast to uncover the answers to all
questions that arise as the story unfolds.
Tami Hoag is at the top of her craft; she keeps the
plot moving, throwing in shocking twists, while balancing everything with
believable characters.
Fans of Hoag, as well as fans of police
procedurals, will enjoy this one.
Allison Weaver writes an excellent memoir exploring
her difficult youth and experience at a "therapeutic" boarding school. Weaver's
writing convey's the emotional and physical pain common among a generation of
successful parents and cultural affluence. Beyond Weaver's excellent writing,
the reader is lucky enough to find an honest insight into her own personal
struggles growing up. Most importantly she shares experiences that are similar
to so many parents, children and adults. The adulthood reflection allows Weaver
to effectively examine her own struggles, choices and choices her family made.
The book is a must read for any parent whose child, whether in 13 or 18, has
struggled in school, acted out, dealt with depression, or used illegal
substances.
In the Still of the Night: The Strange
Death of Ronda Reynolds and Her Mother's Unceasing Quest for the
Truth
I usually read almost everything Ann Rule writes. I
tend to enjoy true crime a bit more than fiction- since it really happened this
way, it tends to be more interesting to me. This one has a different ending than
most- it spans over a period of a dozen years or so and it is more of a tale of
a distraught mother's insistence that a case does not get dropped. Rule doesn't
have her usual opportunity to wrap it up by "getting the bad guy", but then
that's how it goes sometimes. It was still very interesting and I really do plan
to check back on her website in the future to see if they got him.

This is a fascinating slice of life in modern day
London with Amy as the anchor of the entertaining story line. Each of the key
players has issues that frighten them, but the underlying premise is as bad as
these seem the world will breathe tomorrow. That enchanting generalization also
detracts slightly from the specificity of the tsuris like Brian's terror of
going bankrupt, Victoria's fear of inadequacy and Amy's efforts to be a working
single mom. Still fast-paced with a touch of jocularity, fans will enjoy this
lighthearted contemporary.
I thought this book was very funny. The main
character thinks, says and does alot of things that the average career/homemaker
woman would love to do, but would never dare! It's a very easy read. It's a way
of looking at a serious subject in a humorous way. The characters are great.
They are very easy to identify with, although you might not want to admit that!
A great, witty book to read if you want a break from all the books out there
that are supposed to give you something to think about. Read it and have
fun.
This story is told in diary fashion, with Mole
writing in the first person. In many ways, it's like watching a reality TV show.
Mole has a much more important view of himself than what really is the case, and
it's a hoot watching the train wreck unfold. There are a number of current event
themes running through the couple of years covered by the diary, mainly centered
around the start of the Iraq war. I'm sure having a good grasp of British life
would make a few of the things more clear to this American reader, but it really
doesn't matter. It was all too funny and felt all too real...
My next step is to check out the first four Adrian
Mole novels... If they are anything like this, I'll be losing a couple more
weekends to these pages.
I picked up this book for two reasons. First, the
main character, Cyn, was in the advertising business. Second, I thought the
premise sounded interesting. Cyn takes over another women's identity, who has
wronged her in the past. I was pretty disappointed on both fronts. The whole
advertising business aspect wasn't very realistic, even for a chick-lit book. As
far as the plotline goes, the author tried way too hard to make Cyn likable. I
ended up hating her because she was so gosh darn nice. The whole
identity-stealing sounded great, but came out pretty lame as well. A below par
fluffy read.
There was some decent action in the plot and some
good suspense, especially amongst the Cuban conspirators. However, the character
development could have been better and the connections between the various
characters are rather tenuous. I sometimes paused and wondered why certain
people were motivated to carry out the actions they had. Anyway, the book is OK
but not Frey's best. I recommend for his most ardent fans.

Last Chance to Get It Right!: How to Avoid
Eight Deadly Mistakes Made with Money
Between Social Security uncertainty and uneasiness
in the stock market, Americans today face a more uncertain financial future than
at any time in decades. Ironically, our response to this growing emergency is to
spend more, save less, and put off necessary preparations until
tomorrow.
Practice is not easy, relationships are not easy,
being a driven and compassionate mother and woman are not easy, and Patsy makes
that painfully clear. You come to cheer on her thoughts of running away from it
all and returning to a simpler time. If anyone who practices modern day
healthcare does not share this fantasy, then they are not present to the
challenges of today's practice. Patsy, more than any other writer in this time,
has the skill to take us into a world where tragedy, joy and tedium mix every
time the exam door closes behind another woman.
Karl Taro Greenfeld's new memoir Boy ALone is a
searing account of growing up in a family with an autistic sibling. In a world
where autism is rising exponentially, we hear all too rarely from the brothers
and sisters of autistic children. Here Greenfeld describes, sometimes in
harrowing detail, the strains of living with someone who is severely autistic.
The family's attention inevitably centers on Noah, the autistic brother.
Greenfeld deals honestly and compassionately with his family's struggle to find
an answer to Noah's condition and takes a cold, hard look at what autism means
for the three generations of his family who cope with it. This beautifully
written book is not just an account of a family dealing with extraordinary
circumstances but a reflection on the meaning of family and a powerful portrait
of childhood.
Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood
with Britain in Its Darkest, Finest Hour
In Citizens of London, Lynne Olson has written a
work of World War II history even more relevant and revealing than her acclaimed
Troublesome Young Men. Here is the behind-the-scenes story of how the United
States forged its wartime alliance with Britain, told from the perspective of
three key American players in London: Edward R. Murrow, Averell Harriman, and
John Gilbert Winant. Drawing from a variety of primary sources, Olson skillfully
depicts the dramatic personal journeys of these men who, determined to save
Britain from Hitler, helped convince a cautious Franklin Roosevelt and a
reluctant American public to support the British at a critical time.
The three—Murrow, the handsome, chain-smoking head
of CBS News in Europe; Harriman, the hard-driving millionaire who ran FDR’s
Lend-Lease program in London; and Winant, the shy, idealistic U.S. ambassador to
Britain—formed close ties with Winston Churchill and were drawn into Churchill’s
official and personal circles. So intense were their relationships with the
Churchills that they all became romantically involved with members of the prime
minister’s family: Harriman and Murrow with Churchill’s daughter-in-law, Pamela,
and Winant with his favorite daughter, Sarah.
Others were honorary
“citizens of London” as well, including the gregarious, fiercely ambitious
Dwight D. Eisenhower, an obscure general who, as the first commander of American
forces in Britain, was determined to do everything in his power to make the
alliance a success, and Tommy Hitchcock, a world-famous polo player and World
War I fighter pilot who helped save the Allies’ bombing campaign against
Germany.
Citizens of London, however, is more than just the
story of these Americans and the world leaders they aided and influenced. It’s
an engrossing account of the transformative power of personal diplomacy and,
above all, a rich, panoramic tale of two cities: Washington, D.C., a lazy
Southern town slowly growing into a hub of international power, and London, a
class-conscious capital transformed by the Blitz into a model of stoic grace
under violent pressure and deprivation. Deeply human, brilliantly researched,
and beautifully written, Citizens of London is a new triumph from an author
swiftly becoming one of the finest in her field.

This is an enjoyable book, although not Frey's
best. This book will take you through many twists and turns in a fast paced
action thriller. It's definitely worth reading, but don't get your hopes up too
high -- especially if you are expecting a thriller to match his book The
Takeover.
On the first day of the Somme enlisted railwayman
Jim Stringer lies trapped in a shell hole, smoking cigarette after cigarette
under the bullets and the blazing sun. He calculates his chances of survival -
even before they departed for France, a member of Jim's unit had been found
dead. During the stand-off that follows, Jim and his comrades must operate by
night the vitally important trains carrying munitions to the Front, through a
ghostly landscape of shattered trees where high explosive and shrapnel shells
rain down. Close co-operation and trust are vital. Yet proof piles up of an
enemy within, and as a ferocious military policeman pursues his investigation
into the original killing, the finger of accusation begins to point towards Jim
himself...
The police procedural is well written and cleverly
designed as is the private investigation by Carole and Jude. However, what makes
Simon Brett's whodunit so much fun is the amusing dysfunctional relationship
between the haughty know it all Carole and the Fethering locals. Twelve
championship rounds later Carole has been snipped, nipped and dipped so that she
has become localized.
The interaction between the two female protagonists
turn THE BODY ON THE EBACH into a fascinating amateur sleuth tale. Jude's mellow
attitude contrasts with Carole's up tight demeanor, but their interplay forces
Jude to take a step back while loosening Carole a bit. The who-done-it is fun
supplemented in part by the official position of the local police. Simon Brett
provides his audience with an insightful look at small village life in an
insular British hamlet. The opening gamut in the Carole-Jude mysteries seems to
forecast a long running series to the delight of sub-genre fans.
This is a very funny book! Two for the Dough, the
second book in the Stephanie Plum series. Stephanie , bounty hunter gets a new
case to find Kenny Mancuso who is accused of killing his best friend and jumping
bail. Stephanie still is getting help from bounty hunter Ranger and cop Joe
Morelli. Kenny is Joe's cousin and he is also looking for him . Grandma Mazur
who is a trip helps Stephanie search the funeral homes for Kenny. Grandma Mazur
is very funny and she loves going to funeral home's already. Stephanie also
agrees to find missing coffins while she is in search of Kenny. This book was
funnier then the first it will have you laughing out loud. The pages just seem
to fly; it is very fast paced. I can't wait to read the next one, and I would
recommend this series to everybody.

The Fethering amateur sleuths are consistently some
of the most entertaining (see latest Fethering caper (see DEATH UNDER THE DRYER,
THE BODY ON THE BEACH and THE STABBING IN THE STABLES). The latest one holds up
that tradition as an enjoyable whodunit that showcases the social world of the
betting club and somewhat the non acceptance of foreign students in England.
Carole is at her best as she struggles with just entering the bet shop and with
seeking her new granddaughter if that means seeing her ex. Jude escorts Carole
to places she would never dared go before.
Interspersed with this witty and intellectual
dialogue are comments on society and its structure. He specifically comments
multiple times of the degradation of women in society to the lowest social
status. Only men are educated in Flatland. Interestingly, he paints a picture of
an authoritarian society in which people are judged by their shapes and angles.
This reflecting the Victorian societal values around him at the time of his
writing.
Flatland is recommended to all those who seek to
enlighten their view of the universe and of potential universes. It is
especially recommended to those seeking higher knowledge of any type. Flatland
is truly a multi-dimensional experience and worth every minute.
Fan though I am of this series, I will admit that
not every installment has been an absolutely riveting read. Which was why I
found "The Witness at the Wedding" to be such a pleasure. To being with the
storyline was a truly tantalising one -- a murder that had been committed about
30 years ago and that's still affecting those concerned. And then there was the
pacing -- Simon Brett did a fantastic job of subtly layering on the suspense,
even as he maintained the even pacing. And then of course there was the well
developed and defined characters -- I especially liked that Carole is still the
same prickly and slightly prejudiced character that she was when the series
first started. Of course she has changed slightly for the better, but in
essentials she's still very much the same Carole Seddon here as she was in the
first Fethering mystery, "The Body on the Beach."
In all I spent a wonderful afternoon wrapped up in
this book, and would recommend to anyone who's looking for a nice British "cozy"
to sit down and curl up with.
I was hooked before the end of the first chapter of
Murder on the Mind. Who is Jeff Resnick and why is he having visions of a deer
hunt? Then, after being visciously mugged, he wakes up with more issues than he
had while he was just unemployed and down-on-his-luck. His half-brother takes
him to Buffalo to recuperate. Here L.L. Bartlett add layers to the mystery
surrounding Jeff. However, it wasn't just the visions that I wanted to know
about; I wanted to know about the brothers and why they seemed so estranged.
Where was the rest of Jeff's family? I wanted to know about Richard, the
half-brother and Brenda, his girlfriend. Jeff seems to know as little about
Richard as he does himself. Bartlett manages to weave a great mystery with
equally great characterizations. Every page turned takes you deeper into the
visions that Jeff has, the murder(s) and his strained relationships. When I
finished 'Murder on the Mind' I wanted more. I anxiously await more Jeff Resnick
mysteries.
Catch Me If You Can: The True Story of a
Real Fake
Catch Me If You Can is Frank Abagnale's account of
his life as a con man. His book is thrilling, incredible, and true. When he was
16, Frank's parents separated and he ran away to New York City. Frank, armed
with supreme confidence, charm, and intelligence, successfully posed as an
airline pilot, attorney (he even passed the bar!), a physician, and a college
professor, while living the good life with millions of dollars he got from
passing bad checks in over 20 countries; and all of this before he was
twenty-one years of age.
Frank's wild exploits are told in a humerous,
quick-paced style that is very readable. The joy he found in living the high
life and romancing countless ladies around the world is matched by the the utter
despair he faced in a brutal French prison where he was entombed in solitary
confinement for months.
It's clear that Frank knew he was doing wrong, but
was so addicted to the high he got from conning that he didn't want to stop.
Frank is now a respected authority on counterfeiting and, in fact, teaches at
the FBI Academy. This is a very exciting book!

It promises to be a long, hotly seductive summer in
BODY HEAT as author Carly Phillips playfully uses the skill of physical therapy
to create a heated romance. Indeed, Phillips works massage therapy, water
therapy and glass lined workout rooms into erotic encounters that fuel the heat
to become a blazing inferno. In addition, the sympathetic characters and fast
paced plot keep the reader thoroughly absorbed. Provocative, seductive, and hot,
BODY HEAT is a keeper that comes very highly recommended.
What a book. This was hilariously funny. Stephanie
Plum is from NJ and having some money problems. Sold her furniture, her car has
gotten repo and next she will be needing a place to live if she doesn't come up
with an idea fast. She goes to see her cousin Vinnie ( Bail bondsman ) looking
for a job. The job had just been filled but the bounty hunter he used was having
surgery. Stephanie, newly employed as bounty hunter. After all you get 10% and
she would get 10k for bringing Joe Morelli in. Joe is a former cop and is
running from Murder One. Stephaine and Joe do go back to growing up. This was a
great book! Very funny, Ms. Evanovich really has a gift for writing a story in a
very refreshing way! The " who done it " I couldn't tell until it happened. The
pages just kept turning as the characters were very real, and
enjoyable!
I am quite impressed with the level of research the
authors have done for this tale. This is a time the general is familiar with,
but almost no one knows any details about. Benson and Golden share their
knowledge of both the big issues of the time and such mundane trivial items that
the mood is perfect. One can actually smell that Thames, hear the dock workers
and feel the oppressive fog. The mythology, both of that of the Protectors and
that of the lands they live in and protect, are exquisitely detailed.
If you are a fan of horror, gothic fiction, or of
either of the authors then Ghosts of Albion: Accursed is a fantastic
book.
Where "Accursed" had the required set up to bring
in new readers and thus a slower start, the action in "Witchery" begins right
away and the tension does not let up till the very end. But it is not all
action, there is also character development and carefully crafted plotting. The
world made believable because they take the time to make the people in it
believable. And students of Victorian age occult history and horror fiction fans
should look for some surprise "cameos" as well. The attention paid to research
by the authors is in and of itself rewarding; something many modern horror
writers fail to adequately do.
In the end you will be like me. Loving this story
and desperately wanting more from this world.
In BONE RATTLER, Pattison writes a brilliant
suspense novel that includes insights about the founding of our country, as well
as the spiritual nature of both Native Americans and the persecuted minorities
like the Scots who fled to these shores for refuge, freedom and a new life.
These disenfranchised people had to make up justice on the early frontier even
though they did not speak the same language, share similar cultures or espouse
the same religious views. How did this happen uniquely in pre-colonial America?
The crimes in this mystery encompass people from several distinct cultures
(Scottish, English, Huron, French, Iroquois, Dutch, German, Quaker, Jesuit etc).
BONE RATTLER focuses on the heroism inherent in maintaining identity or culture
in the face of great trials; the sacrifices made by the founders of our country;
and also the question of what law and justice mean and how they can be developed
and preserved. This novel truly is leagues beyond the average mystery! It is
hard to imagine a subject more relevant in our contemporary world than how
democracy can be created, and how disparate tribes and peoples can communicate
with and get along with one another. To have woven all of this into a fasciating
mystery is a triumph.

