The Retribution
It would be a shame to give away any of the
twisting plot developments, but suffice it to say that the book was gripping,
combining the suspense of both the search for Vance and the investigation of the
serial killings. McDermid does a great job with dialogue and pacing, and she
continues to flesh out the characters of Jordan and Hill (and their co-workers)
so that we feel we are right there in the thick of things with them. The ending
is excellent and most unexpected. It will be fascinating to see what McDermid
does next with Hill and Jordan, as the events of "The Retribution" will
inevitably and profoundly change their relationship. Don't start this one unless
you have the time to let everything else go and devour it in one or two
sittings.
Besides Trent being absolutely fantastic in A
Perfect Blood...sexy...single-minded, and just plain delicious-I honestly don't
think Harrison is going to abandon this yummy loose end. There's too much
invested in it and it seems pretty clear that Harrison is building a
foundation...will Rachel end up taking the plunge? I would have definitely liked
to have seen a repeat of that smoldering kiss in Pale Demon, but still readers
will raise eyebrows over and over again at the delicious hints that Harrison
scatters throughout the book. It's simply tantalizing, but looks like we'll have
to wait to see what happens in Book #11.
Once again, Kim Harrison stole my sleep because I
simply could not put it down. Was it worth it? Hell yeah. Harrison never
disappoints and the quality of A Perfect Blood was consistent with all her
previous novels, energetic and romantically charged. Hands down...I loved
it.
Addison starts right here in our own country with
the abduction of a young girl in broad daylight, an abduction that his main
character, Thomas Clarke, is powerless to stop. From there Clarke is drawn into
a world of intrigue and danger, into the plight of two sisters kidnapped after
losing both parents to a violent tsunami. Compelled to help, Clarke is drawn
into the sexual cesspools of Bombay and Paris, and finally, full circle to our
own back yard as he strives to rescue the younger sister from the brutal
soulless world of sex slavers, dope pushers and pimps. He leaves no stone
unturned and by the end of the book I found myself wrung out, the pages of the
book tearstained and a rage rising within me that I hope never goes
out.
Addison never preaches. Nor does he sensationalize
with too much detail of the sexual abuses endured by his characters, although he
certainly could have. He just tells one hell of a good story that left this
reader wanting to know more about how to help. It's quite simply a wonderful
first novel.
Gigi was an adorable character and actually
reminded me of somebody I know. We meet Lara's aunt Nettie, Don who owns
jewellery shop in Bath and superstar rapper Enjay Seven. Like I said before the
storyline I can't mention but what I can say is that the scenes between Enjay
and Harry had me laughing out loud. My favourite character (and a pretty central
one too) was Flynn. He sounds like a truly wonderful bloke and I kept my fingers
crossed that things worked out how I wanted the whole way through the
book.
Overall this book is one of the best Jill Mansell
has written and I loved every bit of it. Having read it in under a day I can
only say that I suggest you get yourself a copy and settle yourself in for the
night with a hot cuppa and a duvet. What better way to spend an evening? This
book is a true testament to why Jill Mansell has been a successful author for
twenty years.
I have to admit, I didn't like it as much as the
first book, but I was interested enough to get through the book in two days. I'm
not sure where the story is going and I'm not sure if the next book will be the
end of the series. I wasn't happy to see what happened to Mariah, and I'm glad
Gabriel didn't follow suite. Stamp was again in this story and I'm still not
sure where his story is going or will end. I guess the next book will help tie
this all together. I'm very interested to see where this all goes and I hope the
author does not fail us. The books have had a different twist in the
vampire/were creatures and I think it has been done very nicely.
Stephen Leather is truly a master at skillfully
weaving an excellent tale I find Jack Nightingale to be a very credible
and likeable character whose exploits I enjoy following. The author's talent at
producing fully rounded central characters is second to none - I rapidly became
so engrossed in the story I was even standing reading while trying to cook, so
much was my reluctance to put the book down!
I am not generally a great lover of occult type
books but feel this series provides more of a compelling thriller type read and
as I live in a house that is 200 years old, it certainly came across to me as
being quite plausible and extraordinarily thought provoking.
I sincerely hope there will be more books in this
series, as I would love to see where the author takes the central characters to
now. So far this is the third full length book but there is also a short story
to whet your appetite.
The synopsis for "Bond Girl" made it an instant
pick for me usually I carefully go through all my Amazon Vine choices, and
whittle them down book by book. But as I have an interest in finance and
business, I immediately selected this book. Alex is a pretty plucky protagonist,
and I liked her voice from page one. She's sarcastic, and I could see a lot of
myself in her. And even though Alex is fictional, I envied her, especially for
the money she made!
For the most part, I enjoyed "Bond Girl." I carried
it everywhere with me until I finished it. The book is a pretty quick read, and
while Alex works on Wall Street, it doesn't delve too deeply into her actual
job. So if you're looking for a light read, this may be it for you.
These early fossil finds challenged the scientific
thinking on the origin of life (decades prior to Darwin's ON THE ORIGIN OF
SPECIES) and led to intellectual controversies by leading scientists and
religious leaders of the day. With great skill Thomas explores these often
emotional debates in some depth by bringing several geologists into the core of
her novel. A few had met and bought from Mary, others did not believe that her
work could be genuine. While none of them ever acknowledged Mary's
contributions, her fossils were used, nonetheless, in evidence for any of the
theories centred on the newly coined concept of "evolution". Above all, it
challenged the scientists on how the fossil evidence could be brought into
harmony with the Bible and Christian beliefs in Genesis, the Flood and Noah's
Ark. Fascinating debates indeed.
Ernst was sent in place of his more experienced
colleague and mentor Gerhard who had the unfortunate tendency to speak his mind
and was of Jewish extraction. Unable to examine the crated statue he's been sent
to authenticate because of a language miscommunication, Vogler watches as the
original plans to transport the statue via rail disintegrate. Instead two
Italian cops join him as they drive the art work by truck through the
countryside and end up foiling a plot by the art dealer to steal the statue
back. The three day time line to get the statue to the German border falls
victim to a balky truck, the escorts desire to stop at home along the way and
for one to spend the night with his girlfriend. Murder and mayhem
ensue.
The author does a lovely job of conveying the
seductive native of Italy's charms on Ernst's rigid personality. Gerhard had
promised Ernst his own epiphany if he experienced the art and culture of Italy
firsthand. The challenges Ernst faces pre- and post- this week in Italy are
carefully detailed and convey some of the horrors that molds him. If you love
art, the Italian countryside or want to learn a bit more about late 1930's
Germany, this book is for you.