Master of suspense and #1 New York Times
bestselling author Brad Thor returns with his most riveting international
thriller yet.
A new administration and a new approach to dealing
with America's enemies have left covert counterterrorism operative Scot Harvath
without a job. But when American doctor Julia Gallo is kidnapped in Afghanistan,
the terms of her ransom leave the president with only one course of action.
In a dangerous assignment that the United States
government will deny any knowledge of, Scot Harvath must secretly infiltrate
Kabul's notorious Policharki Prison and free the man the kidnappers demand as
ransom - al-Qaeda mastermind, Mustafa Khan.
But when Harvath arrives, he quickly learns that
there is more to the kidnapping than anyone dares to admit. And as the
subterfuge is laid bare, Harvath must examine his own career of hunting down and
killing terrorists, and ask himself if he has what it takes to help one of the
world's worst go free.
Brimming with the kind of ripped-from-the-headlines
authenticity Brad Thor's internationally bestselling novels are known for, The
Apostle doubles down on the blockbuster success of The Last Patriot and
reaffirms Thor's status as the master of the political thriller.
In a distant galaxy, the atrocity of slavery was
alive and well, and young Thorby was just another orphaned boy sold at auction.
But his new owner, Baslim, is not the disabled beggar he appears to be: adopting
Thorby as his son, he fights relentlessly as an abolitionist spy. When the
authorities close in on Baslim, Thorby must ride with the Free Traders -- a
league of merchant princes -- throughout the many worlds of a hostile galaxy,
finding the courage to live by his wits and fight his way from society's lowest
rung. But Thorby's destiny will be forever changed when he discovers the truth
about his own identity....
Once in a great while a science fiction story is so
visionary, yet so close to impending scientific developments that it becomes not
only an accurate predictor, but itself the locus for new discoveries and
development. True Names by Vernor Vinge, first published in 1981, is such a
work.
The story—part memoir, part hard-hitting expose—of
a first-year law associate negotiating the arduous path through a system
designed to break those who enter it before it makes them.
Landing a job at a prestigious L.A. law firm,
complete with a six figure income, signaled the beginning of the good life for
Ian Graham. But the harsh reality of life as an associate quickly became
evident. The work was grueling and boring, the days were impossibly long, and
Graham’s main goal was to rack up billable hours. But when he took an unpaid pro
bono case to escape the drudgery, Graham found the meaning in his work that he’d
been looking for. As he worked to free Mario Rocha, a gifted young Latino who
had been wrongly convicted at 16 and sentenced to life without parole, the
shocking contrast between the quest for money and power and Mario’s desperate
struggle for freedom led Graham to look long and hard at his future as a
corporate lawyer.
Clear-eyed and moving, written with the drama and
speed of a John Grisham novel and the personal appeal of Scott Turow’s account
of his law school years, Unbillable Hours is an arresting personal story with
implications for all of us.
The First Family: Terror, Extortion,
Revenge, Murder, and the Birth of the American Mafia
Before the notorious Five Families who dominated
U.S. organized crime for a bloody half century, there was the one-fingered
criminal genius Giuseppe Morello–known as “The Clutch Hand”–and his lethal
coterie of associates. In The First Family, historian, journalist, and New York
Times bestselling author Mike Dash brings to life this little-known story,
following the rise of the Mafia in America from the 1890s to the 1920s, from the
lawless villages of Sicily to the streets of Little Italy. Using an impressive
array of primary sources–hitherto untapped Secret Service archives, prison
records, trial transcripts, and interviews with surviving family members–this is
the first Mafia history that applies scholarly rigor to the story of the Morello
syndicate and the birth of organized crime on these shores.
Progressing from small-time scams to counterfeiting
rings to even bigger criminal enterprises, Giuseppe Morello exerted ruthless
control of Italian neighborhoods in New York, and through adroit coordination
with other Sicilian crime families, his Clutch Hand soon reached far beyond the
Hudson River.
The men who battled Morello’s crews were themselves
colorful and legendary figures, including William Flynn, a fearless Secret
Service agent, and Lieutenant Detective Giuseppe “Joe” Petrosino of the New York
Police Department’s elite Italian Squad, whose pursuit of the brutal gangs
ultimately cost him his life.
Combining first-rate scholarship and
pulse-quickening action, and set amid rustic Sicilian landscapes and the streets
of old New York, The First Family is a groundbreaking account of the crucial
period when the American criminal underworld exploded with violent fury across
the nation.

Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared
Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too
A unique new approach to treating eating disorders
Eight million women in the United States suffer
from anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia. For these women, the road to recovery is a
rocky one. Many succumb to their eating disorders. Life Without Ed offers hope
to all those who suffer from these often deadly disorders. For years, author
Jennifer Schaefer lived with both anorexia and bulimia. She credits her
successful recovery to the technique she learned from her psychologist, Thom
Rutledge.
This groundbreaking book illustrates Rutledge's
technique. As in the author's case, readers are encouraged to think of an eating
disorder as if it were a distinct being with a personality of its own. Further,
they are encouraged to treat the disorder as a relationship rather than as a
condition. Schaefer named her eating disorder Ed; her recovery involved
"breaking up" with Ed * Shares the points of view of both
patient and therapist in this approach to treatment * Helps people see
the disease as a relationship from which they can distance themselves
* Techniques to defeat negative thoughts that plague eating disorder
patients
Prescriptive, supportive, and inspirational, Life
Without Ed shows readers how they too can overcome their eating
disorders.

Seven Life Lessons of Chaos: Spiritual
Wisdom from the Science of Change
Attempting to extract lessons for daily living from
the emerging science of chaos theory, Briggs, a professor of English at Western
Connecticut State University, and Peat, a British physicist, have produced an
often frustrating, intermittently suggestive guide. Chaos scientists seek hidden
patterns underlying apparently random events. By heeding their example, the
authors maintain, ordinary folk can learn to appreciate the interconnectedness
of all things, to go with the flow of events, to unlock creativity through
heightened tolerance for ambiguity and ambivalence, to pay attention to
subtlety, to act according to one's internal rhythms. Skipping fluidly from
irrational numbers to Zen paradoxes, from Vaclav Havel's notion of "the power of
the powerless" to the I Ching to the egalitarian, "self-organizing" interactions
of an Ojibway Indian community and Manhattan's food distribution system, the
authors use chaos as an overworked metaphor in a barrage of analogies,
speculative leaps, platitudes and anecdotes. Their unconvincing manual is
riddled with sentences like, "Positive butterfly power involves a recognition
that each individual is an indivisible aspect of the whole and that each chaotic
moment of the present is a mirror of the chaos of the future." Scores of
intriguing photographs (66 b&w; eight pages color), which form an integral
part of the book, reinforce points about the dynamics of change and the
liberating potential of chaos with images of colliding galaxies, Ice Age cave
paintings, a traffic jam, a craggy British coastline, plots of heart
rhythms.

Inside the Minds of Healthcare Serial
Killers: Why They Kill
In 2004, Charles Cullen was arrested and charged in
the deaths of more than 30 patients in his care. Crossing several jurisdictions
in seven counties in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, he was stopped after a
fifteen-year spree at ten institutions. While many people do not think of
healthcare workers as serial killers, their profession is disproportionately
represented among the serial killer population, and they tend to be more
prolific than other serial killers, having more opportunities, better cover, and
easy alibis. Healthcare professionals who kill have learned how to exploit the
atmosphere of trust in the healthcare community and to hasten deaths that may go
unnoticed in an already vulnerable arena. This book delves into the world of the
healthcare serial killer, looking at the special characteristics of the
different groups of murderers, the motives, the methods, and the
outcomes.
Crime specialists have long suspected that many
healthcare serial killers have gone undetected. Because it is easier to cover up
their crimes, it is harder to uncover that a crime has even been committed.
Here, Ramsland identifies some of the warning signs that a serial killer may be
on the loose in a healthcare setting. Further, she offers suggestions for reform
in the healthcare and criminal justice communities that would help identify
potential killers before they have a chance to strike, or strike again. Using
numerous real-life cases in every chapter, she provides a fuller picture of this
most deadly type of serial killer and helps readers understand how they work,
and how they can be stopped.

High Raw: A Simple Approach to Health,
Eating and Saving the Planet
High Raw gives the most comprehensible outline for
directing your own health that I've found yet. It is not a book that tells you
to take this herb for that illness, but rather a book that directs you in
setting your own goals for health, weight, energy, fitness and success, and then
gives really insightful and helpful systems for achieving them.In summary, his
goal is helping the reader achieve optimal health with no dogma, lots of
flexibility, keeping it fun, etc. A must read for anyone in taking their health
to the next level.

While this book does not go into great detail about
the treatment of specific diseases, by using the outlined methods and following
the provided guidelines to rebuild your health, you are likely to improve
anyway, whatever the name of the disease. Rather than fighting your disease, I
recommend you focus all your resources on improving your health. Your disease
may then disappear on its own. To show how simple, natural methods can be
very effective in overcoming medically incurable diseases, I mention an example
from The Food and Health of Western Man, by Dr. J. L. Mount. In five cases of
bowel cancer, surgery revealed that the cancer had already metastasized all over
the body. Therefore, these patients were just closed up again and sent home to
die. But instead of doing that, these five people, independently of each other,
became keen gardeners and from then on ate only home grown, organically raised
food. When they finally did die, 21 to 30 years later, no traces of cancer could
be found in post mortem examinations.
Beadweaving Brilliance - Make Beautiful
Jewelry as You Learn Off-loom Techniques
Just in time for holiday hand-made-gift-making,
comes this beautifully illustrated book that shows crafters how to create
colorful and unique beaded accessories. Using a single needle and thread,
readers will learn a variety of stitches, including herringbone, peyote (also
known as gourd), brick, square, right angle weave and African helix, to weave
beads into a flat fabric or 3-dimensional object. The off-loom beading technique
lends itself to fashioning striking accessories; and in Beadweaving Brilliance,
author Kumiko Mizuno offers precise instructions for 30 different projects that
will take even a novice beader no more than two hours to complete.
The book is divided into sections covering five
different types of accessories - rings, pendants, straps, bracelets and
necklaces - and also includes sections on basic techniques, color variations and
tools.
42 Rules of Social Media for Small
Business: A modern survival guide that answers the question 'What do I do with
Social Media'?
'42 Rules of Social Media for Small Business' is
the modern survival guide to effective social media communications and the
answer to the question, "what do I do with social media?" Written by
communications professional Jennifer Jacobson, this book is designed to help
working professionals find social media that fits their business and get the
most out of their social media presence.
From networking communication, to social branding,
'42 Rules of Social Media for Small Business' addresses specific rules of
engagement, as well as the fundamental approach to online, as opposed to
traditional, media. As part of the 42 Rules series, this book is designed to
quickly and effectively equip business professionals with the tools they need to
generate an effective customer community through social media, that translates
into customer loyalty, excitement for the brand, and return business that
eventually generates a dedicated customer base and increased revenue.
This book demystifies social media and teaches
readers why social media is important to their business and how they can
maximize their social media effectiveness.
This novel involves Germans, Russians, Israelis,
British, Americans, South Africans, and Libyans. Iles' extraordinary tale takes
the reader on a terrifying adventure into the past, which leads to the chilling
realities of the present, that could very well result in worldwide nuclear war.
His action scenes are so well written that they are almost visual, and certainly
bring this drama to life. The main characters are complex and well defined,
individually and in their relationships to each other. The ending will have you
on the edge of your seat.
In spite of the book's unnecessary length, and a
confusing narrative at the beginning, I do recommend "Spandau Phoenix" to fans
of mystery-thrillers and espionage novels. Bottom line - great plot and
characters overcome any flaws.
Innocent high school student April North gave her

of her newfound passion, she is ready to run away when she meets Craig, a
twenty-something playboy with a fast car and fast friends who shows her that sex
isn’t something to fear.
Craig’s world of cocktail parties and
casual flings is a side of adulthood April never imagined a lifestyle that, if
she isn’t ready for it, may spell her doom.

The Nightwatchman's Occurrence Book: And
Other Comic Inventions
A Flag on the Island is a collection of stories
including an expanded scene with a different perspective from his novel A House
for Mr. Biswas; a story appropriate for, but for some reason left out of, Miguel
Street; two stories about the residents and owners of a boarding house; and ends
with the title piece--a long unusual story about a man returning to a Caribbean
island where he once lived. Naipaul's previous collection of stories, Miguel
Street, was a wonderful description of life on Trinidad, and some of the stories
here have the same whimsical air, but for the most part I prefer his novels to
his stories. It's very hard for me to appreciate writing without an emotional
connection, and this is something most of these stories are missing,
particularly the title piece, which is long enough for character development but
seems devoid of any real feeling.
This book has everything: history, adventure,
espionage, even a dash of romance. It's a page turner, with not a wasted word,
and is unbelievably gripping. Definitely worth staying up all night and losing
sleep for. It's also thought-provoking. How do you cope with sheer horror on a
day-to-day basis without losing your sanity and humanity? Set in the
concentration camps of WWII, it answers (in its way) the question of why Hitler
never used his stockpile of poisonous gas. Get this book NOW and spread the
word!

After reading the first book, I realized I didn't
know much about Beatrix and her children's books, so I read "Beatrix Potter:
Artist, Storyteller, and Countrywoman" by Judy Taylor. (Another book that I
highly recommend.) Now I can see that Susan Wittig Albert is tackling and
mastering three tasks at once: weaving a ficticious mystery; setting it closely
against biographical and historical fact; and sprinkling the story with the kind
of animal insight and "dialogue" found in Potter's original tales. The result is
a wonderful and engaging narrative that is simply a joy a read. Yes, it's
"cozy," but it's also more comfortable and familiar than others of that genre.
Though she's been gone for more than 60 years,
Beatrix Potter's spirit lives today: not only in the reprints of her own work,
but also in this new series by Albert. How lucky for us!
Cheuse's busy follow-up to To Catch the Lightning
reaches frantically in multiple directions but lacks a center of narrative
gravity, resulting in a florid and off-kilter tale of slavery and forbidden
love. Nathaniel Pereira, son of a New York Jewish merchant, gets dispatched to
revive an uncle's South Carolina plantation, but his story is derailed by the
interspersed accounts of several generations of women driven from slavery in
Timbuktu to bondage in the United States. On a slave voyage, the brutality is as
vivid as the prose is lurid ("What happened next, we can never truly know,
unless we find ourselves forced into the immediate degradation sometimes
suffered by the victim, usually female, when man turns beast and instinct raw,
foul, animal, devilish, destructive instinct overpowers her"), and once the
plantation slave Liza becomes an object of purplish desire for Nathaniel (a
"tincture of desire now flavoring the spittle that we mingled in our mouths"),
readers will realize that things cannot end well. After the convoluted story
finds its way to a fiery conclusion, Cheuse tacks on a rushed and tidy
resolution that undermines the novel's strongest feature: its depiction of the
horrors of slavery.

I found the caracters and the plot mesmerizing. It
caught and kept my attention from the very start. I almost felt like I was right
there watching the tale unfold between Harper and the other caracters. It also
made me think of the very real dangers that the internet could hold, if the
information one doles out so readily on here is'nt watched over very
carefully. From a little country farmhouse in Mississippi to a large internet
company in New York there's romance, murders, and plenty of action to keep your
attention. Just my kind of reading!
The book is an edge of your seat thriller. I
couldn't even pick it up during the day time because once I started reading I
could. not. put. it. down. One night after having devoured a third of the book
in one sitting, I had to throw it down on the table and run away so I wouldn't
stay up all night reading. Some of the descriptions of the events in the story
were so vivid and powerful that I got goosebumps.
One more important thing: I don't think you need to
be a Christian to love this book. The book is definitely written from a Theistic
viewpoint, but it doesn't preach or force any particular view. I don't know if
Rob Stennett actually believes in the Rapture or not. All I know is that his
writing didn't insist either way, and that's a pretty remarkable accomplishment.
So, in conclusion, read this book. Better yet, buy
20 copies and pass them on to everyone who you love so that they can be so
blessed as well! Then come back and find me and we'll form a Rob Stennett fan
club. What are you waiting for?? Go!!
I have been a great fan of the Karp series and
eagerly await each new book. This one seems to lack the intensity the others
have. The Karp family is definitely not front and center in this one .... where
is the FAMILY! I feel like this book was done just to satisfy a deadline,
definitely not a honor to the series.
Third in the third series by Albert, we once again
visit Beatrix Potter's farm that serves as her refuge from her parents and
London society. As before, there are several mysteries woven into the plot,
while several of them are amongst the many animals that are known to populate
Potter's fictional children's books. Upon Beatrix's arrival to the Lake
District, her farm has been overrun with rats. Beatrix soon manages to employ
several cats to assist in the problem, but she is unwittingly helped by an
unknown resident of her farm, who then has to take care of the cat problem once
the rat problem has been addressed. The animal denizens and their lives are just
as interesting as the humans in Albert's Cottage Tales series - and Beatrix is a
character that readers will come to love and respect just as the villagers have,
using her observational abilities to assist in many ways without intruding upon
the privacy of others.
Turning Angel, is a great thriller. The crux of the
story is about US high school teens growing up quickly and falling to
temptation. This is hastened by the arrival of a Croatian exchange student who
helps vitalise the school drug industry. The top Apple pie blonde student
(sterotyped) is found murdered and raped and then it is discovered she was
having an affair with the local, popular and married town Doctor. He becomes a
suspect and Penn Cage seeks to absolve his friend, despite doubts over his
moraility and innocence. Well written with strong characters, a little far
fetched in places (deeply drugged with heroin but still able to assemble a bomb)
but recommended.

Blood Memory ranks right up there with the best of
Greg Iles' novels to date, such as The Quiet Game and Mortal Fear. He is really
talented at weaving complicated suspense with interesting characters, and in
this book he returns to the Mississippi setting he knows so well. There are even
appearances from characters and a storyline from two of his previous books, so
that's a little extra fun for readers familiar with his work. What makes Iles'
books even more appealing is the range of topics that he explores. Each book is
a well-written suspense tale, and Blood Memory is no exception. I think it's his
best book by far since The Quiet Game. The topical subject matter of Blood
Memory is a troubling reality. While the basic plot idea of vengeance in this
arena has been tried by other authors, Iles tells a more powerful story across
the spectrum of predator and prey. This book really has a lot going for it:
classic Iles suspense, detailed forensics, strong female characters, and vivid
storytelling. Not only is it a hard book to put down, it's also one that will be
hard to forget.
There was so much more to this story that kept me
at the edge of the seat that I wish I could tell about, but it would simply give
away too much. The character development is flawless and so is the dialogue in
this non stop ride of a thriller. The science behind cancers and diseases is
well presented and very interesting while the main heroine is as real to me as
my best friend. True Evil dealt with some really bad people and the quest to
catch them while engaging in an iron battle of wits.
I can't wait to read more of this author as this
was a delectable and engrossing book, something that will haunt my memory for a
long time. I promise that the ending will be even better than one can predict
and the book will leave a deep hunger for more good reading. This story will
leave any bookworm full to the brim and deeply satisfied!
I believe Black Cross was his best work, this his
second, Mortal Fear third and Spandau Phoenix fourth. Funny that most people
have read only Spandau Phoenix. I do have one complaint - please hurry up on
your next book. Stephen King may be from dreaded New England, but for God's
sake, at least he puts out a book every now and then! Maybe then more would
learn there are great alternatives to the latest drivel from the big
boys.
L.A. Requiem has its funny stuff, but it's darker
than the rest. The book deals more with Joe Pike and his background. At times I
felt like I was eavesdropping on Pike, knowing things about him he probably
doesn't want us to know. Crais' portrayal of L.A. is a character of itself. The
fires in the hills act as a metaphor for the conflict/tension building. The plot
is great; they're searching for a killer. But Crais' use of language, thought,
description really supercedes the plot.
I've always been a big fan of Crais and grab as
much of him as I can. I recommend him all the time at our store. L.A. Requiem is
outstanding and more readers will take notice.
All in all Dead Sleep is an exciting, smart-paced
book mixing a thriller scenario with aspects of the typical police procedural. I
did find myself having to deal with a couple of small quibbles, such as the
photojournalist outsmarting the entire FBI when it comes to investigation and
psychoanalysis. However, they were minor compared to the entertainment provided
by another imaginative story courtesy of Mr Iles.

Elvis Cole (the man around whom the book is
written) is a great PI, extremely introspective with lots of endearing
qualities, and if you enjoy reading authors who develop their cast over the
course of a series of books, then I would have to say that Robert Crais has the
franchise for you. He seems every bit as good as Robert B. Parker, perhaps more
so since this book has the "thriller thing" going for it.
There is nothing quite like owning a stylish,
unique handmade bag that you have created yourself. Jenny Rolfe has used
quilting and free machine embroidery techniques to create a stunning collection
of bags for all occasions. All the techniques are explained fully, including how
to make your own fabrics and cords to give your bags that really personal touch.
The fabrics used include cottons, silks and felts, as well as the more exotic
metallic organza, chiffon, velvet and netting. Variegated and metallic machine
threads add texture, and the bags are futher embellished with beads, sequins,
shisha mirrors and wire in various colours. Detailed step-by-step photographs
accompany easy-to-follow text, and a sequence of projects illustrate how to
construct, decorate and complete a range of different-shaped bags - one for
every style and occasion.
The Everything Thai Cookbook: From Pad Thai
to Lemongrass Chicken Skewers
I was a bit intimidated to try to cook Thai food.
It just seemed like it would be so difficult! The other Thai cookbooks I've
looked at seemed a little too scary- how am I supposed to shop for the
ingredients if I don't know what they are? This cookbook did a GREAT job of
explaining things to me- from the ingredients to the cooking methods involved.
Even better, the food is AWESOME! The meals are similar to what I get at my
favorite sit-down Thai restaurant. This book is well worth the money for anyone
who enjoys Thai food.

Do One Nice Thing: Little Things You Can Do
to Make the World a Lot Nicer
A few years ago, Debbie Tenzer was feeling
overwhelmed by all the crises in the news. But rather than give in to despair,
she thought, Maybe I can’t solve our big problems, but I know I can do
something. She realized that helping doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive
or time-consuming. You can help simply by doing one nice thing. So that’s what
she vowed to do, one day a week. Not every day–she says she’s not that nice–but
once a week was a promise she could keep.
So she started a website, DoOneNiceThing.com, and
each week she posted an easy way to help people around town or across the globe.
Good news traveled fast, and now Debbie is the leader of a worldwide kindness
movement with fellow Nice-o-holics in ninety countries. They’ve sent . .
.
• cans of food to food banks and schools •
notebooks to soldiers who will give them to Afghan children • gifts to
foster children whose birthdays are overlooked • and much more
Do One Nice Thing has many new, easy ideas for
small deeds that anyone can do (and includes explicit information on how exactly
to execute the ideas, so you don’t have to go digging for information or
resources). There’s even a chapter of nice things you can do in minutes without
leaving your desk.
Join Debbie and her army of Nice-o-holics, and give
the world some help–and some hope. Best of all, the more help you give, the more
hopeful you’ll feel. And before you know it, you won’t be able to
stop.
This how-to-change manual demonstrates why the
right attitude is the key to personal success. In a fast-paced reality check,
the book presents 15 "right" attitudes designed to help readers achieve success
and happiness.

After the Affair: Healing the Pain and
Rebuilding Trust When a Partner Has Been Unfaithful
For the 70 percent of couples who have been
affected by extramarital affairs, this is the only book to offer proven
strategies for surviving the crisis and rebuilding the relationship -- written
by a nationally known therapist considered an expert on infidelity.
When I was 15, I was raped. That was nothing
compared to your affair. The rapist was a stranger; you, I thought, were my best
friend.
There is nothing quite like the pain and shock
caused when a partner has been unfaithful. The hurt partner often experiences a
profound loss of self-respect and falls into a depression that can last for
years. For the relationship, infidelity is often a death blow.
After the Affair is the first book to help
readers survive this crisis. Written by a clinical psychologist who has been
treating distressed couples for 22 years, it guides both hurt and unfaithful
partners through the three stages of healing: Normalizing feelings, deciding
whether to recommit and revitalizing the relationship. It provides proven,
practical advice to help the couple change their behavior toward each other,
cultivate trust and forgiveness and build a healthier, more conscious intimate
partnership.
How Can I Forgive You?: The Courage to
Forgive, the Freedom Not To
Abrahms Spring, a clinical psychologist, follows up
her bestselling After the Affair with this new self-help manual that aims to
provide a better way to forgive or not forgive others. With the assistance of
her husband, and in clear, insightful writing, Abrahms Spring draws on many case
studies to fully analyze four categories of forgiveness: cheap forgiveness,
refusing to forgive, acceptance and genuine forgiveness.
Until now, we have been taught that forgiveness is
good for us and that good people forgive. Dr. Spring, a gifted therapist and the
award-winning author of After the Affair, proposes a radical, life-affirming
alternative that lets us overcome the corrosive effects of hate and get on with
our lives—without forgiving. She also offers a powerful and unconventional model
for genuine forgiveness—one that asks as much of the offender as it does of
us.
This bold and healing book offers step-by-step,
concrete instructions that help us make peace with others and with ourselves,
while answering such crucial questions as these: * How do
I forgive someone who is unremorseful or dead? * When is forgiveness
cheap? * What is wrong with refusing to forgive? * How can
the offender earn forgiveness? * How do we forgive ourselves for
hurting another human being?

Ireland and among its people overseas. Taking into consideration the main issues

Hitler's Preemptive War: The Battle for
Norway, 1940
"Lunde has thoroughly dissected both ground and
naval battles and managed to make a complex politico-military situation clear. .
. . military collections will want to acquire this excellent effort."-Library
Journal This book describes the often overlooked World War II campaign for
Norway-a complex series of battles in which Hitler out-gambled Churchill in
order to secure a vital resource lifeline for the Third Reich. After Hitler
conquered Poland and was still fine-tuning his plans against France, the British
began to exert control of the coastline of neutral Norway, an action that
threatened to cut off Germany's iron-ore conduit to Sweden and outflank from the
start its hegemony on the Continent. The Germans responded with a dizzying
series of assaults, using every tool of modern warfare developed in the previous
generation. Airlifted infantry, mountain troops and paratroopers were dispatched
to the north, seizing Norwegian strongpoints while forestalling larger but more
cumbersome Allied units. The German navy also set sail, taking a brutal
beating at the hands of Britannia, while ensuring with its sacrifice that key
harbors could be held open for resupply. As dive-bombers soared overhead, small
but elite German units traversed forbidding terrain to ambush Allied units
trying to forge inland. At Narvik, some 6,000 German troops battled 20,000
French and British, until the Allies were finally forced to withdraw by the
great disaster in France, which had then gotten underway. Henrik Lunde, a
native Norwegian and former U.S. Special Operations colonel, has written the
most objective account to date of a campaign in which 20th-century military
innovation found its first fertile playing field.

Sewing for Plus Sizes: Creating Clothes
that Fit and Flatter
Writes Deckert, "The goal of all plus-size design
is to emphasize your positive attributes and modify or distract from those you
feel are less desirable." Deckert is herself a plus-sized woman and a custom
clothier with more than 30 years of sewing experience. Given that most clothing
manufacturers have never learned to design attractive, well-fitting clothes for
women who wear a size 14 or larger, the woman who wants to achieve style beyond
size must sew her own clothes. This book will make that task less formidable.
Illustrated with photos of plus-sized models, including the author herself, this
book emphasizes analyzing pattern designs based on individual figure proportions
and working effectively with fabric color and texture. Major sections of the
book are devoted to tools for plus-sized sewing (including instructions for
making an inexpensive personal paper-tape dress form), choosing fabric, taking
measurements, "sizing-up" commercial patterns for the plus-sized figure, and
modifying patterns to make clothing more comfortable and durable.
Enthusiastically recommended for all public libraries with sewing and costuming
collections.

beader's skills and confidence. The 63 projects included—ranging from bracelets,
necklaces, rings, and earrings to findings, closures, beaded beads, and other
beaded objects—teach a single project or technique arranged to build skill.
Appealing to beaders of every level, this classroom-in-a-book will supplement

techniques, and infuse work with inspiration.

To the uninitiated, a lace pillow set up with
dozens of bobbins looks very complicated, but this manual shows the simplicity
of the basic moves: only four bobbins are in use at any one time, and there are
only two moves—twist and cross. Focusing on Torchon lacemaking techniques—Bruges
and Chantilly lace are two other well-known traditions—these lessons begin with
small lace bookmarks worked in various designs before progressing to full-scale
projects: a purse, a bag, a cushion, and two scarves. All are presented with
step-by-step instructions, close-up photos, and a complete set of pricking
patterns. Additional material covers techniques for adding beads and tassels and
working with such unconventional materials as wire, cable, and thick wool
yarn.