As Jason finds himself once again in Chrissie's
circle, he starts to feel kind of happy. The old feelings between seem to rise
back to life and he really loves his new job. With the new job though come new
responsibilities and soon enough, new meetings. A young, pretty and bright
doctor called Jasmine Kader seems to crave for his attention, something which,
because of his feelings for Chrissie, puts him in an awkward position. But, as
he's soon to find out, that's the least of his problems something seems to
really stink in this new world of his, but he can't exactly say what. Probably
there's a scum with some prescriptions going on but is that all? Obviously
not, otherwise there wouldn't be any hidden cameras in the store. Right? But why
exactly are they there? And who knows about them? Well, the more he finds out,
the more he'll start to think that the world he's entered is no more than an
illusion. Nobody seems to be who he or she claims to be, and as the secret parts
of the story will start to come to light, Jason and Chrissie will find
themselves in the epicenter of a virtual cyclone, of a conspiracy that threatens
to blow the whole world apart. Who is who and who does what? Who to trust? These
are the main questions that they have to ask at some point or another. The
answers are not so easy to come by, and when they do they are just as hard to
comprehend.
In this book we once again read a story about
some ordinary people, who find themselves in extraordinary situations and who
somehow discover within them the necessary wealth of psychological stamina to
endure all the ill fortune that life throws at them. The second half of the book
is so fast-paced that it leaves the reader almost breathless, something that
adds some points to the overall affect of the narration. If there's a weak point
in this book I'd say it's the similes. The author obviously loves them a lot,
but the reader maybe not so much. However, one should never forget that this is
the author's first book, and as such it comes very close to genre
perfection.
I can't see how fans of the series could be
disappointed with Echoes of Betrayal. The continuation of the previous
storylines is great, some new threads woven in as well. Unlike what many authors
get up to, this book is not a placeholder. I was suprised, excited, gratified,
and left wanting more. I can't wait for the next book. I highly recommend this
series as well as Elizabeth Moon's entire body of work for those who enjoy
sci-fi and fantasy.
Spider finds that the new world is different, but
the problems that made his previous role difficult still exist. Spider does
speak for "everyman" in his frustrations that sometimes we are our own worst
enemies in that overly liberal attitudes create many problems and then dilute
our ability to resolve them. So it is a slightly jaded and frustrated Spider
that goes undercover to identify how Somali pirates are identifying target ships
and then a situation arises where Spider needs to get a lot closer to the
action, not knowing that the fall-out from his previous assignment is still
slowly catching up with him.
Stephen Leather's bravery in letting Spider evolve
into a new role and reflecting changes in society does not detract from another
winning thriller. This balances plot and action perfectly and while there are
references to the previous books and characters, they will not stop you enjoying
this if you haven't read them. Having said that, this is a great series that
deserves being read from the very start.
This was a totally engrossing read. I couldn't put
it down. When it was finished I wanted to turn back to chapter one and read it
all over again. If you want a story that takes you completely into another
world, read this book. Wise and haunting and redemptive. Beautiful and
heartbreaking.
I started reading the Sullivan's Series not too
long ago. What I enjoyed most about ths latest addition, I Only Have Eyes For
You, is that this book doesn't take place over such a short period of time like
the other books. This one feature made the story more realistic. What I also
enjoyed is that Ms. Andre is still setting the stage for what is happening in
Lori's life.
This book begins when Joe learns about the
death/suicide of a good friend and fellow Game Warden and the man responsible
for the highly visible Jackson Hole district. Joe is selected from a short list
of Game Wardens to take over his friend's former district. As you might expect,
Joe sees all kinds of reasons to doubt the "official" findings behind his
friend's death, and it doesn't take Joe long to make enemies of the same people
that apparently weren't getting along with the former Warden. Added to the
problems in Jackson Hole, Joe is also having marital problems with the wife he
temporally left behind when he had to relocate to the new district, and if that
weren't enough, she is also experiencing her own form of grave
danger.
In her third book Spencer-Fleming develops
characters you really know and care about. The tension between the priest and
policeman is defined and the reader can feel their personal tension. Secondary
characters are also expanded meaningfully. There is more than one plot taking
place in different time periods, but all is masterfully woven together. A very
unique and interesting page turner.
The complex characters and detailed descriptions of
the locales and operations involved make this book a cut above most thrillers
and spy novels. The pacing isn't breakneck, but it is steady and keeps the pages
turning. There is real tension in the action sequences that keep you guessing
how things will turn out. You may or may not be able to guess some of the
secrets, but even if you do, the journey to get to them is rewarding in
itself.
Alex Berenson has become a must read author, and
John Wells an iconic character. I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of
The Shadow Patrol, and it has cemented Berenson's well-deserved reputation.
Highly recommended for any fan of thrillers and spy novels.
Let me preface this by saying I have read almost
all of Ms. K-W's other books and loved them. This one is no exception. I would
HIGHLY recommend that you read her other 4 books in the Big Bad Wolf series
before reading this one. They will give you back-story and insight that you need
to really understand the players on the field in this book (though we are
introduced to some yummy new characters)
The book starts out by taking numerous points of
view. I was a bit concerned at first at how much we jump around, but I now
realize that this was done to set things up not only for this book but also for
the others in this series to come.
The author shows the reader some of our favorite
characters from the BBW series and also introduces us to Evie, our not quite
human female lead who is an indie author and animal lover. The Vamp King, Roman
D'Angelo, is ancient. Try 3,000 years ancient and falls for our 30 year old Evie
at first sight. He is of course tall, gorgeous, and everything Evie ever
imagined as a writer of paranormal literature.
I don't want to give anything away, but let's just
say that things seriously heat up after the main characters have to battle a
seriously evil vamp named Charles, and several enslaved Akyri. I'm really
looking forward to and hoping to hear more about Thanatos, the Phantom King and
also Ramses, a "God of Gods."
I was not disappointed with this book or its
ending! It left me wanting to know more about what will happen in this world of
the Kings.
Margot Vetter's life has taken a major slide
downhill in the past 8 months. Framed for a murder she did not commit, she's now
forced to assume a fake identity, dye her hair and leave her comfortable
California home, webdesign business and life behind. She's barely scraping by,
working three jobs, living in a dump. The last thing she needs is a stalker!
First her porch is covered in rose petals, then a dead dog, then splattered with
blood - not to mention the burglary. When she approaches the "scarily gorgeous"
Davy, he initially makes it clear he wants nothing to do with her. But the more
they talk the more his inherent rescuing tendencies come to the surface and he
decides to help her.
But given all she's gone through, Margo is willing
to trust Davy only so far and with only so much of her story. Add to that Davy's
cool, quiet and stoic nature and you've got two people who are a bit
communication challenged. This leads to lots of heated arguments that tend to
lead to really steamy sex. Margo is comfortable sharing and showing her emotions
and can't stand that he isn't. She pushes and goads him into showing
emotions but he'd rather bury them with meditiation, Kung Fu and the like.
While this emotional melodrama plays out when they're alone, they work to
discover who is stalking her and why. And they more they learn, the more danger
they are both in!
I love le Carre's prose. It's highly stylized and
descriptive, but not flowery. In spite of myself, at times I was almost holding
my breath, especially nearer the end of the novel, when I was filled with
trepidation and worry about the family, with almost a sense of foreboding at
what was to come.
This is a good old-fashioned espionage thriller,
with a great deal of bite and, unusual for a thriller, very good character
sketches. I definitely recommend this one as a must-read for thriller
fans.
Ok, Take the Mad Max post bomb world, but the cause
was not a bomb. The cause was scientist releasing something that morphs DNA into
legendary creatures: Vampires, werewolves, banshees, witches, etc. Now take a
female who turned into the grim reaper. She walks the roads delivering souls to
their afterlife... whether they want to go or not. The female grim reaper
reaches one of the isolated besieged "human only" towns. This is where the fun
starts. This is one of my favorite Mina Carter's to date. I am reading up on the
others, but his one really held me to the end. The romance was very well
written. It was not implausible, to fast, or to slow. It was just right. So, if
you liked Mad Max and like paranormal romances, this is the book for
you.
In addition to being entertaining and well-written
mystery novels, each of the Tres Navarre books has chronicled important changes
in the character's life. The changes that have occurred between the last title
and this one, however, are perhaps the biggest yet. Tres' long-term fans won't
find many of the familiar characters that have made up his supporting cast to
this point. As always, though, the case here ends up tugging on significant
strings from Tres' own life. It's satisfying to know Tres is not static for
Riordan the character continues to evolve and mature, and there's still more for
readers to learn about his past, as well as his future.
I read it that Ms. Davis focuses mostly on ancient
Rome and for her to write about England during this time period in such detail
must have required a great deal of research and a significant mental shift. I
truly enjoyed the book the characters were well developed and I found I
cared about what happened to them. When one of the towns was attacked by the
Royalists I was completely shocked. The scenes were heart wrenching and
unbelievable. I thought I knew quite a lot about this period of time but after
reading this book I realized I knew very little about the lives and hardships of
the times. I am grateful to Ms. Davis for opening my eyes and providing an
enjoyable read as well.
Josie has just married Mathew, whose 3 teenage
children live with their mother Nadine. Josie's son Rufus will live with Josie
and Mathew but secretly Rufus prefers his father Tom's house, especially since
Tom met Elizabeth......what will happen when Nadine relinquishes the 3 teenagers
to Josie and Mathew>? Will Elizabeth be able to give up Rufus even if she
cannot see a future with his father? This is a sentimental but highly readable
book on the effects faced by adults and children, when family dynamics change.
Trollope has a gift for succint and emotive language whereby the reader as
onlooker can be totally absorbedinto the minutae of family life, and ordinary
domestic events are invested with a poignancy that lingers as surely as similar
real life scenarios . Th story takes us through the adjustments needed by two
divorces and a remarriage, the consequences managing to rebound on every adult
and child involved. The traumas of key figures such as Josie the new stepmother,
fighting the negative stereotypes , despite Nadine's irrational and abusive
behaviour toward her children, are compulsive, as are Elizabeth's struggles with
the destructive pattern of possessiveness set by Tom's adult children. The
reader is made increasingly aware that no clear cut answers are in view, but the
unexpected joys of people overcoming emotional baggage, make for a positive and
generous novel on the extended family model.
Gun Games is an intense story that will lead you
into the inner workings of the teenage minds the minds of those in love,
and the minds of those who hurt without feeling, and the secrets that they keep.
For readers who have experienced forbidden teenage love you will find yourself
rooting for Gabe & Yasmine to find a way to be open with their love, but you
may also remember what it was like to lie and deceive those that trusted you.
Ms. Kellerman has the skilled ability to bring her readers right into the pages
of her book so that you feel as if you are experiencing everything right along
with characters themselves. Gun Games is an intense story that will grab you
from page one, and hold you right up to the mesmerizing conclusion.
A rumble in the jungle for the SEALs second in the
new series. The SEAL unit known as Brannigan's Brigands is dispatched to the
Bolivian swampland and jungle terrain on a campaign to engage and destroy a
fascist movement.
The third McClure-Carson suspense thriller (see
First Daughter and Last Snow) is loaded with action starting with the opening
sequence when Fearington is in lock down due to the homicide and never slows
down even with a zillion twists until the final confrontation. The obvious
villain Uncle Henry comes across as a caricature who apparently wants to control
his niece as he does everything else including the sex slave trafficking
importation and questionable banking. The whodunit is fun to follow as the clues
lead to her Uncle, the terrorist Syrian and an Albanian mob leader in this
enjoyable over the top of the Washington Monument thriller.
Edinburgh's toughest cop, Bob Skinner, looks into
his past to assuage his demons in Quintin Jardine's thrilling new
mystery
Skinner revisits his nightmares: old but not
forgotten. Fifteen years in the past, newly promoted Detective Superintendent
Bob Skinner is called to investigate a most brutal death. A man lies at the deep
end of an empty swimming pool, his neck broken and almost every other bone in
his body shattered. Soon, an organized crime connection looms, and bloody
retribution spreads to a second city. Violence then erupts on a new front, as a
vicious knifeman seems to be targeting Edinburgh's gay population. As if this
double dose of homicide isn't enough for a single man with a teenage daughter to
raise and protect, Skinner's personal life takes a similar, perilous twist. Can
he stay on the side of the angels, or will he fall?
The story itself is relatively straight-forward,
with no major surprises. It's the character development and the breath-taking
descriptions of a dead future Europe that made me bump this up from 3 to 4
stars. There are three main viewpoint characters: Paul, a young man raised by an
old woman in the ruins of Paris, with no other human contact until he's captured
by a group of traveling cannibals Samara, the new leader of a struggling
colony in the south of France and Dan, a co-leader of a similar colony in
Copenhagen. These three are slowly entangled in each other's schemes by their
search for salvation - for themselves, and for their people. The brilliance in
this story is not the almost retro-post-apocalyptic plot, but in the way that
Brown builds each set of characters to illustrate humanity's will to survive. On
one side you have a group determined to hold on to their humanity - to be
merciful and compassionate in the face of a world where there is no law and
order, just drifting sand and death. On the other side you have a group no less
determined to survive, but at the cost of what ultimately makes them
human.
Great Sky River is a tale of survival for a small
group of humans who use tremendously advanced technology to survive in a
location where humanity was perhaps not engineered to exist - the center of the
galaxy. All throughout the series, there is this oppressing weight that the sky
is falling (which it is) as a vast machine empire has crushed humanity everytime
that humanity has started to stand up and become a threat/challenger to the
machines but the machines are never able to eliminate humanity, some always
remain - and this is the story of one group of people who literally fight for
survival.