American Shaolin: Flying Kicks, Buddhist
Monks, and the Legend of Iron Crotch: An Odyssey in theNew
China
In this smoothly written memoir, 98-pound weakling
Polly makes the age-old decision to turn his nerdy self into a fighting machine.
Polly's quest for manhood leads this guy from Topeka, Kans., to the Shaolin
Temple, ancient home of the fighting monks and setting for 10,000 chop-socky
movies. As much a student of Chinese culture as he is a martial artist, Polly
derives a great deal of humor from the misunderstandings that follow a
six-foot-three laowai (white foreigner) in a China taking its first awkward
steps into capitalism after Tiananmen Square. Polly has a good eye for
characters and introduces the reader to a Finnish messiah, a practitioner of
"iron crotch" kung fu, and his nagging girlfriend. We get the inside dope on
Chinese dating, Chinese drinking games and a medical system apparently modeled
on the Spanish Inquisition. The last hundred pages of the book lose focus, and
Polly doesn't convincingly demonstrate how he transforms himself from a
stumbling geek to a kickboxing stud who can stand toe-to-toe with the
highest-ranked fighter in the world. Although Polly may fall short in sharing
Shaolin's secrets, as a chronicler of human absurdity he makes all the right
moves.
Secret Lives of Great Artists: What Your
Teachers Never Told You About Master Painters and
Sculptors
In the tradition of our best-selling Secret Lives
of the U.S. Presidents (120 000 copies in print) here are outrageous and
uncensored profiles of the world's greatest artists complete with hundreds of
little-known politically incorrect and downright bizarre facts.

i Michelangelo had such repellant body odor that
his assistants couldn't stand working for him. i Pablo Picasso did jail time
for ripping off several statues from the Louvre. i Gabriel Dante Rossetti's
favorite pet was a wombat that slept on his dining room table. i Vincent van
Gogh sometimes ate paint directly from the tube. i Georgia O'Keeffe liked to
paint in the nude. i Salvador DalI concocted a perfume from dung to attract
the attention of his future wife.
With outrageous anecdotes about everyone from
Leonardo (accused sodomist) to Caravaggio (convicted murderer) to Edward Hopper
(alleged wife beater) Secret Lives of Great Artists is an art history lesson
you'll never forget!
The 101 Most Influential People Who Never
Lived: How Characters of Fiction, Myth, Legends, Television, and Movies Have
Shaped Our Society, Changed Our Behavior, and Set the Course of
History
From Santa Claus to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, from
Uncle Sam to Uncle Tom, here is a compelling, eye-opening, and endlessly
entertaining compendium of fictional trendsetters and world-shakers who have
helped shape our culture and our lives. The 101 Most Influential People Who
Never Lived offers fascinating histories of our most beloved, hated, feared, and
revered invented icons and the indelible marks they made on civilization,
including:
# 28: Rosie the Riveter, the buff,
blue-collar factory worker who helped jump-start the Women's Liberation
movement
# 7: Siegfried, the legendary warrior-hero of
Teutonic nationalism responsible for propelling Germany into two world
wars
# 80: Icarus, the headstrong high-flyer who
inspired the Wright brothers and humankind's dreams of defying gravity . . .
while demonstrating the pressing need for flight insurance
# 58: Saint Valentine, the hapless,
de-canonized loser who lost his heart and head at about the same time
# 43: Barbie, the bodacious plastic babe who
became a role model for millions of little girls, setting an impossible standard
for beauty and style
Ninja . . . that single word conjures up images of
mystery and power. The ability to move swiftly and silently, to mesmerize one's
victim, to strike infallibly, and then to disappear into the night--this is the
legend of the ninja. These nearly sorcerous aspects of the ninja, as well as the
exotic weapons they use, are the focus of The Mystic Arts of the Ninja. Its
author, Shidoshi Stephen K. Hayes, is the sole American to be granted teaching
credentials by the 34th grandmaster of the Togokure School of Ninjutsu in Japan.
Going beyond the basic conditioning and training techniques of his best-selling
Ninjutsu: The Art of the Invisible Warrior, Hayes explains the most sought after
secrets of his ninja training: * Hypnotism: Saiminjutsu, the
ninja's hypnotic powers are described and explained. Sample exercises are
provided to help develop your hypnotic powers. * Invisibility: Stealth
walking and camouflage are discussed. Hayes provides examples of how to move
silently across various kinds of terrain and how to blend into your surroundings
to become invisible. * Weaponry: The Hanbo cane, the sword, and the
infamous shuriken throwing stars are ninja trademarks. Hayes fully describes
their use in grappling as well as in attacking. More than 400
black-and-white photos are used to illustrate the secrets and techniques that
have been used by the ninja to surprise and outwit their foes over the past 800
years. The authenticity of Shidoshi Hayes's instruction is perhaps the most
important aspect of this book: no other book represents the true ninja
tradition.

Baby, Let's Play House: Elvis Presley and
the Women Who Loved Him
Nearly thirty-three years after his death, Elvis
Presley's extraordinary physical appeal, timeless music, and sexual charisma
continue to captivate, titillate, and excite. Though hundreds of books have been
written about the King, no book has solely explored his relationships with women
and how they influenced his music and life—until now.
Based largely on exclusive interviews with the many
women who knew him in various roles—lover, sweetheart, friend, costar, and
family member—Baby, Let's Play House explores Presley's love affairs with, among
others, Ann-Margret, Linda Thompson, Sheila Ryan Caan, June Juanico, Joyce Bova,
Barbara Leigh, Cybill Shepherd, and Priscilla Beaulieu, as well as his
friendships with actresses Raquel Welch, Barbara Eden, Mary Ann Mobley, Yvonne
Craig, and Celeste Yarnall.
The book also spotlights important early
girlfriends and the women who dared to turn him down, including Cher, Petula
Clark, and Karen Carpenter, as well as two women—Kay Wheeler and Tura Satana—who
taught him dance moves he used onstage.
Baby, Let's Play House, named after the 1955 song
that was his first to hit the national charts and his mother's favorite Elvis
recording, presents Elvis in a new light—as a charming but wounded Lothario who
bedded scores of women but seemed unable to maintain a lasting romantic
relationship. While fully exploring the most famous romantic idol of the
twentieth century, award-winning veteran music journalist Alanna Nash pulls back
the covers on what Elvis really wanted in a woman—and was tragically never able
to find.
This engaging guide takes children on an
international tour of the world's greatest art, from the first daubs of paint in
prehistoric caves to today's performance art. It includes all of the important
art movements, from Renaissance to Rococo, as well as the great painters from
all these eras. However, the approach is to look at art as an international
exchange of ideas, not a straight history of western art. The book includes art
from all countries, from aboriginal art to totem poles.
In his latest book, Dr. David Frawley unlocks
ancient astrological understandings of the human body's inherent weaknesses
based on positions of the planets and stars at birth. In so doing, he guides us
to avert sickness by applying detailed traditional Vedic remedial measures and
then helps us understand the karma behind illnesses when they do
manifest.

Run Like You Stole Something: The Science
behind the Score Line
There's more to sporting success than raw talent
and the luck of the draw. Explaining the hows and whys of what a spectator sees
and a competitor experiences, Justin Kemp and Damian Farrow explain the science
behind sports performance. Alongside hardcore data, there are classic anecdotes,
fascinating historical facts and bizarre bits of nerdy trivia. Whether your view
is from the couch, the stand, or up-close-and-personal on the field, you should
be enlightened and entertained by what really goes on in the wide world of
sport. And in case you're wondering, the not-so-scientific "run like you stole
something" is the authors' favourite footy yell.

Few women do it and even fewer will admit to it.
But in Toni Bentley's daring and intimate memoir, The Surrender, she pulls the
sheets back on an erotic experience that's been forbidden since the Bible and
celebrates "the joy that lies on the other side of convention, where risk is
real and rapture resides." From Story of O to The Kiss to The Sexual Life of
Catherine M., readers have been enthralled with sexually subversive memoirs by
women. But even those erotic classics didn't navigate the psychosexual terrain
that Bentley does when she meets a lover who introduces her to a radical and
unexpected pleasure, to the "holy" act that she came to see as her awakening.
The Surrender is a witty, intelligent, and eloquent
exploration of one woman's obsession that will be sure to leave readers
questioning their own desires.

The history of China is a history of warfare.
Rarely in its 3,000-year existence has the country not been beset by war,
rebellion, or raids. Warfare was a primary source of innovation, social
evolution, and material progress in the Legendary Era, Hsia dynasty, and Shang
dynasty--indeed, war was the force that formed the first cohesive Chinese
empire, setting China on a trajectory of state building and aggressive activity
that continues to this day.
In Ancient Chinese Warfare, a preeminent expert on
Chinese military history uses recently recovered documents and archaeological
findings to construct a comprehensive guide to the developing technologies,
strategies, and logistics of ancient Chinese militarism. The result is a
definitive look at the tools and methods that won wars and shaped culture in
ancient China.

The Last Speakers: The Quest to Save the
World's Most Endangered Languages
Part travelogue and part scientist's notebook, The
Last Speakers is the poignant chronicle of author K. David Harrison's
expeditions around the world to meet with last speakers of vanishing languages.
The speakers' eloquent reflections and candid photographs reveal little-known
lifeways as well as revitalization efforts to teach disappearing languages to
younger generations. Thought-provoking and engaging, this unique book
illuminates the global language-extinction crisis through photos, graphics,
interviews, traditional wisdom never before translated into English, and
first-person essays that thrillingly convey the adventure of science and
exploration.
When China Rules the World: The End of the
Western World and the Birth of a New Global Order
How China's ascendance as an economic superpower
will alter the cultural, political, social, and ethnic balance of global power
in the twenty-first century, unseating the West and in the process creating a
whole new world
According to even the most conservative estimates,
China will overtake the United States as the world's largest economy by 2027 and
will ascend to the position of world economic leader by 2050. But the full
repercussions of China's ascendancy-for itself and the rest of the globe-have
been surprisingly little explained or understood. In this far-reaching and
original investigation, Martin Jacques offers provocative answers to some of the
most pressing questions about China's growing place on the world
stage.
Martin Jacques reveals, by elaborating on three
historical truths, how China will seek to shape the world in its own image. The
Chinese have a rich and long history as a civilization-state. Under the
tributary system, outlying states paid tribute to the Middle Kingdom.
Ninety-four percent of the population still believes they are one race-"Han
Chinese." The strong sense of superiority rooted in China's history promises to
resurface in twenty-first century China and in the process strengthen and
further unify the country.
A culturally self-confident Asian giant with a
billion-plus population, China will likely resist globalization as we know it.
This exceptionalism will have powerful ramifications for the rest of the world
and the United States in particular. As China is already emerging as the new
center of the East Asian economy, the mantle of economic and, therefore,
cultural relevance will in our lifetimes begin to pass from Manhattan and Paris
to cities like Beijing and Shanghai. It is the American relationship with and
attitude toward China, Jacques argues, that will determine whether the
twenty-first century will be relatively peaceful or fraught with tension,
instability, and danger.
When China Rules the World is the first book to
fully conceive of and explain the upheaval that China's ascendance will cause
and the realigned global power structure it will create.

Brutal: The Untold Story of My Life Inside
Whitey Bulger's Irish Mob
I grew up in the Old Colony housing project in
South Boston and became partners with James "Whitey" Bulger, who I always called
Jimmy.
Jimmy and I, we were unstoppable. We took what we
wanted. And we made people disappear—permanently. We made millions. And if
someone ratted us out, we killed him. We were not nice guys.
I found out that Jimmy had been an FBI informant in
1999, and my life was never the same. When the feds finally got me, I was faced
with something Jimmy would have killed me for—cooperating with the authorities.
I pled guilty to twenty-nine counts, including five murders. I went away for
five and a half years.
I was brutally honest on the witness stand, and
this book is brutally honest, too; the brutal truth that was never before told.
How could it? Only three people could tell the true story. With one on the run
and one in jail for life, it falls on me.

The Bookseller of Kabul captures everyday life in a
country ravaged by twenty years of war and characterized by deep cultural
conservatism. In an ironic postscript to the book's wild success, Sultan has
sued Seierstad and her publisher for libel in a Norwegian court. He insists that
his hospitality was abused, his personal life was slandered, and that his family
has been endangered, so he has, in good western fashion, demanded what his
lawyer has called "redress and compensation."
The Audacity to Win: The Inside Story and
Lessons of Barack Obama's Historic Victory
The architect of the Obama campaign reveals how it
all happened- and how it will revolutionize our politics
David Plouffe not only led the effort that put
Barack Obama in the White House, but he also changed the face of politics
forever and reenergized the idea of democracy itself. The Audacity to Win is his
story of that groundbreaking achievement, taking readers inside the remarkable
campaign that led to the election of the first African American
president.
For two years Plouffe worked side by side with
Obama, charting the course of the campaign. His is the ultimate insider's tale,
revealing both the strategies that delivered Obama to office and how the
candidate and campaign handled moments of great challenge and opportunity.
Moving from the deliberations about whether to run at all, through the epic
primary battle with Hillary Clinton and the general election against John
McCain, Plouffe showcases the high-wire gamesmanship that fascinated pundits and
the drama and intrigue that captivated a nation.
The Audacity to Win chronicles the arrival of a new
moment in American life at the convergence of digital technology and grassroots
organization, and the exciting possibilities revealed by a campaign that in many
ways functioned as a $1 billion start-up with laser-like focus and discipline.
In this extraordinary book, David Plouffe unfolds one of the most important
political stories of our time, one whose lessons are not limited to politics,
but reach to the greatest heights of what we dream about for our country and
ourselves.
In this nuanced and complex portrait of Barack
Obama, Pulitzer Prize-winner David Remnick offers a thorough, intricate, and
riveting account of the unique experiences that shaped our nation’s first
African American president.
Through extensive on-the-record
interviews with friends and teachers, mentors and disparagers, family members
and Obama himself, Remnick explores the elite institutions that first exposed
Obama to social tensions, and the intellectual currents that contributed to his
identity. Using America’s racial history as a backdrop for Obama’s own story,
Remnick further reveals how an initially rootless and confused young man built
on the experiences of an earlier generation of black leaders to become one of
the central figures of our time.
Masterfully written and eminently
readable, The Bridge is destined to be a lasting and illuminating work for years
to come, by a writer with an unparalleled gift for revealing the historical
significance of our present moment.
Fashioning the Feminine: Representation and
Women's Fashion from the Fin De Siecle to the Present
Representations of fashionable femininity have
multiplied through the 20th century. In fashion store advertising, magazines,
photography, and museum collections, complex versions of feminine identity have
been and are being formed. This book examines the relationship between women’s
fashion, female representation, and femininity in Britain from the end of the
19th to the end of the 20th century.
When "Adorned in Dreams" was first published in
1985, Angela Carter described the book as 'the best I have read on the subject,
bar none'. Elizabeth Wilson traces the social and cultural history of fashion
and its complex relationship to modernity. Wilson delights in the power of
fashion to mark out identity or to subvert it and this brand new edition of her
book follows recent developments to bring the story of fashionable dress up to
date, exploring the grunge look inspired by bands like Nirvana, the 'boho chic'
of the mid 90's, retro-dressing and the meanings of dress from the veil to
Beck's pink-varnished toenails.

The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left
Sabotage America
The real threat to the United States is not
terrorism. The real threat is Islamism, whose sophisticated forces have
collaborated with the American Left not only to undermine U.S. national security
but also to shred the fabric of American constitutional democracy?freedom and
individual liberty. InThe Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotage America,
bestselling author Andrew C. McCarthy offers a harrowing account of how the
global Islamist movement’s jihad involves far more than terrorist attacks, and
how it has found the ideal partner in President Barack Obama, whose Islamist
sympathies run deep.
For years, McCarthy warned of America’s blindness
to the Islamist threat, but inThe Grand Jihad McCarthy exposes a new, more
insidious peril: the government’s active appeasement of the Islamist ideology.
With the help of witting and unwitting accomplices in and out of government,
Islamism doesn’t merely fuel terrorism but spawns America-hating Islamic
enclaves in our very midst, gradually foisting Islam’s repressive law, sharia,
on American life. The revolutionary doctrine has made common cause with an
ascendant Left that also seeks radical transformation of our constitutional
order. The prognosis for liberty could not be more dire.
Dowden's critical study of 1875 approaches
Shakespeare from the human side, showing how Shakespeare the man is visible
through his art. Moving from Shakespeare's early plays to his late period, and
grouping the plays according to key stages in his career, the book traces the
growth of Shakespeare's intellect and character from youth to full maturity.
Dowden does not seek to align Shakespeare with any particular single character
from his plays, but sees aspects of Shakespeare in many of his dramatic
creations, demonstrating how Shakespeare represents many different sides of
human life. The reader is provided with an insight into the questions at the
forefront of Shakespeare's mind, his most intense moments of inspiration and his
discoveries about human life. Outlining the differences between the youthful
Shakespeare and Shakespeare as a mature and experienced man, the book enables us
to better understand Shakespeare's character and genius.
Kingpin: How One Hacker Took Over the
Billion-Dollar Cybercrime Underground
Former hacker Kevin Poulsen has, over the past
decade, built a reputation as one of the top investigative reporters on the
cybercrime beat. In Kingpin, he pours his unmatched access and expertise into
book form for the first time, delivering a gripping cat-and-mouse narrative—and
an unprecedented view into the twenty-first century’s signature form of
organized crime.
The word spread through the hacking underground
like some unstoppable new virus: Someone—some brilliant, audacious crook—had
just staged a hostile takeover of an online criminal network that siphoned
billions of dollars from the US economy.
The FBI rushed to launch
an ambitious undercover operation aimed at tracking down this new kingpin; other
agencies around the world deployed dozens of moles and double agents. Together,
the cybercops lured numerous unsuspecting hackers into their clutches. . . . Yet
at every turn, their main quarry displayed an uncanny ability to sniff out their
snitches and see through their plots.
The culprit they sought was
the most unlikely of criminals: a brilliant programmer with a hippie ethic and a
supervillain’s double identity. As prominent “white-hat” hacker Max “Vision”
Butler, he was a celebrity throughout the programming world, even serving as a
consultant to the FBI. But as the black-hat “Iceman,” he found in the world of
data theft an irresistible opportunity to test his outsized abilities. He
infiltrated thousands of computers around the country, sucking down millions of
credit card numbers at will. He effortlessly hacked his fellow hackers, stealing
their ill-gotten gains from under their noses. Together with a smooth-talking
con artist, he ran a massive real-world crime ring.
And for years,
he did it all with seeming impunity, even as countless rivals ran afoul of
police.
Yet as he watched the fraudsters around him squabble,
their ranks riddled with infiltrators, their methods inefficient, he began to
see in their dysfunction the ultimate challenge: He would stage his coup and fix
what was broken, run things as they should be run—even if it meant painting a
bull’s-eye on his forehead.
Through the story of this criminal’s
remarkable rise, and of law enforcement’s quest to track him down, Kingpin lays
bare the workings of a silent crime wave still affecting millions of Americans.
In these pages, we are ushered into vast online-fraud supermarkets stocked with
credit card numbers, counterfeit checks, hacked bank accounts, dead drops, and
fake passports. We learn the workings of the numerous hacks—browser exploits,
phishing attacks, Trojan horses, and much more—these fraudsters use to ply their
trade, and trace the complex routes by which they turn stolen data into millions
of dollars. And thanks to Poulsen’s remarkable access to both cops and
criminals, we step inside the quiet, desperate arms race that law enforcement
continues to fight with these scammers today.
Ultimately,
Kingpin is a journey into an underworld of startling scope and power, one in
which ordinary American teenagers work hand in hand with murderous Russian
mobsters and where a simple Wi-Fi connection can unleash a torrent of gold worth
millions.

Violent London: 2000 Years of Riots, Rebels
and Revolts
Almost as soon as it was built, London suffered the
first of many acts of violent protest, when Boudica and her followers set fire
to the city in AD 60. Ever since, the capitals streets have been a forum for
popular insurrection. Covering nearly 2,000 years of political protest, this is
a riveting alternative history of past and present conflict. Reviews of 1st
edition (Pan): An exhilarating rush through countless riots, insurrections and
full-blown street wars...written in a racy and accessible style...As I read this
superb history, I looked out at my quiet suburban garden, disappointed not to
hear the sound of trumpets. - J. G Ballard, Daily Telegraph A breathless but
exhilarating journey from Boudica to such recent events as the aftermath of
September 11th and the march of the Countryside Alliance, Blooms viewpoint is
nicley balanced, critical of government and especially of the police, but not
unreasonably so, and not too passionately keen that the rebels should win every
time. - Times Literary Supplement Seamless, full of information, connections and
insights.
The earth is continuously changing and evolving yet
it is unclear how environmental changes will affect us in years to come. What
changes are inevitable? What changes, if any, are beneficial? And what can we do
as citizens of this planet to protect it and our future generations? Larry
Slobodkin, one of the leading pioneers of modern ecology, offers compelling
answers to these questions in A Citizens Guide to Ecology. He provides many
insights into ecology and the processes that keep the world functioning. This
important guide introduces observations that underlie arguments about all
aspects of the natural environment--including both global and local issues. To
clarify difficult concepts, Slobodkin uses lake, ocean, and terrestrial
ecosystems to explain ecological energy flows and relationships on a global
scale. The book presents a clear and current understanding of the ecological
world, and how individual citizens can participate in practical decisions on
ecological issues. It tackles such issues as global warming, ecology and health,
organic farming, species extinction and adaptation, and endangered species. An
excellent introduction and overview, A Citizens Guide to Ecology helps us to
understand what steps we as humans can take to keep our planet habitable for
generations to come.
"This beautifully written book brings together
careful observation, personal reflection, and theoretical understanding to
explain the major environmental problems that confront us. Dr. Slobodkins superb
and sweeping work invites us to contemplate a great many facts and a few large
values to motivate a clear and compelling response to losses of biodiversity,
the problem of invasive species, global warming, and other environmental
concerns."--Mark Sagoff, School of Public Affairs, University of
Maryla

This two-volume study text contains edited Hebrew
and Aramaic transcriptions, and English translations of the non-biblical scrolls
on facing pages, arranged by serial number from Cave 1 to Cave 11. In addition,
it offers a summary of the contents of the biblical scrolls from Qumran. Each
Q-number is provided with a heading which contains the information on the text
and selected bibliographic references. Although unidentified and unclassified
fragments have been omitted, and no snippets of manuscripts have been
reproduced, this edition aims to be complete for the non-biblical scrolls. This
publication is designed as a practical reference tool to facilitate access to
the Qumran collection of the Dead Sea Scrolls. As such it is primarily intended
for classroom use and for use by specialists from other disciplines who need a
reliable compendium to all the materials found. It should also be useful as a
companion for those studying the original manuscripts using the microfiche or
CD-ROM editions of the scrolls.
Choosing the Right Thing to Do, In Life, at
Work, in Relationships, and for the Planet
This enlightening book helps readers internalize
the process by which they make decisions in order to, ultimately, set a moral
example. Choosing the Right Thing to Do is different because it stresses
practice over theory and doesn't lecture on morality; rather, it provides tools
for learning how to do the right thing - a matter that is different for
everyone. The author introduces a moral "spectrum" through which readers can
view the decisions they face every day. This spectrum is comprised of seven
"moral prisms," including:
*the Virtue Ethics prism, which asks: What would
the most virtuous person I know do in this situation? *the
Deontological prism, which asks: What would I do if everyone in the world were
to do as I did? *the Egoist prism, which asks: What course of action
will most effectively ensure that my short- and long-term goals are
reached?
In Choosing the Right Thing to Do, the principles
behind these questions are the key to the ability to make the right
choices.
Reinventing Yourself: How to Become the
Person You'Ve Always Wanted to Be
Drawing on many years of work in the field since
the original publication of the book, Chandler has added numerous new stories,
quotes, insights and recommendations on how to transform yourself from a
fictional, limited, old personality to a fresh level of creative action. "It is
a dream come true," says Chandler, "to have been given the chance by Career
Press to reinvent Reinventing Yourself. I'll let the reader be the judge as to
whether I succeeded at my mission of taking this book from good to great."
"Reinventing Yourself is written forcefully, but with great humor, There won't
be many books in the coming years that are met with as much enthusiasm as this
book." -Colin Wilson, author of The Outsider and Alien Dawn "If you want a book
that develops your hidden potential, look no further. Steve Chandler's
Reinventing Yourself is it!" -Danny Cox, author of Seize the Day and There are
No Limits :"If you put together the best of Anthony Robbins, Mark McCormack and
Wayne Dyer, what you would have would be almost as good as Steve Chandler."

The Oxford History of the Classical World:
Greece and the Hellenistic World
From the epic poems of Homer to the glittering art
and architecture of Greece's Golden Age to the influential Roman systems of law
and leadership, the classical world has established the foundations of our
culture, as well as many of its enduring achievements. Astonishingly in-depth in
its coverage of the entire 1000-year history of the classical world and richly
illustrated, The Oxford History of the Classical World offers the general reader
the definitive companion to the Graeco-Roman world, its history, and its
achievements.
The first volume, Classical Greece and the
Hellenistic World, covers the period from the eighth to first centuries B.C., a
period unparalleled in history for its brilliance in literature, philosophy, and
the visual arts. It also treats the Hellenization of the Middle East by the
monarchies established in the area conquered by Alexander the Great.
The second volume, Classical Rome, covers early
Rome and Italy, the expansion of the Roman republic, the foundation of the Roman
Empire by Augustus, its consolidation in the first two centuries A.D., and the
later Empire and its influence on Western civilization.
The editors--three eminent classicists, John
Boardman, Jasper Griffin, and Oswyn Murray--intersperse chapters on political
and social history with chapters on literature, philosophy, and the arts, and
reinforce the historical framework with maps and chronological charts. The two
volumes also contain bibliographies and a full index, as well as color plates,
black and white illustrations, and maps integrated into the text.
The contributors--thirty of the world's leading
scholars--present the latest in modern scholarship through masterpieces of wit,
brevity, and style. While concentrating on the aspects essential to
understanding each period, they also focus on those elements of the classical
world that remain of lasting importance and interest to readers today. Together,
these volumes provide both a provocative and entertaining window into our
past.
PreSchool-A charming picture book filled with a
small child's joyous love for all the animals on her farm. Large, bold
illustrations and a clear text fairly explode with exuberance. Descriptions of
ducks "...waddling to the water," hens "...hopping up and down," a goat
"...racing across the field," a cow "...swishing her tail," a pony "...rolling
over and over," and a turkey "...strutting around the yard" convey a sense of
bustling activity. The double-page acrylic-and-gouache paintings combined with
the simple text make this a perfect choice for sharing with toddler
groups.

Aiming “to offer a comprehensive view of how an
author’s work fits within the context of the author’s life, historical events,
and the literary world,” this title includes some 500 writers. Authors
traditionally studied in literature classes as well as those whose works
currently top the best-seller lists are among the wordsmiths found in the set.
Entries are organized into three main sections: “Works in Biographical and
Historical Context,” “Works in Literary Context,” and “Works in Critical
Context.” Additional features are a “Key Facts” segment that lists birth and
death dates and major works; “Responses to Literature,” with suggestions for
discussion and writing assignments; and “Further Reading,” providing a brief
bibliography. There are also sidebars entitled “Literary and Historical
Contemporaries” and “Common Human Experience,” the latter listing works similar
in technique or theme to those of the entrant’s. Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of
World Literature covers a multitude of writers from Kobo Abe to Mikhail
Zoschenko. It is worth noting that a number of authors of books for young
people, such as Kenneth Grahame and J. K. Rowling, are included. Glossaries of
literary terms, general indexes, and indexes by nationality or ethnicity
complete the set. With its breadth of coverage and wealth of information, the
encyclopedia will be a useful addition to academic and public library reference
collections. Gale Contextual Encyclopedia of American Literature (2009) applies
similar treatment to American authors.
How to Photograph the Moon and Planets with
Your Digital Camera (Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy
Series)
Although astronomical CCD cameras can be very
costly, digital cameras – the kind you use on holiday – on the other hand, are
relatively inexpensive. Moreover, their technology – especially thermal noise,
sensitivity (ISO number) and resolution – has progressed to a point where such
cameras are more than capable of photographing the brighter astronomical
objects.
Now Tony Buick has teamed up with fellow author and
astro imager Phil Pugh, to produce a completely revised, updated, and extended
second edition to How to Photograph the Moon and Planets with your Digital
Camera, first published in 2006. The revisions take into account changing (and
improving) camera technology, and some items which are now available
commercially but which previously had to be home-made. The section of solar
observing has been expanded to include observing by H-alpha light, and among the
many additional sections are photographing the constellations, aurorae, and
basic post-imaging processing.
Combining a unique overview of metropolitan visual
culture with detailed textual analysis, this interdisciplinary study explores
the relationship between the two cities Londoners inhabited: the physical spaces
of the metropolis, whose socially stratified and gendered topography was shaped
by consumer culture and unregulated capitalism; and an imaginary "London," an
"unreal city" which reflected and influenced their understanding of, and actions
in, the "real" environment.
The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and

which its survival depends. Tracking down historic revelations and improbable
hope from the Beltway to the farthest corners of the globe, Suskind delivers a
stirring and strikingly original portrait of the post-9/11 world.

Little Princes: One Man's Promise to Bring
Home the Lost Children of Nepal
So as not to seem completely self-indulgent to his
friends and family, Conor started his year-long trip around the world with a
three-month stint volunteering in the Little Princes Orphanage in war-torn
Nepal. What began as a cover story changed Conor's life, and the lives of
countless others, forever. The turning point occurred during Conor's second
stint as a volunteer with Little Princes. While playing on the roof of the
orphanage, Conor was approached by a woman who would turn out to be the mother
of two of the wards. Over hours of conversations with her, Conor learned the
truth. Many of the little princes were not orphans but children that had been
taken from their homes by child traffickers. In addition to losing two of her
boys, this woman, while under the control of a human trafficker, was doing her
best to keep seven other terrified kids alive. Conor's life changed in those
moments, as he decided to commit himself to these unfortunates. After securing
spots in an orphanage for all seven and arranging for an excellent local staff
to run the Little Princes Orphanage, Conor escaped Nepal, one day before
revolution erupted in Kathmandu. After arriving home, Conor received a
devastating email reporting that the seven kids had disappeared, snatched once
again by the same trafficker. Soon he was back in Kathmandu, riding through the
chaotic streets on the back of a local's motorcycle, searching for his kids,
seven needles in a corrupt haystack. And that is where Conor's story begins.
Conor pledged to not only start a new orphanage for these seven but also to
start an entire new programme dedicated to reuniting kids with their lost
families in remote villages in the Nepalese hills. He lived under constant fear
of retribution from the traffickers. He needed to return to the US by 22
December, both because that was the agreed-upon panic date on which friends
would alert authorities if he didn't return, and because it was the date that
the woman he'd fallen in love with over email would arrive at his door so they
could, at long last, meet in person. Conor's tale is an epic thriller, and a
love story, and is best told by Conor himself.
The Cult of Celebrity: What Our Fascination
with the Stars Reveals About Us
America’s fast-growing religion is—let’s face
it—celebrity worship. From gossip magazines to entertainment TV, from blogs to
ads featuring famous faces, the stars are our new gods and goddesses. But why
are we so quick to put them on pedestals? Why are we even more spellbound when
they topple back down to earth?
The Cult of Celebrity is the first book to explore
this phenomenon comprehensively and yet in eminently readable terms. In a
compulsive read, Cooper Lawrence maps out the psychology behind the behavior of
the stars—and that of the millions out there who follow their every move. She
points both to the benefits and dangers not only to society but also to us
personally; to our spending habits, health, social awareness, attitude toward
personal failure and toward relationships, and above all, our self-image. And
she offers practical tips on keeping our interest under control. Drawing on the
latest research as well as interviews with fans and entertainment industry
insiders, as well as celebrities themselves, The Cult of Celebrity is as
accessible and sassy as it is thought-provoking.