There is harsh death as well as the balm of new
life within O'Brien's world, which makes it realistic and meaningful. I have
read plenty of YA dystopian novels but none of them can come close to the subtly
expressive and thought-provoking themes that Birthmarked contained. I was
enthralled from the first page, contemplative, and reveling throughout the
entire story. It was simply an amazing debut read. Every reader will want to
accompany this courageous heroine on this journey to discover exactly what she
is capable of, unravel the mystery of the coded ribbon, and whether she can step
unfettered into the future.
A Rainbow of Blood: The Union in Peril An
Alternate History
The beginning chapters of the novel also suffer
from information overload, as Tsouras dumps the structure of British, Canadian,
and American units, the details of their weapons, and the details of their flags
in such a way that doesn't advance the story. It might be necessary, but such
information might be better detailed in an appendix rather than put into the
start of the story, when we're trying to grasp the plot rather than
inconsequential things.
On the whole, though, it's definitely worth
reading. The point of departure from our history is unique in mainstream
fiction, the characters are interesting (particularly one particular scene with
Lincoln), and the plot is xecuted well. The story moves quickly, and I can't
wait to enjoy the next volume.
Dangerous Waters: Modern Piracy and Terror
on the High Seas
While sailing alone one night in the shipping lanes
across one of the busiest waterways in the world, John Burnett was attacked by
pirates. Through sheer ingenuity and a little bit of luck, he survived, and his
shocking firsthand experience became the inspiration for this book. Dangerous
Waters charts the resurgence of piracy in recent years and reveals why it poses
a significant threat to our safety and security.
The Essential Gandhi: An Anthology of His
Writings on His Life, Work, and Ideas
Mohandas K. Gandhi, called Mahatma (“great soul”),
was the father of modern India, but his influence has spread well beyond the
subcontinent and is as important today as it was in the first part of the
twentieth century and during this nation’s own civil rights movement. Taken from
Gandhi’s writings throughout his life, The Essential Gandhi introduces us to his
thoughts on politics, spirituality, poverty, suffering, love, non-violence,
civil disobedience, and his own life. The pieces collected here, with
explanatory head notes by Gandhi biographer Louis Fischer, offer the clearest,
most thorough portrait of one of the greatest spiritual leaders the world has
known. “Gandhi was inevitable. If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is
inescapable. . . . We may ignore him at our own risk.” –Dr. Martin Luther King,
Jr.
A single source for accurate scientific information
on herbal remedies!
The Handbook of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies
is the reference tool you need to distinguish those herbal products that have
been clinically tested from those for which there is little or no real evidence
that substantiates or disputes their claims of efficacy. This essential volume
provides a snapshot of 160 herbal products that have been tested in clinical
trials. Details of the products and the clinical trials they underwent are here
in an easy-to-read, at-a-glance format.
Each botanical profile in The Handbook of
Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies contains a summary section (table, text and
references), followed by product information and clinical trials for that
particular product. An evaluation of the strength of the evidence from the
trials, along with the context for therapeutics is included to give you a
complete picture of each remedy and its usefulness or lack thereof. If there is
more than one product based on a particular botanical then the trials are
grouped according to the product.
This valuable book also makes purchasing easy with
manufacturer contact information. With over 30 individual botanicals and 10
multi-ingredient formulas, 160 products and 360 clinical studies, The Handbook
of Clinically Tested Herbal Remedies is the book you need to make an informed
selection of herbal products. Not only does it list proprietary herbal products
that have been tested in controlled clinical studies and provide a rating of the
quality of those trials, but, it also describes the fundamentals of herbal
medicine, including regulation, characterization, standardization,
bioavailability, efficacy, safety, pharmacopoeial monographs as well as
incentives, or lack of incentive, for US and European manufacturers to conduct
clinical studies.
Contributors to the chapters describing the
fundamentals of herbal medicine include:

The third, and final, installment in Mario Puzo's
epic chronicle of the Corleone crime family-one of the most enduring lineages in
American literature and cinema-achieves a stunning crescendo with a story that
imagines the role of the Mafia in the assassination of a young, charismatic
president.
It's impossible to overstate the influence of Mario
Puzo's The Godfather, which has become an essential part of our cultural
lexicon. Puzo's novel about the secret world of organized crime became a
megabestseller and an instant classic. The book inspired the Francis Ford
Coppola films-unprecedented successes in their own right-and launched a national
obsession with the Mafia that continues unabated today.
In The Godfather's Revenge-again authorized by the
Puzo Estate-Mark Winegardner moves the Corleone family onto the biggest stage of
all: the intersection of organized crime and national politics. A subordinate to
Michael Corleone, New Orleans underboss Carlo Tramonti is publicly humiliated
when the U.S. Attorney General-President Danny Shea's brother-has him arrested
and deported to Colombia. Tramonti eventually returns, hell-bent on settling
scores, and triggers a series of events destined to change the course of
American history. Corleone, though haunted by the death of his brother Fredo,
knows that this is no time for weakness-and so, with fearless consigliere Tom
Hagen leading the way, a new path for the future is forged.
As the dramatic twists of The Godfather's Revenge
take the reader from Las Vegas to Miami to New Orleans, from the power alleys of
Washington, D.C., to the remote jungles of Colombia, the puppet master behind
the curtain remains Michael Corleone, the tortured prodigal son who is
determined to redefine his family's legacy and make his father-the original
Godfather-proud.
The second volume in the internationally
bestselling Brethren trilogy, Crusade is gripping historical fiction that “grows
more relevant by the day” (Raymond Khoury, bestselling author of The Last
Templar)
An international bestseller, Crusade is a
fast-paced medieval adventure portraying the rising tide of political pressures
that led East and West to war in the 13th century.
After years of bloodshed, peace finally reigns in
the Middle East, in part due to the efforts of Will Campbell and a mysterious
group known as the Brethren. However, a cabal of ruthless Western merchants aims
to reignite war in the Holy Land, while Prince Edward—once a trusted member of
the Brethren—has made a promise to the pope: he will take the Cross to Jerusalem
and lead a new crusade. To survive the escalating conflict and protect his
family, Will must harness all his knowledge and courage.
What’s a girl to do when there are two guys who
seem like The One?
Just when Courtney has found the Best Boyfriend
Ever (aptly named Grant Superior), she has to leave him to go to college,
because apparently the universe doesn’t want her to be happy. Now that she’s
three states away, what’s going to happen to her Superior relationship? And what
about that cute guy she works with at college? No, not him. Him. Definitely
getting in the way with his cuteness. But not distracting Courtney enough to
make her stop wondering what exactly happened between Grant and her best friend,
Beth, back home. Why can’t dating be as easy as eating a healthy vegan diet? Not
that she’s ever managed that, either, but still.
Will Courtney ever figure out how to get this love
thing right?

“game-playing” strategy - it’s a PLAN to be so completely YOURSELF, so
completely authentic and truthful, so deeply in touch with your own emotions and
the sensations of your body, that you’ll be able to quickly get rid of all your
old patterns and ways of relating to men that don’t work and bring in Mr. Right.