Tish and Pish: A delicious collection of
sumptious gorgiosities: How to be of a Speakingness Like Stephen
Fry
The English tongue has never tasted more delicious
than in the mouth of Stephen Fry: his chokingly brilliant sesquipedalian prose
is like a shaft of sunlight through the drizzle of quotidian language. Now, with
this bound monograph, we can all emit a similarly exquisite effulgence and enjoy
the bright shaft of Stephen Fry locution in the privacy of our own smallest
pavilion. May his shaft continue to pleasure us for many years to come. After
all, what could be fluffier?
Three years into Ontario's Common Sense Revolution,
hospitals and schools are closing by the hundreds; thousands of nurses and
teachers and other workers are jobless; schools are in chaos; pregnant welfare
mothers have lost their nutrition allowance because the Premier thinks they'll
spend it on beer; Toronto the megacity is collapsing under the weight of its own
amalgamated administration; the Premier's last cultural experience was Mr.
Silly; the rich are getting larger tax cuts while the province won't spring to
bury the homeless; welfare recipients deserve to be fingerprinted, but motorists
running red lights shouldn't have their pictures taken because it would violate
their privacy. What can you do but laugh? That's the approach taken by Linwood
Barclay, who's been skewering the current occupiers of Queen's Park in his
Toronto Star column since they took office. Mike Harris Made Me Eat My Dog comes
just in time; it's an informed and viciously satirical look at the Ontario
Tories, who've polarized public opinion unlike any other government in the
province's history. Chapters include a look at the so-called Whiz Kids advising
the Premier: ``There's Tiffany, age 6, whose political credo is `Mine! Mine!'''
Find out what happens at a meeting of the Tory cabinet's book club. Learn how
the homeless can help you get a big-screen tv, and discover 10 fun things to do,
in your final moments, while waiting in the emergency room.

Hamlet's BlackBerry: A Practical Philosophy
for Building a Good Life in the Digital Age
A crisp, passionately argued answer to the question
that everyone who's grown dependent on digital devices is asking: "Where's the
rest of my life?"
At a time when we're all trying to make sense of
our relentlessly connected lives, this revelatory book presents a bold new
approach to the digital age. Part intellectual journey, part memoir, Hamlet's
BlackBerry sets out to solve what William Powers calls the conundrum of
connectedness. Our computers and mobile devices do wonderful things for us. But
they also impose an enormous burden, making it harder for us to focus, do our
best work, build strong relationships, and find the depth and fulfillment we
crave.
Hamlet's BlackBerry argues that we need a new way
of thinking, an everyday philosophy for life with screens. To find it, Powers
reaches into the past, uncovering a rich trove of ideas that have helped people
manage and enjoy their connected lives for thousands of years. New technologies
have always brought the mix of excitement and stress that we feel today. Drawing
on some of history's most brilliant thinkers, from Plato to Shakespeare to
Thoreau, he shows that digital connectedness serves us best when it's balanced
by its opposite, disconnectedness.
Using his own life as laboratory and object lesson,
Powers demonstrates why this is the moment to revisit our relationship to
screens and mobile technologies, and how profound the rewards of doing so can
be. Lively, original, and entertaining, Hamlet's BlackBerry will challenge you
to rethink your digital life.
This book is beautifully, graciously and
thoughtfully written. Conceptually clear and brilliant, Monsieur Onfray
advocates philosophers, instead of priests, rabbis or mullahs, be our
representatives. Who are these, his philosophers? The laughers, the cynics, the
radicals, the atheists, the sensualists and voluptuaries, he writes, though he
rarely names names.
I did find three names in the course of the book:
Nietszche, Gilles Deleuze, and Jeremny Bentham (particularly Bentham's work,
"Deontology").
Monsieur Onfray's analysis of Christian, Judaic,
and Islamic faiths, all three united under the point of view of "hatred of life"
(in conjunction with suppression of sex and advocacy of violence), is quite
readable, fair, and clear. (Onfray does not himself in his book use the term
"hatred of life" per se as a philosophical concept(a term I borrow from
Schopenhauer), but his philosophic meaning nonetheless is abundantly and
perfectly clear.)
He declares unmistakeably that Hilter was a Roman
Catholic and the Catholic Church, without question, supported Nazism. Monsieur
Onfray's analysis is such that Catholicism appears to be the worst evil suffered
in the West thus far. However, in the discussion of the Muslim faith, Monsieur
Onfray reveals how frighteningly violent it is, particularly should this faith
get a good foothold in the West. (Shades of Sam Harris's point of view about
Islam appear with "The End of Faith" as well with a good many other writers,
including Mark Steyn's "America Alone.")
Monsieur Michael Onfray, in the book's last pages,
speaks of the "final battle" (post-Christian experience), an event, he asserts
(sadly but pragmatically), which is "already lost." Monsieur Onfray wants us to
live in a de-Christianized society, but it is, for him, as if this idea is
really after all just a dream. (Social critic and author Curtis White has an
important insight that Monsieur Onfray (and Sam Harris as well as Mark Steyn)
might do well to consider: the Manichean conflict between atheism and religion
is less significant to the future of the West than are the evils that have been
created in the West by state/corporate capitalism, particularly in the United
States.)
This book is well worth the purchase price. I have
no regrets about the purchase or the read. Michael Onfray is French, and so the
reader does find him saying in the end, at least we can dream -- of a better,
clearer world, one without the bitterness of religious strife in it. The book is
a treasure. It's not the last word, but it's a sanely, beautifully worded
respite from the insane, international world scene.
These secrets from the kitchens of two creative
homemakers – personally tested and tasted – are gauranteed to please your
friends and family. Completely non-alcoholic and caffeine-free, these delicious
beverage recipes are healthful and just right for every occasion. Dozens of
tasty ideas for simple socials and sumptuous receptions are provided – fruit
punches, holiday beverages, party refreshments, vegetable drinks, and milk-base
beverages, to name just a few. You’ll love these delicious drinks!

The second largest nation on earth, Canada, with
its overarching geography of over one million bodies of water, endless prairies,
frozen reaches of the north, and awe-inspiring mountain ranges, holds many
stunning lands. Though often portrayed by the American media as a pale
reflection of the United States, Canada, as displayed here, has a truly complex
and intricate image. The political struggles of the past and present and the
clash over issues of ethnicity, race, religion, language, and culture are just
some of the details that mark this countrys unmatched uniqueness. From the
earliest contact between Amerindians and Europeans to the early 21st century,
this history draws the reader into the drama that is Canada.
Lavondyss is not as accessible as Mythago Wood; however, for me, it was
even more rewarding. It's best if you read it slow, savoring the detail, the
imagery and the incredible scope. I've read it several times. Each time, after
finishing, it tends to haunt me for days and days. I also find it to be
profoundly sad, but not in a bad way. I STRONGLY recommend Lavondyss.
This is the 'Heroes Journey' in true Joseph Campbell fashion. Filled with
political meanings and starkly human motivations, 'Acacia' could very well join
Frank Herbert's 'Dune' as one of the most influential novels in Fantasy/Science
Fiction. The book is fleshed out by Durham's mastery of the language and one
cannot help but compare this book favorably to George R.R. Martin's Fire and Ice
series. Like Martin, Durham is not afraid to create a fantasy world with real
grit and meaning. There are many lessons for our time in this book and it's easy
to tell that Durham's previous novels were historical in nature and it's
difficult not to draw parallels between the current state of affairs in the
world and this story.
This is a dynamite novel (in any genre) and if Durham is able to hold true
to his vision in the future 'Acacia' books this is well on it's way to becoming
classic literature.

endure and are still able to maintain, and finally the love everlasting that
they both wanted.
To those that don't know, this is a continuation of "The Glamorous Life"
with the featured character being Cleezy, Lynx's baby brother! The combination
of these two give it a bit more spice and flavor!
My personal opinion is that this is her very best piece of work! She took
you from foster homes, dealing drugs, murder, and finally to the Lord! Life in
its simplest form!
This was another hot one by Nikki Turner presents!!This anthology featured
some great stories with alot of valid points. I especially enjoyed reading the
one by Meisha C. Holmes (Game Face) which I have a feeling that the author is
not done with that story yet and may finish that one off in a full novel or
another anthology cause the ending was off the hook.Joy's short story(Beyatch)
was also great!!!But Tysha's story Bossy was a little slow and hard to get
into.Other than that everything else was great!! props to Wahida Clark and Free
for telling it how it really is!!!
I very much looked forward to reentering the world of Acacia and exploring
the Other Lands. Part 2 of this exciting series did not disappoint. I went into
this novel without any preconceived notions, knowing at any time that my
favorite characters could be killed off in an instant. I was very pleased with
the complexity of the characters as they dealt with the elements of basic human
nature, and the corruptible nature of power while balancing their loyalty to
family and lovers. Corrin's duplicity and internal struggles were explored in
detail in this novel and allowed me to feel more empathy for her circumstances.
Part of Corrin's appeal is understanding that her coldness stems from her past
betrayals. I did feel that the narrative waited too long after the introductory
chapter to reveal what happened to the Ravi. Overall, I really enjoyed this book
and look forward to the conclusion.
In the second Apotheosis science fiction tale (see Prophets), S. Andrew
Swann writes a super space opera with incredible technological battles and well
developed characters starting with Adam and those who oppose the AI. Adding to
the feel of a realistic future is the political in-fighting between adversaries
fearing the loss of power more than reaching consensus on what to do as doomsday
counts down. Loaded with action, fans will not want to put down this terrific
twenty-sixth century (Terran calendar that is) thriller.
Nikki Turner was one of the first authors i encountered when i first began
my desire to read, i have read every book by her and when i began reading Black
Widow i knew it was going to be yet another great one, that waw until the ending
had me wondering if some pages were missing from my book.

Overall I enjoyed this novel quite a bit. The middle section seemed to bog
down a little bit, but once everything worked itself out and the story was back
in Luskan it really picked up and flowed smoothly. The ending leaves me
clamoring for the next book to see how things play out. Fans of Salvatore and
the Forgotten Realms will certainly want to pick this book up and see the
changes that are happening. Some of those changes surprised me quite a bit, so I
can really only guess what will happen in the next book. Transitions is an apt
title to call this trilogy, I can not think of a more appropriate word. This is
a book that I whole-heartedly recommend to those who are this far along in the
series. Only time will tell what is in store for Drizzt and the Forgotten
Realms.
Izzy Zanella wasn’t looking for another reason to butt heads with his Navy
SEAL teammate, and nemesis, Danny Gillman. But then he met Danny’s beautiful
younger sister, Eden. When she needed it most, he offered her a place to stay, a

he offered her marriage. But Eden’s devastating miscarriage shattered their life
together—and made the intense bad blood between Izzy and Danny even worse.
Now Eden’s back, and she’s on a mission to rescue her teen brother, Ben,
from their abusive stepfather. Even if she and Izzy can prove that their broken
marriage is still in one piece, winning legal custody of Ben is a long shot. But
they’re not alone: Danny and his girlfriend, Jenn, offer to help, and he and
Izzy agree to bury the past and fight for Ben’s future.
As they plan their strategy, Izzy and Eden grapple with the raw passion
that still crackles between them—while Danny and Jenn confront new depths in
their own rocky relationship. But events take a terrifying turn after Ben

refuge with Eden and Izzy, her pursuers kidnap Ben—and a deadly standoff begins.
Now they must all pull together like never before and strike back, swift and

Newly divorced, Andrew Stratton lives in his head and not with his heart.
He teaches architectural theory but has never built a building. He writes about
“The Anatomy of Livable Places”– communities where form and material are in
harmony–but has no sense of where he belongs. He is capable of deep, tender
emotions but is unable to express them. When his wife leaves him for another man
and excoriates his cautious nature in the process, Andrew is like a house shaken
off a faulty foundation. Sifting through the rubble, he must figure out what
should be salvaged and what should be scrapped.
Escaping from the predictable routine of his university life in
Philadelphia, Andrew travels to England and channels his pain into a weeklong
course on building stone walls. In the village of Boscastle, he discovers a
magical landscape of dizzying cliffs, jagged coastline, lush valleys, and hills
lined with stone hedges that have stood the test of time. At the Stone Academy,
Andrew immerses himself in the grueling task of piecing together rock into
intricate walls. Under the tutelage of his weathered instructor, he learns there
is more to laying stone than hard labor. And he soon falls under the spell of
Boscastle’s rhythms and quirks, which include a weekly sing-along, a museum
devoted to witchcraft, and a colorful group of residents ranging from a
precocious nine-year-old girl who communes with nature to an offbeat reverend
who has been known to give referrals to the town witch.
Moved by the warmth and connectedness of the village, Andrew begins to shed
his sheltered self. But his willingness to open his heart is tested when he
falls for Nicola Rhys-Jones, an American expatriate seeking to escape a history
of abuse. Thorny, sarcastic, and sexy, Nicola is an artist who paints
tranquility panels for hospitals. But her life before Boscastle has been
anything but peaceful. As their verbal sparring veers into darker territory,
Andrew grapples with his status in Boscastle. Is he just a tourist on holiday or
does he now have a stake in the village that has welcomed him?
I am a fan of Mary Higgins Clark's books and this one did not disappoint.
If you like mysteries and edge-of-your-seat "who dunnit" books then this is a
great one. Mary Higgins Clark writes in a way that makes the reader want to keep
reading to find out what happens. She has a knack of keeping her tales so
interesting and fresh. I loved this book, just like I loved all her other
books.
This book was a little better than the last one. I did like how Logan
Satterfield's character began to change. Mavea also has stopped being really
rebellious and shows signs of wanting to become a Christian. I liked how she got
Logan to go to church with her because in the past books she would never have
dreamed about going to church on her own and now she is getting guys to go with
her. The store in a truck idea was very interesting and appropriate for the time
period. I liked how the family worked together to conceive the idea and then
actually make it happen. It was good to read of how close the family were to
help out each other in times of need. Also very glad to read about Cass and
Nelson. While he wasn't the original guy I thought she would end up being with,
I think that the couple will do well together. I kinda of felt though that Brent
Hayden's character wasn't really necessary. While he did help out Lanie with her
writing, he just becomes another suitor in her already filled love live. Now she
has three men competing for her, as the town is quick to point out. She does
spend quite a bit of time alone with him which she doesn't seem to be too
concerned about. The bit about the end result of Lanie's father's cancer seemed
unreal to me. I know situations like that have happened but this just seemed to
be a huge coincidence. Also the situation with the doctor and the widow seemed
to be played unfairly and very wrong to brought up in a church setting.