If you’re already a “girlfriend” and want to ease into this, I’ll show you
exactly how to interact, speak to, or flirt with every man you come in contact
with. You’ll be able to practice my powerful Rori Raye Tools without having to

Nevermore: The Final Maximum Ride
Adventure
One last chance... for Max, Fang, and
Dylan... before it all ends.
Are you ready for the final chapter? Are you ready
for the ultimate flight? Because THIS IS IT. One last incredible, explosive
adventure with an astonishing ending that no one could have seen
coming.
The Candle Man
1912. Locked in an eerily quiet dining room on the
Titanic, a mysterious man tells a young girl his life story as the ship begins
to sink. It all starts in Whitechapel, London in 1888...
In the small hours of the night in a darkened
Whitechapel alley, young Mary Kelly stumbles upon a man who has been seriously
injured and is almost unconscious in the gutter. Mary - down on her luck and
desperate to survive - steals his bag and runs off into the night.
Two days later, an American gentleman wakes in a
hospital bed with no memory of who he is or how he got there. He has suffered a
serious head injury, and with no one to help him remember who he is he starts to
wonder how he will ever find his way home.
One terrible truth links these two lost souls in
the dark world of Victorian London - a truth that could ruin the name of the
most influential man in the land...
Back in 1912, as the Titanic begins its final
shuddering descent to the bottom of the frozen, black Atlantic, the truth behind
a series of murders that have hung like a dark fog over London for more than two
decades is about to be revealed... the identity of Jack the Ripper.

TimeRiders: City of
Shadows
Liam O'Connor should have died at sea in
1912.
Maddy Carter should have died on a plane in
2010.
Sal Vikram should have died in a fire in
2026.
But all three have been given a second chance - to
work for an agency that no one knows exists. Its purpose: to prevent time travel
destroying history . . .
Hunted by cyborg assassins from the future, the
TimeRiders must abandon New York and go on the run. They escape to Victorian
London and the streets where Jack the Ripper roams. But, before they can

Web of Angels
Just as Jodi Picoult tackles controversial
contemporary issues in her compelling domestic dramas, in Web of Angels
bestselling novelist Lilian Nattel explores the vivid reality of what used to be
called multiple personality disorder. A Vintage Canada trade paperback
original.
On the surface of things, Sharon Lewis is a lot like any
other happily married mother of 3: she is the beating heart of a house full of
kids, cooking and chaos, the one who always knows the after-school practice
schedule, where her husband put the car keys and who needs a little extra TLC.
Her kids and husband think she's a little spooky, actually, the way she can
anticipate the tensions of any situation and maybe they love her all the more
for the extra care she gives them.
Life is definitely good until
the morning Heather Edwards, a pregnant teenaged friend of the family, kills
herself. The reverberations of that act, and the ugly secrets that sparked it,
prove deeply unsettling to the whole family, and stir up Sharon's own troubling
secret: she has DID, or dissociative identity disorder. And the multiples inside
the woman the world knows as Sharon seem to know what happened to Heather, and
what may be happening to Heather's surviving sister. Will Sharon's need to
protect the innocent cause her to finally come clean about her true nature with
her family and friends, and not just in the anonymous chat rooms on the web
where she's connected to others like herself? Will a woman with DID be able to
persuade her quiet and respectable community that evil things can happen even in
the nicest homes?
Prince of Air &
Darkness
Kiera thinks her mother is nuts for her stories of
being impregnated by the Seelie King. While it was a little frustrating at times
to see Kiera's logical human response (especially when as a reader you know that
her mom is right), it was also very realistic. This isn't a book where the human
lead finds out about the "truth" and then just rolls with it. Some convincing
and freaking out has to happen first. Also, Kiera is not a butt-kicking heroine,
so if you need that in your paranormals, be warned.
Endlessly
I am really going to miss this series, Evie is as
snarky as ever with her pink Taser and still trying to live a normal life, sort
of. She lives with her paranormal boyfriend Lend and has the freedom now to help
other paranormals stay under the radar away from the IPCA. But in Evie's life
there is never a normal day and suddenly all hell has broken loose, the Dark
Queen is looking for her, Lend is taken in her place and something is seriously
wrong at the IPCA. All the paranormals are gathering and want Evie to open a
gate back to Faerie and Evie is tired of being on everyone's hit list. As much
as she tries to avoid the prophecy, it keeps coming back to haunt her. All these
expectations are wearing her down and not to mention the seriously stalkerish
Reth who is gorgeous in an otherworldly kind of way and obviously loves Evie as
much as he is capable of but he is still a little scary most of the time. Jack
is back and not trying to kill her which is a bonus and Lend her thoughtful,
loving and ever faithful boyfriend is always near by to offer a shoulder to cry
on. Evie just has to figure out how to save everyone without sacrificing herself
in the process. I thought this book tied up all the different threads and
brought the story to a satisfactory conclusion and I am just sad that I won't
get to read another Evie and Lend story.
The Doomsday Vault: A Novel of the
Clockwork Empire
Baroness Alice Michaels has one last chance to
rejoin high society, but a zombie attack gets in the way. Airman Gavin Ennock is
stranded in London by pirates. The Third Ward wants both of them as agents, but
there's more going on than the Ward is letting on.
THE DOOMSDAY BOOK is a great piece of steampunk,
with zombies and mad scientists. The characters are fun to read about and you
gasp when they get into trouble.
Once a Princess
Sasha is sucked back through a portal to
Khanarenth, against her will, by a couple of resistance fighters. There she
learns that her father has been missing since she and her mother fled to Earth.
Sasha's kidnappers want her help to find him. Sasha has her own ideas about what
she wants to do though.
As soon as Sun realizes Sasha has been taken, she
returns to Khanarenth herself with the intention of rescuing Sasha. She ends up
a "guest" of King Canardan - as attractive and charming as she remembered him,
he's still scheming and determined to hold on to his ill-gotten throne at all
costs.
Dark Craving
Fueled by ancient magic and enflamed by human
desire the Dragon King known as Hal can transform himself at will into one of
the legendary winged creatures he is sworn to protect. But one thing he can
never do is fall in love...with a mortal woman.
Searching for her
brother in Scotland and succumbing to the freezing cold Cassie Hunter awakens to
find herself in the arms of a magnificent Highland warrior. Across his chest is
the tattoo of a fiery dragon. And in his heart is a burning passion that, once
unleashed, will consume them both...body and soul.
This is a story
of destiny and desire, magic and mystery, warriors and lovers. These are the
forbidden cravings of the Dark Kings.