Too many extra mysteries thrown in making it difficult to concentrate on
the main one. I found too many parts of the book annoying in content and so I
would skip quickly, which I don't like to do! Gertrude use to be funny, but now
she is more annoying and if Ms. Danheim had a heart, she would give her a nice
burial. Judith is a slave to solving a mystery but has to stop to get her
mother's lunch or dinner because the old women brow beats her until she does by
calling her insulting names. Not funny anymore. That scene has been played out
too many times and has lost its humor. Cousin Renie is the only one with a
backbone.....Judith could take a lesson. Joe, Judith's husband, is once again
off somewhere NOT being involved, but even when he is home he is no help.
Phyliss, the housekeeper and Sweetums, the cat, keep the whole thing going. If
you are new to Mary Daheim's B&B's......please do not read this one first.
You won't want to pick up another. If you are a fan you will want to read it
because we are hooked, bad or good.
So this book is highly recommended, both for Michael Connelly fans and as
an introduction to his work for new readers. Whether Harry Bosch and Mickey
Haller eventually meet or the two series remain on totally independent tracks,
It appears that the author has created interesting enough characters to form the
basis for many future bestsellers. For the past several years my favorite legal
procedurals are the series created by John Lescroart involving lawyer Dismas
Hardy and detective Abraham Glitsky. These novels successfully combine
background case development and courtroom drama with truly interesting
characters (Abe, Diz and their associates, friends and families) whose lives are
an integral element in the stories. This book is on a par with the best stories
in that series, and should be very enjoyable for fans of both Connelly and
Lescroart and in fact for all readers of legal thrillers.
Amitava Ghosh is an outstanding member of the new genre of writers of
Indian literature in English. His niche is combining history with fiction. In
his previous books he focused on India's longstanding ties with Arabia. In the
Glass Palace he moves to the East: Bangladesh, Myanmar, Malaysia &
Singapore. Through his story he highlights a number of important but neglected
historical issues: slavery in the East - poor Indians shipped to plantations in
the Far East; racism in the British Indian Army & the moral dilemma of
Indian soldiers confronted with the Indian National Army fighting for India's
freedom; treatment of the Burmese royalty when they came in the way of the
English colonial trade in teak; and finally the enterprise of the businessmen of
the Indian Diaspora. All through these events, he creates wonderful characters
that we can feel and touch. The story line starts at a gentle pace but in the
end is gripping, and the book is difficult to put down. It is also laced with
erotica ala Indian style for the first time in his books.
Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his officers have been called back to
the town of Three Pines. CC de Poitiers, an extremely unpleasant woman, has been
murdered in public at the height of a curling match. Figuring out how she was
killed is as much a mystery as uncovering who killed her.
Penny's books are deceptive. On one hand, they seem a simple traditional
mystery, set in a small town with lots of interesting, quirky characters, lots
of suspects from which to choose and good twists and turns along the way. Penny
does do dialogue well and her sense of place is evocative. But then there a
second layer, hard to describe, but one I find makes me occasionally stop and
think while reading and stays with me long after I've closed the book. Penny is
one of those I can be being on my very short list of authors to re-read. Highly
recommended.
The key to enjoying this strong eleventh century Japanese mystery is the
names that though add realism to the locale take a bit of adjusting by
westerners so as to not lose track of who does what to whom. The story line is
brimming with imagery that enables the audience to feel like a visitor to what
was once Kyoto. Akitada is a fascinating character disenchanted with his present
life with no hope for the future yet gives everything to solving his cases. I.J.
Parker writes an appealing tale that showcases her talent to paint quite a
picture for historical mystery fans to enjoy.

Ghosh depicts the lives of these characters and their acquaintances in
extravagant and thoroughly researched detail, bringing to life Deeti's misery,
the expectations for her within her husband's family, and the customs which she
must honor, for example. He fully describes buildings, their contents, bath
facilities, dining customs, religious practices, the inside of a slave ship, and
even the importance of omens, but he never forgets his obligation as a
story-teller, continuously presenting one highly dramatic moment after another.
Stories of piracy and cruelty, often growing out of the opium trade, exist side
by side with more personal stories of love and nobility. Ghosh's use of local
patois creates a rich and colorful atmosphere, and episodes of humor live side
by side with episodes of terror. The first book in a projected "Ibis trilogy,"
this historical novel pulses with life, and as the novel comes to a satisfying
close, Ghosh keeps several doors open, suggesting the direction he will take
with this novel's sequel.
Brilliant book. Ideally you need to have read the previous books in the
series for some of it to make sense chronologically but the plot can easily
stand alone as a superb example of historical mystery/murder/thriller writing.
There is enough of the supernatural in the story to satisfy without going over
the top and becoming a fantasy novel. There is also enough doubt on the part of
the hero as to whether he did or didn't see/hear anything to make the reader
wonder as well. And the book gives an interesting side light into Buddism, which
until this book I had always thought of as a peaceful, philosophical belief that
didn't go in for violence whereas the Buddism shown in this book is more akin to
the Taoism of the Judge Dee novels with it's firery furnaces and devils/demons.
Read it, it will give you a whole new insight into early Japan and their
religious practices/beliefs, painlessly including the knowledge as an integral
part of a plot line, and a plot intriguing enough that once I had started the
book I couldn't put it down until I had finished it. A rare occurance and one
that ensures that this series will feature prominently on my bookcase.
I try to avoid comparing books, but the satisfaction I got from "The
Egyptologist" reminded of the pleasure of reading A. S. Byatt's "Possession."
No, the books are not similar and no, this is not another "Possession", but
Phillips has the same respect for his readers' intelligence and he expects you
to be able to hang on for the hairpin turns. The result is a smart, teasing,
clever, and highly enjoyable novel.
A rich and textured novel set in 11th century Japan reveals layers of
society in a period not much known by Westerners. Sugawara Akitada, a minor
government official with a penchant for finding truth is sent to a far northern
province to analyze accounts and serve as goveror. He immediately finds himself
surrounded by intrigue and, with bodies piling up in his makeshift morgue, there
plenty of immediate problems to solve. Rebelling warlords, secretive outcasts,
and the sexual shenanagans of ordinary folk are almost too much for one man to
manage, but Akitada threads his way through the morass and unravels the tangled
mysteries. A fine read, and terrific listen!
This is the newest entry in the Hannah Swenson cozy mystery series set in
Lake Eden, Minnesota. As always, Hannah is juggling two men, Norman (a usually
dependable dentist) and Mike (bad boy cop). The mystery involves deception and
mistaken identity. Judging by the other customer reviews, readers were upset
about the twist at the end, but I think all will be explained in the next
volume. And kudos to Fluke for keeping things fresh, I say.

The mystery unfolds at a good pace. I was well into the book before I began
to catch on to the solution, and even after I had figured out the probable
culprit, I was still glued to the pages while Flavia went to work sorting out
the details.
If one were to nitpick, there were two small passages that were mildly
irksome. One involved a sibling squabble that ended with an accusation of being
adopted. It was an unnecessary part of the story, and using the concept of
adoption as a threat or a curse, even in an argument between children, is
tiresome. The second is a brief discussion involving a mock Chinese accent,
recounted with stereotypical "r - l" substitutions.
However, both of these issues were minor, and easily forgiven based on the
quality of writing and wonderfully developed characters. I enjoyed the book
tremendously and hope to read more adventures of Miss Flavia de Luce in the
future.
I read a review of the book in the NY Times and decided to watch the
original foreign film. I loved it. The story was well told, compelling, and
offered something new in the vampire genre. When the English version of the
movie came out last year, I watched it, too. It followed very closely the
original move with added special effects that didn't do much to improve the
film, but it was still very good. Let the Right One In, the book, did not
disappoint when I finally tracked down a copy to read. The story is fully
developed and it filled in many of the gaps that existed in the movies. I could
not put this book down. I was concerned about Oskar when he suffered abuse from
school bullies and I was rooting for Eli's survival even when I knew that
somehow I shouldn't be. The book does an excellent job of illustrating how
relationships of the heart can persuade us to engage in behavior that was
previously unthinkable. There is much to enjoy in this delightful book of love,
longing, and danger. I may even read it again, it was that good.
It is humanity's most ambitious endeavor-and its most controversial: the
Diaspora Project. A city-sized starship that will carry ten thousand men and
women, chosen among Earth's billions, to a new life beyond our solar system. For
those who are to go, the cost is their families, their loved ones, and the lives
they have known. For those who are left behind, there is disappointment,
despair, and anger. And for the Homeworld movement, led by the enigmatic
Jeremiah, the Project is an abomination that must be stopped at any cost. The
theft of Earth's best and brightest children? Or the ultimate destiny of the
human race?
Gene Wolfe takes us to a future North America at once familiar and utterly
strange. A young man and woman, Skip and Chelle, fall in love in college and
marry, but she is enlisted in the military, there is a war on, and she must
serve her tour of duty before they can settle down. But the military is fighting
a war with aliens in distant solar systems, and her months in the service will
be years in relative time on Earth. Chelle returns to recuperate from severe
injuries, after months of service, still a young woman but not necessarily the
same person—while Skip is in his forties and a wealthy businessman, but eager
for her return.
Still in love (somewhat to his surprise and delight), they go on a
Caribbean cruise to resume their marriage. Their vacation rapidly becomes a
complex series of challenges, not the least of which are spies, aliens, and
battles with pirates who capture the ship for ransom. There is no writer in SF
like Gene Wolfe and no SF novel like Home Fires.
Witch Lark McClure has survived a vicious vampire attack that shook her
confidence and left her struggling with feelings of helplessness and fear. The
last thing she needs is a partnership with Gawain, a handsome vampire knight who
means to seduce her every chance he gets.

Sylvie Lightner is no ordinary P.I. She specializes in cases involving the
unusual, in a world where magic is real-and where death isn't the worst thing
that can happen to you.
But when an employee is murdered in front of her, Sylvie has had enough.
After years of confounding the dark forces of the Magicus Mundi, she's closing
up shop-until a man claiming to be the God of Justice wants Sylvie to find his
lost lover.
In the blistering, dry summer, the waters of Thornfield Reservior have been
depleted, revealing the ruins of the small Yorkshire village that lay at its
bottom, bringing with it the unidentified bones of a brutally murdered young
woman. Detective Chief Inspector Banks faces a daunting challenge: he must
unmask a killer who has escaped detection for half a century. Because the dark
secret of Hobb's End continue to haunt the dedicated policeman even though the
town that bred then has died--and long after its former residents have been
scattered to far places...or themselves to the grave.
From an acknowledged master writing at the peak of his storytelling powers
comes a powerful, insightful, evocative, and searingly suspenseful novel of past
crimes and present evil.
When the brutally beaten body of a young man is found in an ally,
Eastvale's Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks and his colleague, Detective
Constable Susan Gay, have no choice but to lack up the three Pakistani youths
who seemingly started it all after an argument in a pub.But they're out in no
time and Banks is in big trouble with the Chief for risking a racial incident
with the arrest. Ordered to run the investigation from his desk and leave the
legwork to others, Banks' handes are tied and his temper is flaring.
But when disturbing facts start emerging about the victim, Banks can't
simply sit at his desk--and he soon alinates himself from both the investigation
and his own department. While his twenty-year marriage crumbles around him, he
tries to make sense of a gray world grown ever more black and sinister, as he
follows a treacherous trail of hate, greed, and twisted philosophy that leads to
the darkest pits of a man's inhumanity to man.Brilliant and exasperating by
turns, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Banks inhabits a Yorkshire landscape
colored in shades of gray where good and evil seldom conform to their
comfortingly ordinary colors of black and white.
A woman sits in a wheelchair perched on a cliff high above the sea, her
throat slit from ear to ear . . .
In a maze of narrow alleys behind a market square, a teenaged girl has been
murdered after a night of drunken revelries with her friends.
A pair of horrific crimes, the first—a seemingly senseless murder of a
helpless paraplegic—falls to Inspector Annie Cabbot, on loan to a local police
department. The terrible death of young Hayley Daniels becomes Chief Inspector
Alan Banks's investigation.
But shattering revelations threaten to awaken the slumbering demons of
earlier, darker times, and more blood is in the offing when the two cases
brutally and unexpectedly collide.
There's more than blood and bone beneath the skin ...
The victim, a nondescript "numbers cruncher," died horribly just yards away
from his terrified wife and daughter, murdered by men who clearly enjoyed their
work. The crime scene is one that could chill the blood of even the most
seasoned police officer. But the strange revelations about an ordinary
accountant's extraordinary secret life are what truly set Chief Inspector Alan
Banks off -- as lies breed further deceptions and blood begets blood, unleashing
a policeman's dark passions ... and a violent rage that, when freed, might be
impossible to control.

In a world of terror and uncertainty, what does one small death
matter?
The body hanging from a tree in a peaceful wood appears to Detective
Inspector Annie Cabbot to be a suicide. Further investigation into the sad
demise of Mark Hardcastle, the set designer for the local amateur theater
company, leads to the corpse of Mark's older, wealthier lover, brutally
bludgeoned to death.
Suddenly the case demands the attention of Chief Inspector Alan Banks,
called back from his vacation even though nothing suggests this wasn't a crime
of passion followed by remorse and self-destruction. But machinations within the
shadow world of secret government only add to the colors of darkness already
shading this troubling affair. And a stubborn policeman who will not be
frightened away could lose everything in one terrifying, explosive instant.
An ancient race of sentient predators lives amongst us. Their numbers are
few and they hide themselves well - like all predators, they are expert at the
art of concealing themselves from their prey. They can pass as human, and blend
seamlessly in to human society, whether it be in the guise of cunning corporate
lawyers like Eric Carver, or gangland psychopaths like alpha male Owen Tanzer.
They are not werewolves - but they are the reality that lies behind the legend
of werewolves. When bar-owner Jack Dwyer's best friend Artie is brutally
murdered, his restless spirit leads Jack to uncover the truth. Jack burns to
avenge Artie's death - but who will believe his story of who or what the
murderers really are? Jack is on his own - except for his girlfriend Molly, his
sister Courtney and their head barman, Bill, who hides a potentially shocking
secret under the skin. The four of them must destroy the pack that threatens to
take over Boston, before they themselves are hunted down as prey.
Jack Dwyer has a new enemy...a vicious, ravenous beast brings a new
dimension of terror to the third in Christopher Golden's spectacular dark
fantasy series. Ever since his best friend Artie was brutally murdered by the
savage predators known as Prowlers, Jack Dywer has been able to see and
communicate with ghosts. Now Artie, along with other spirits who inhabit the
limbo known as the Ghostlands, helps Jack in his quest to track down and
eliminate the Prowler threat. But Artie's latest information is startling: The
Ghostlands itself is under threat from a new and terrible entity known only as
the Ravenous. The Ravenous is stalking the inhabitants of the Ghostlands and
destroying them. Those who fall prey to it suffer the ultimate death. For them,
there is no longer the chance to move on or be at peace. There is only oblivion.
So many times the spirits have helped Jack hunt down or escape the Prowlers. Now
it is his turn to save them from the Ravenous -- if he can do so without
endangering himself. For Jasmine, the Prowlers' new leader, has ordered her pack
to wipe out Jack and his allies at any cost. Jack needs Artie to help him keep
the vengeful Prowlers at bay. But the Ravenous is on Jack's trail, and contact
with the Ghostlands will lead the supernatural killer straight to him. His links
with the dead are a double-edged sword -- and Jack is not sure whether he can
avoid being cut...
Fire. It violently destroys futures and pasts in a terrified heartbeat,
devouring damning secrets while leaving even greater mysteries in its foul wake
of ash and debris.
The night sky is ablaze as fire engulfs two barges moored end to end on a
Yorkshire canal. On board are the blackened remains of two human beings. One was
a reclusive and eccentric local artist, the other a junkie, a sad and damaged
young girl.
To the seasoned eye of Inspector Alan Banks, this horror was no accident,
its method so cruel and calculated that only the worst sort of fiend could have
committed the dark act. And it isn't long before the fears of Banks and D.I.
Annie Cabbot are brutally confirmed, when another suspicious blaze incinerates a
remote trailer in the countryside . . . and another solitary life is gruesomely
consumed.
But is it the work of a serial arsonist, or an ingeniously conceived plot
to obliterate the trail to other heinous crimes? There are shocking secrets to
be uncovered in the charred wreckage, grim evidence of lethal greed and twisted
hunger, and of nightmare occurrences within the private confines of family. A
terrible suspicion that a killer's work is not yet done drives Alan Banks as the
hunt intensifies for an elusive, cold-blooded chameleon who could be anyone and
anywhere.