Tarnished: The St. Croix
Chronicles
The real adventure of the story begins to unfold in
earnest when Cherry delivers a bounty that she is never paid for and her boss
denies ever having received. It is while on the trail of her missing bounty that
her readers and Cherry explore the seedier side of Victorian London a
world full of drugs, murder, and intrigue that the questioning mind of our
bounty hunting beauty is loathe to let rest. The winding road of intrigue has
more than a few surprises for Miss St.Croix, some of which, if she is not
careful could prove deadly.
This is a very fast-paced read that never gives
readers a chance to get bored. The story is so engrossing that readers can't
help being drawn in to the dark recesses of London's underbelly as well as the
pomp and circumstance that surround the "social elite". This is a very good
first book to what promises to be a great series Steampunk at its
best!
Black Halo
The first 100 pages or so the group is separated
from each other for an extended time and some undergo what seem to be
hallucinations, which at times made it hard to follow what was real and imagined
for these characters as at least half talk to themselves quite a bit outside of
these events anyway. But they are also some of the most illuminating scenes
including one that is getting to be known as the philosophical monkey. Hint:
He's a bastard.
James Potter and the Vault of
Destinies
I stopped reading the first time after the silver
thread bit. I mean, here's this 13 year old kid and this unstable adult and he
loves her enough to die for her? Creepy and weird. I picked it back up but quit
reading again when the crimson thread was stolen and he covered up the
eyewitness account of Petra's presence just because he "knew" she was innocent.
I started reading again for the 3rd time and got caught up in clutchcudgel and
enjoyed hearing more from Albus...and then the end stunned me. I am really,
really shocked by the character loss and the torch event (trying to be vague to
avoid spoilers) and now I'm ready to start the next book...
The Wild Side: Urban Fantasy with an Erotic
Edge
Some stories draw from the authors's previously
established works. Others are created from scratch. Some of these may have
sequels.
Recommended for fans of these authors and anyone
else who enjoys tales of paranormal romance and other erotic fantasies. Read and
enjoy!
The Calling
The Calling has just become the best book that I
have read this year. Without a doubt I can easily see myself raving about this
book to every book lover I come into contact with for a long time to come! My
husband would pass me while I was reading The Calling and stop to ask what I was
smiling about. You can't help but smile while reading this book. It's not a
comedy, but it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, a real feel good book.
Justin and Mandy are absolutely AMAZING characters. Readers are in store for an
emotional roller coaster. I do not think there is a single emotion that reader
does not experience at some point. Mandy and Justin do not have an easy
relationship. They have many trials that they must face in the developing and
strengthening of their relationship. After reading the greatest epilogue ever I
turned off my Kindle looked down at it and sighed "wow." Favorite quote from
Mandy: "If you don't stop, I'll have a heart attack. If you do stop, I'll
spontaneously combust. Your choice." Wow, to have a man make you feel
that!
The Arena Wars
The dim moonlight illuminating the forest was just
bright enough for me to see clearly in. My movements were graceful and never
faltered. Each foot was placed carefully one in front of the other, and not a
single pebble underneath was disturbed. The slightest sound or vibrations would
scare away my prey.
Tempest Rising
Jane True is somewhat reminiscent of Sookie
Stackhouse as she tumbles down the rabbit hole and doesn't know who to trust.
But she is her own character entirely. And I love her internal ramblings. They
seriously made me laugh out loud. Nicole Peeler puts the mental ramblings we all
have, but never admit to, on paper. Or at least I hope I'm that funny in my
head. I especially love the whole devil on one shoulder and angel on the other
inner dialogue. Only it's Jane's libido and her guilty common sense that battle.
Especially when her libido was that carnivorous plant from Little Shop of
Horrors. (Feed meeeeeeee!)
I also love that while there are vampires in this
book it is not a vampire book. Matter of fact, vampires aren't even the "ancient
all powerful, apathetic to the workings of us puny humans" characters in this
book. So while this is a paranormal book and the characters are similar to the
myths of vampires, shapeshifters, ect, they are original but without being TOO
off the beaten path.
Tempest's Legacy
I honestly can't find any faults with this book I
liked what Peeler did with it & I love where the direction is going. Maybe
it's a little fangirlish, but it is what it is. And this book is awesome with a
side of fun sauce. The only thing I regret about this is that my ARC will expire
after a certain amount of time & I'll then have to wait to buy a copy to
keep my collection up to date.
Tangled Threads
Tangled Threads, Estep's fourth volume in the
Elemental Assassins Series starts off with a bang and keeps the pace going. I
like how she integrates the action, story lines, background information, and
personal life of our heroine without creating a lull. Everything is balanced
well to maintain the readers attention. Gin's progression in her elemental
abilities with each book are starting to come together. What I didn't like about
Tangled Threads was all of the recapping from the previous books Estep was
including. I know it's necessary, but I felt like there was too much of it
especially in the beginning of the book. Some of it also seemed
redundant.
Talulla Rising
The story opens with our werewolf heroine Talulla
in seclusion. At first, her only intent is to stay off the grid as various
parties still have an interest in hunting her down. Ambivalent about new
motherhood, Talulla must confront a lot of inner demons when her son is
abducted. And more from responsibility than from love, she intends to rescue the
newborn at any cost. Crossing paths with old foes, strange cults, mercenaries,
and unexpected new alliances this journey of maternal focus actually starts to
bring a humanity back to Talulla that she had been missing. Like Jake from "The
Last Werewolf," Talulla is a fascinatingly complex character one you may not
always like, but one that feels inherently real (strange as she's a werewolf).
The story remains an interesting blend of introspection and action set pieces
and both are done quite well.
Heart of Stone
This could definitely be a mini-series on
television and I would not be surprised if we see it soon. This author is a
fabulous writer, one of the best I've read lately. Definitely a writer's writer.
I stayed up to 1:00 a.m. until I finished it, if that gives you some idea of the
quality of this book. Great, great book, really well-written and thought out.
Highly, highly recommend!
Her Dark and Dangerous
Lord
The mercenary’s innocent bride Lord Stefan de
Montfort is a true rebel – with the scars to prove it. Deemed a mercenary and
exiled from England, he now lives by his own rules. When he plucks Englishwoman
Anne Melford from the sea, and takes her to his chateau in Normandy, the
spirited beauty fires within Stefan a disturbing, forbidden desire. Such a lady
could never marry a scoundrel like him – but this dark and dangerous lord is
determined to break one last rule and claim her as his bride!
High Priest of
California
The High Priest of California is Russell Haxby, a
used car salesman, who meets a woman at a dance club. The plot revolves around
Russell waiting to get her in the sack. If you've read Willeford, you're
familiar with his a-hole characters. Haxby is the king of the a-holes! As usual
Willeford takes a tired, well-worn plot and puts his sick and addictive
'english' on it. In place of the juicy tidbits of art history insight you get in
other works like Burnt Orange Heresy, Wild Wives and Pick Up, you get
Willeford's sentiments on Joyce and Kafka! If you're a fan of Miami Blues then
you'll see the roots of "junior" frenger in Haxby as well. High Priest is
Willeford 1st, and one of his best!
Hit and Run: Gideon of Scotland
Yard
One of the best Chase books I have read. I have
read more than 100 of his titles, but unfortunately I cannot find many of his
books in USA. I own a few of his books and welcome enquiries from others who
also own his books.
It Happened One Bite
It Happened One Bite is the unveiling of another
exciting foray into historical romance flavored with paranormal spice. It was
great seeing some of the previous characters from the Westfield brothers'
adventures and it brought a sense of community and continuity to this new
venture. I thought the ending to be romantic and bittersweet. The mystery gets
revealed and Blaire and James sort of get Aiden's blessing, which had a humorous
edge to it. I had a very nice time visiting with Blaire and James and can't wait
to find out what happens next. I'm glad Ms. Dare has created a new world for
fans to enjoy.
Like a Hole in the
Head
Ex-army musketry trainer, Jay Benson and his wife
Lucy's dream of running a shooting school turns sour as the school heads towards
certain closure. They need money - quickly, and a lot of it. At the eleventh
hour Augusto Savanto, head of a vast corporation in Venezuela, walks into their
lives with a proposition they can scarcely refuse - he will pay them $50,000 to
turn his son into an expert marksman, in nine days. Desperate for money they
accept the challenge but find themselves in a deadly game of ruthless vendettas
and vengeful murder.
Live Wire: Elite Ops
Lora Leigh has the amazing ability to emotionally
invest you in each one of her characters. Throughout the entire SEAL and Ops
books I valued seeing each character grow and find their true happiness. I
not only recommend this book... I implore who ever is going to read it that they
also read the SEAL and Op books that have come before it (if you haven't done so
already). More than worth the time... more than worth the money.
Lord of Seduction
Viscount Thorne wants nothing to do with the
potential brides his ducal father keeps throwing in his path, or the young
ladies who keep chasing him bent on matrimony. He does, however, want to return
to London to search for the villain who murdered his best friend. So he
convinces Diana Sheridan to pose as his fiancee. Because of a scandal in her
past, Diana isn't interested in love or marriage, but wants to pursue her art
career and to protect her flighty cousin Amy from a fortune hunter. But when
Thorne and Diana go to London to oversee Amy's Season, their pretend betrothal
really heats up since they can't help falling for each other. This book is
filled with wonderful characters, delightful subplots, sizzling red-hot
chemistry, and exciting danger as Thorne and Diana negotiate scandal and London
society in search of a murderer. Highly recommended for readers who love sensual
Regency historicals.
Master of Temptation
As the story unfolds to reveal the mystery of the
secret society called the Guardians, the time spent between the two of them
begins to sizzle. This romance turns passionate and the passion turns to a love
unbound. As much as I enjoy the notorious series of books by Nicole Jordan,
I am already in love with the more laid back, open mindedness of the
islanders.
Moonshine: Cal
Leandros
As entertaining and facinating as the supporting
characters are it is still Cal and Niko's book. And although their love and
support is usually expressed through sarcasm, nothing can come between the
brothers. Like Nightlife "Moonshine" is full of creativity and innovative
antagonists. The use of language is masterful...I wish I had as much wit and
could banter as well as the characters in this book. Best of all Rob Thurman
proves once again it is possible to write an intelligent, compelling and
exciting supernatural book without using smut to sell it.
More Deadly than the
Male
This novel is a terrifying trip in the London
suburbs, which has something reminding of the well known classic "Les mysteres
de Paris" (Eugene Sue). And this door to door job was the first job of
James, so we are given an intensive course of salesmanship, with all the bad
tricks. What a lesson ! All commercial manuals are beaten.
Surrender to Me
The Wicked Lovers series is one of my favorite
erotic series. This one doesn't disappoint. It's the story of Hunter, a Navy
SEAL on leave and Kata, a parole officer with a long history that's made it hard
for her to truly connect to a lover. They meet in Vegas. Kata's friend with
benefits, Ben, has a surprise for her.Kata has always fantasized about a menage
a trois and he's brought in his buddy Hunter to make it come true. What Ben
doesn't count on is the fact that Hunter is wild about her the moment he sees
her and suddenly doesn't want to share. Ben makes it easy by getting drunk and
passing out. After several hours of amazing sex, Hunter and Kata feel a deep
connection. They impulsively get married at a Vegas wedding chapel, but the next
morning Kata rethinks the whole thing. Hunter is so overwhelmingly alpha and
dominant that she's utterly unsure she wants a relationship with him. He's into
BDSM and Kata, while attracted to him and his lifestyle thinks it's not for
her.She leaves him in Vegas, but he follows her back. It's a good thing since
someone is stalking Kata and Hunter has to save her life. I loved this book for
the deep connection between the characters. They fight, but he's the only man
who could bring her to the place she needs to be. Also - great follow up on
beloved characters! I loved seeing Jack and Morgan, Deke and Kimber and Luc and
Alyssa again.
The September Society
"The September Society" is the second installment
in the Charles Lenox Mysteries, this time involving crimes that occur in two
different eras: the first, when two men are murdered in Punjab shortly after the
Anglo-Sikh War and the second, nineteen years later in 1866, when a young
Oxonian, George Payson, vanishes. Lenox is approached by George's worried
mother, Lady Annabelle, who prevails upon Lenox to find him. Lenox travels to
Oxford where he discovers a collection of bizarre clues in George's room--a dead
cat, a red string, a fountain pen, a cryptic note and a card bearing the words
`September Society'. Compounding the mystery is the disappearance of George's
friend and confidante, Bill Dabney.
The Shark-Infested
Custard
He is so accomplished that you almost think you
could do it yourself. As in other of his novels, he finds opportunity to
satirize men's clothing styles (early on, he discovered the vein of humor
uncovered by whoever induced men, or their wives, to believe that male clothing
styles should change every year or so - remember the Nehru jacket?). I read this
book while recuperating from minor abdominal surgery, and the description of the
"makout" attire affected by one of the buddies put me in danger of literally
splitting my sides. All in all, this book is among the best from an always
superior writer.
The Widow's War
An unbelievably moving and provocative story, with
characters that come alive and draw the reader in. Seldom has a story invoked
such emotion within, as The Widow's War managed to do. It is a literary work of
art ,that demands a permanent fixture on one's bookshelf. I felt such
compassion and extreme admiration for Lyddie. She was such a strong and likable
person. It was easy to step into her and go through each emotion and hardship,
along with the bits of happiness. This story also allows one to catch a glimpse
of life in the mid-1700's - especially from a woman's perspective. How thankful
it made me to be a woman of today's society, rather than one from that time
period, where a woman was more or less viewed as a possession, of sorts, who
lived through and for a man, rather than for herself. The Widow's War - so
appropriately titled - is a delectable piece of literary dessert, meant to be
savored and cherished from page to page. It is sure to become a classic and is
one that I will highly recommend to family, friends and book groups. This story
is a definite not to be missed read!