The Prowlers saga continues...and deep in the rural backwoods lies the
nature of the beast within. The remnants of the Prowler pack once led by Owen
Tanzer has retreated into the hills and woods of rural Vermont, where a number
of unexplained deaths soon has Jack Dwyer on their trail. But the woods hide a
sacred meeting ground the Prowlers have guarded for centuries, and the quiet
town of Buckton is much more than it seems. The town hosts a Prowler community
which has existed for generations alongside their human neighbours, sublimating
their instinct for blood in order to live undetected and undisturbed. Their
patriarch has even written a secret history in which he reveals their true
nature and tries to explain the world from their point of view. Then their peace
is shattered forever by the renegades in the woods, and the Prowlers of Buckton
have to choose once and for all which side they are on. Meanwhile the crucial
question for Jack becomes which of the townsfolk are human -- and which are
not.
In this fifth installment of Griffin's Badge of Honor series, members of
Philadelphia's law enforcement community are again faced with the difficult task
of protecting their city. Teamed in an uneasy alliance with the Secret Service,
Philly's cops must thwart an assassination attempt on the vice president of the
United States during his upcoming visit. With only a typewritten note to go on,
rookie detective Matthew Payne and head of Special Operations Peter Wohl must
race to unearth the wannabe assassin--a petrochemicals market analyst who
believes God has commanded him to kill the veep. Although the book is nominally
about Payne and Wohl and about their chase, the most visible character here is
the police department, or rather the interplay between various factions therein.
As with his earlier police novels, Griffin ( Men in Blue ; The Witness ) seldom
treads where other authors dare not go. However, this book succeeds because of
the authority with which he depicts events and locations. Additionally, the
slick but restrained pace at which the story unfolds makes this an enjoyable and
gripping read.
Bestselling author W.E.B. Griffin, whose novels about various branches of
the military have won him battalions of fans, returns to the Brotherhood of War
series with this crackling yarn. A detachment of Special Forces hotshots teams
up with presidential counselor Sandy Felter to put a stop to Che Guevara's
attempts to "liberate" the Congo from President Joseph Mobutu's anticommunist
government.
Under Felter's direction, the Green Berets dispatch a special detachment to
the Congo. Their mission is to convince Mobutu of the wisdom of the American
plan to discredit and humiliate Che and his Cuban troops, rather than martyr
him, and thus bring an end to his plan to export Castro-style communism to
Africa and South America. Repelling the Simba insurgents with help from forces
led by South African mercenary Mike Hoare, Mobutu accepts the plan, along with
the Green Beret's covert assistance, war materiel, and a fighting force manned
by many of the characters who peopled The Aviators, Griffin's last Brotherhood
adventure. Yes, fans, the good guys are back--especially flying ace Jack Portet,
(a pilot drafted into the army right out of Leopoldville, where he was helping
his father run a regional airline), George Washington "Father" Lunsford, and
Master Sergeant "Doubting" Thomas. And a lot of them are black, a talented crew
of African American airmen and specialists pressed into the Special Forces not
just because they're brave and able but because they can pass as Congolese
soldiers and thereby keep the American presence under wraps.
As a matter of historical fact Guevara failed badly in the Congo, and after
retreating to Cuba, tried the same gambit in Bolivia, where he eventually died
under fire and gained the martyrdom the U.S. tried so hard to prevent. But
Special Ops offers a close-up look at a little-known piece of military history
in a gloriously testosterone-pumped epic, seasoned with a touch of sex and
romance. That may seem incongruous, given Griffin's clipped, terse writing
style, which is punctuated with plenty of military dispatches and a few
gratuitous growls at the internecine rivalry among American intelligence
agencies. It's even more incongruous when the general's daughter gets the flying
ace, and her father's highly placed friends not only get Portet an officer's
stripes but fly her to the Congo to stand by her man. But none of that will stop
Griffin's delighted readers from snapping up his latest chronicle of men at
war.
When a childhood friend of Abby's from Denver, Colorado, finds herself
short one bridesmaid, it doesn't take a professional psychic to see the
opportunity for a much-needed getaway. But one bridesmaid after the next is
mysteriously flying the coop, and Abby's intuition tells her their final
destination isn't pretty. With the wedding party falling apart and her gift of
sight never quite so foggy, Abby has to save the date-and herself from becoming
the next taffeta-clad target.
Our story unfolds at fictional Dupont University: those Olympian halls of
scholarship housing the cream of America's youth, the roseate Gothic spires and
manicured lawns suffused with tradition . . . Or so it appears to beautiful,
brilliant Charlotte Simmons, a sheltered freshman from North Carolina. But
Charlotte soon learns, to her mounting dismay, that for the upper-crust coeds of
Dupont, sex, cool, and kegs trump academic achievement every time.
As Charlotte encounters the paragons of Dupont's privileged elite--her
roommate, Beverly, a Groton-educated Brahmin in lusty pursuit of lacrosse
players; Jojo Johanssen, the only white starting player on Dupont's godlike
basketball team, whose position is threatened by a hotshot black freshman from
the projects; the Young Turk of Saint Ray fraternity, Hoyt Thorpe, whose heady
sense of entitlement and social domination is clinched by his accidental brawl
with a bodyguard for the governor of California; and Adam Geller, one of the
Millennial Mutants who run the university's "independent" newspaper and who
consider themselves the last bastion of intellectual endeavor on the sex-crazed,
jock-obsessed campus--she is seduced by the heady glamour of acceptance,
betraying both her values and upbringing before she grasps the power of being
different--and the exotic allure of her own innocence.

I thought this was a nice finish to the Singing River Series. I absolutely
love books set in this time period (Depression Era). Gilbert Morris has a way of
making his characters come to life and you feel as if you know them. Whenever I
finished each of these books, I felt sorry, for it was nice to escape to an era
gone by.
I have read a lot of Gilbert Morris' books and have enjoyed them all. I was
excited to get back to the Freeman family and see some good things happening for
them among the bad. I was glad to see that another book will follow this
one.
I have always liked Mary Higgins Clark. It had been a few years since I
last ready one of her books. However, I found "Daddy's Little Girl" at a yard
sale for 50 cents and decided to get it. It was the next book on my shelf a few
weeks ago and I decided to pick it up. I immediately knew I would like the book,
but didn't find the ending very hard to pick up on. Ellie was an interesting
character leading me to want to find out more ways she tries to make sure her
sister's killer of many years ago is not believed to be innocent. Overall, I
thought the book was a great read, but I almost wish the ending had been a
little more unexpected.
Louise Penny has written a dryly humorous, thoughtful, and engrossing study
of a network of close-knit friends and relatives who celebrate their successes
and mourn their losses together. Who among them is harboring evil intentions?
This book is reminiscent of Christie's Miss Marple mysteries, in that a snake
suddenly rears its head in an apparently benign Garden of Eden. Until the snake
is found and destroyed, anyone could be the next victim. The author's
delineation of the individual personalities is remarkable. The plot is nicely
constructed, with enough red herrings to keep the reader off balance. Penny is a
gifted descriptive writer and the dialogue is lively and fast-paced. Gamache,
far from being superhuman, makes mistakes but tries to learn from them, and he
is an appealing protagonist. The title has a dual meaning. First, it refers to a
painting by Jane Neal, called "Fair Day," which may point to the identity of her
assailant. Additionally, "still life" is a metaphor for a person whose life is
emotionally stunted and who blames others for his problems, instead of
developing into a mature and productive adult. All in all, "Still Life" is an
auspicious debut novel by a promising new author.
The New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Chased the Moon
welcomes you to her newest locale: Walls of Water, North Carolina, where the
secrets are thicker than the fog from the town’s famous waterfalls, and the
stuff of superstition is just as real as you want it to be.
It’s the dubious distinction of thirty-year-old Willa Jackson to hail from
a fine old Southern family of means that met with financial ruin generations
ago. The Blue Ridge Madam—built by Willa’s great-great-grandfather during Walls
of Water’s heyday, and once the town’s grandest home—has stood for years as a
lonely monument to misfortune and scandal. And Willa herself has long strived to
build a life beyond the brooding Jackson family shadow. No easy task in a town
shaped by years of tradition and the well-marked boundaries of the haves and
have-nots.
But Willa has lately learned that an old classmate—socialite do-gooder
Paxton Osgood—of the very prominent Osgood family, has restored the Blue Ridge
Madam to her former glory, with plans to open a top-flight inn. Maybe, at last,
the troubled past can be laid to rest while something new and wonderful rises
from its ashes. But what rises instead is a skeleton, found buried beneath the
property’s lone peach tree, and certain to drag up dire consequences along with
it.
For the bones—those of charismatic traveling salesman Tucker Devlin, who
worked his dark charms on Walls of Water seventy-five years ago—are not all that
lay hidden out of sight and mind. Long-kept secrets surrounding the troubling
remains have also come to light, seemingly heralded by a spate of sudden strange
occurrences throughout the town.
Now, thrust together in an unlikely friendship, united by a full-blooded
mystery, Willa and Paxton must confront the dangerous passions and tragic
betrayals that once bound their families—and uncover truths of the long-dead
that have transcended time and defied the grave to touch the hearts and souls of
the living.
Resonant with insight into the deep and lasting power of friendship, love,
and tradition, The Peach Keeper is a portrait of the unshakable bonds that—in
good times and bad, from one generation to the next—endure forever.

Bruen's writing is incomparable. Jack reminds me of a car stuck on the rail
tracks with the train coming; you don't want to watch but can't turn away in
desperate hope he get off before the train hits. You feel his desperate attempts
to improve his situation but life constantly challenges his resolve. No matter
what, Jack is one of the most compelling characters I read. Bruen also gives the
reader a real sense of being Irish, including the religious, cultural and
historic influences on their lives. On the flyleaf of Cross it says "Do not
expect to put it down unscathed." As opposed to be usual marketing hype, I'd say
that's a true statement for reading any of the Jack Taylor books. They may not
be for everyone because of the profanity and violence, but I find them
exceptional.
It is easy to see friends and loved ones in how these characters deal with
the awfulness of Alzheimer's. The way Fiona attempts to recover when she has
forgotten something went straight to my heart. My own mother would say to me
when she could not remember something (I might name the names of all her
grandchildren, for instance), "your memory is so much better than mine." And
when Fiona manages to remember something, Grant has hope against hope that she
will not get worse and/or she will never have to go to the second floor of the
nursing home where patients with advanced dementia are housed. Finally, Marian,
like many people in her situation, doesn't even have the luxury of leaving her
husband in the home permanently because she would lose their home to cover the
exorbitant bill.
Excellent finish to an terrific series. Must for all ring fans... This book
has collection of 3 stories spaced at different time period in the ring
universe. These stories fill the gaps and answers which previous books left out.
Once again koji suzuki re-defines horror by taking you into depths of
unkown...
Some of the differences between the book and the movies are small, such as
the fact that the main character in both films was female while the reporter and
main character in the book is a male. In addition, the age difference between
the reporter's child in both films was slightly older than the child in the
book. However, there are some major differences as well. I loved the differences
in the plot surrounding Sadako and her mother, as well as the video Sadako
mentally produced. The process of discovery varies immensely as well in the
book, and for the better in my opinion. The book did a wonderful job of keeping
the tension level high as Ryuji and Asakawa painstakingly researched every
tidbit of information they could ascertain from the videotape. Every aspect
every step of the way is described with great detail and in a way that is easily
understood by the reader. The author never asks the reader to take any great
logical leaps. Yet another big difference is the way that the deaths of Sadako's
victims are described. Clearly the directors of both versions of the film took a
great deal of artistic liberty in this area, which is what was needed in order
to make this book into a scarier film. Don't get me wrong, the story is still
quite intense and even scary. However, it is quite different in the form of
text. Suzuki focuses on the thrills and the detective-like inquiry rather than
the in-your-face horror and vividly gory description that might have detracted
from the plot. Furthermore, the bond between Ryuji and Asakawa and their
clashing personalities are expertly described and make for an intriguing
side-plot.
Overall this is a great book that any fan of the movies, or even horror or
suspense in general, should definitely read. Koji Suzuki gives the reader a
slightly different and highly unique spin on the well-known films that should
not be over-looked.
I enjoy the mix of world-building and characters. Most of the main
characters continue from Oath and from the earlier Deed of Paksennarrion, but
there are new ones as well. All are well-rounded; many I'd love to sit in the
pub with over a mug of ale, though some I'd rather not meet in a dark alley - or
anywhere else. I like the sense of integrity in most of the characters, and the
way that integrity doesn't mean that they are all straight-laced, or all in
agreement with each other. I like the way the followers of the different
religions respect each other. I like the way information about how-things-work
is dropped in along the way without derailing the narrative (we learn bits about
the management of a bankers guild, running a noble's estate, and training
squires, among other things). Overall, I like this book even more than I did
Oath, and that's saying something. The only thing I dislike is waiting for the
next one.
A teenage computer prodigy is strangled in Mumbai. A far-right extremist is
killed in a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest. A wealthy businessman is
murdered in Thailand. A pimp in Brooklyn is found stabbed to death and
mysteriously covered by a brown shroud.
What connects the victims is an ancient prophecy that foretells the end of
everything. Now it's up to fledgling New York Times reporter Will Monroe to
prevent it. But his investigation could cost Monroe the woman he loves, as it
leads him into a dangerous shadow world of fundamentalist religion, mysticism,
and biblical prophecies—and toward a set of ancient texts that could save
humankind . . . or destroy every man, woman, and child on the face of the Earth.
A page-turning historical adventure tackling the Chinese occupation of
Tibet
The Deputy glanced down at the white man and then muttered, almost to
himself, "But how did a Westerner travel into Pemako in the first place?"
When the Abbot spoke, his voice was thin and resigned. "It is the end of
our monastery. By nightfall I will be dead and our walls will lie shattered. A
terrible evil is coming from the forest . . ."
A monastery in Tibet is overrun with Chinese soldiers searching for a
sacred relic. The monks flee to seek refuge in hidden caves, but their progress
is hampered by an injured stranger, whose presence threatens them all.
Journalist Nancy Kelly receives a parcel containing a mysterious trumpet made of
bone, and hears an account of a Westerner penetrating into a hidden kingdom in
Tibet, where orchids cover the earth, pagodas hug the hills, and soaring
cathedrals hide underground. Soon she embarks on a dangerous journey into an
ancient land of myth and legend, in search of a secret older than time itself.