The Wise Man's Fear
Well, merciful Tehlu be praised, Patrick Rothfuss
took his time, polishing and refining his manuscript until it stood up to his
own standards. The result is The Wise Man's Fear, a novel that for the most part
fulfills the promise of The Name of the Wind. You'll find the same sweeping
prose, deft characterization, rousing adventure, emotional highs and lows, and
just plain and simple gripping reading of the "I couldn't put this book down
even if my house caught fire around me" variety.
Also, there's much more of it, in terms of sheer
length. Weighing in at about 1,000 pages, The Wise Man's Fear is a heftier tale
with a much broader scope. Where most of The Name of the Wind was set in and
around the University, the sequel starts off there but soon has Kvothe venturing
out into the world. As a result, some of the blank spaces on the map start to
get filled in, giving this fantasy world a welcome new level of depth. Make no
mistake, Kvothe is still front and center, but the details of the world's
geography are starting to come into focus, as well as its history, with the
central mystery still being the exact nature of the Chandrian and the
Amyr.
Typhoon
The story is narrated, not by Joe Lennox, but by a
journalist who works part time for MI6. I think this distance dulled my concern
for the characters, especially compared with Alex Milius, the hero of two other
Cumming novels. While Joe is a "better" person than Alex, I didn't get close
enough to Joe to develop for him the affection I have for Alex. And let's face
it there's something "off" about a guy who still isn't over a former
girlfriend after eight years.
As for the girlfriend, Isabella, being myself a
woman who grew up after the '50s, I find her aimlessness annoying rather than
endearing. She seems to have no interior life, no interests, and no goals.
Really, I thought Joe was well rid of her.
Vixen
Vixen is truly a bookish delight! I'd recommend it
not only for older teens but for adults as well. For those of you who enjoy
reading about the 1920's but want a young spin on things, this book is perfect
for you. But even if this isn't something you'd normally read, just give it a
try like me, it will amaze you. If you like reading debut authors, then make
sure Vixen is next on your list.
Wicked Fantasy
These characters are so well written that they leap
to life on the pages. Nicole Jordan's heroes, Trey being no exception, are
always strongly masculine, charming and determined in their passions. Antonia is
strengthened by intelligence, wit, grace and beauty. Ms. Jordan never fails to
deliver a book that is full of historical detail, heart-pounding danger and
breathtaking sensuality. The secondary characters are exceptionally written
without overpowering Trey and Antonia. WICKED FANTASY has my very highest
recommendation, an absolute must-read for lovers of sensual historical
romance.
Banquo's Ghosts
The writing is smart, crisp and funny. Mr. Lowry
and his ruthless, wordsmith-henchman, Korman, take every opportunity to skewer
liberal media types. In one hilarious scene, a socialite publisher (who looks
suspiciously like Arianna Huffington) conducts a press conference to welcome an
Iranian mission to the United Nations. The reporters toss rhetorical questions
like slow-motion mushballs over the plate:
"In your experience with international inspecting
bodies have you ever had the opportunity to raise the question about nuclear
inspections of United States facilities or Israeli facilities? And if so, when
and with whom both in Washington and Jerusalem?"
Bound: A Historical
Novel
Following on her first book about life in 18th
century Brewster, Cape Cod, "The Widow's War", Ms. Gunning has produced another
even more thoughtful and thought-provoking book in the same venue. This book has
more historical content but most importantly, the author continues to be able to
see, in what seems to be a surprisingly authentic tour de force, into the minds
of her 18th century characters. She never makes the mistake of applying 20th or
21st centuray mind-sets and reactions to her population. Ms. Gunning manages to
be very tough this is not chick lit on the other hand she can make us believe in
and care for her creations.....
Assassin's Apprentice
The Farseer Trilogy has become, by far, one of my
favorite sets of books. It all starts here with Assassin's Apprentice, a novel
telling the story of the bastard child of the man who would have been king. It
delves into his childhood, the hardships that lay in being a bastard in such a
medieval society, and the secret life he fell into.
The world of the Elderlings starts here and spins
into a wild ride from start to finish.
Assassin's Quest
It is a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy,
though, and probably the inevitable one. Why Hobb had to tell this story, I
don't know, but she accomplished what she set out to do. It's a good read and
necessary if you read the preceding books. It is not, however, their
equal.
Dreaming in English
I thought Dreaming in English was wonderful! I
enjoyed learning about Iranian customs, and was surprised by the bleak lives
Iranian women still endure. Seeing the world and "every day acts of rebellion"
through Tami's eyes is refreshing. Fitzgerald didn't sugarcoat Tami's story and
she's far from a perfect heroine. Like many woman, Tami struggles to stand up
for herself and battles her own self-worth. She's also an incredibly likable
character, who thinks and dreams deeply.
Love At 11
When Maddy graduated from Columbia University, she
was ready to change the world. She'd get a job at Newsline, meet a nice guy, and
live happily ever after with a real designer handbag on her arm. Five years
later, she's stuck producing puff pieces for the local News 9 San Diego where
"if it bleeds, it leads." She's still single, her family's falling apart, and so
is her knock-off Kate Spade.
Even a promotion complete with hot camera guy can't
seem to turn her luck around. After all, the promotion means working with the
most narcissistic anchor on the planet and hot camera guy Jamie? Well, he'd be
perfect...except for that pesky model/actress fiancee of his.
But just as Maddy's ready to give up on her dreams,
a secret scoop from her favorite knock-off purse guy has her suddenly chasing a
huge lead. And Jamie is right by her side in all the right ways. Can she bag the
bad guy in an exclusive expose, put her family back together again, and win
Jamie's heart? Stay tuned...it's the story of a lifetime.
Debutantes
It's 1923 and London is a whirl of jazz, dancing
and parties. Violet, Daisy, Poppy and Rose Derrington are desperate to be part
of it, but stuck in an enormous crumbling house in the country, with no money
and no fashionable dresses, the excitement seems a lifetime away. Luckily the
girls each have a plan for escaping their humdrum country life: Rose wants to be
a novelist, Poppy a jazz musician and Daisy a famous film director. Violet,
however, has only one ambition: to become the perfect Debutante, so that she can
go to London and catch the eye of Prince George, the most eligible bachelor in
the country. But a house as big and old as Beech Grove Manor hides many secrets,
and Daisy is about to uncover one so huge it could ruin all their plans - ruin
everything - forever.
The Jury Master
David Sloane is the best wrongful death attorney in
San Francisco. But despite his professional success, he's plagued by a nightmare
of a childhood he cannot consciously remember. When he recieves a package from a
White House confidant who then turns up dead, the contents reveal a history he
could never have imagined.
Countdown
When it reaches zero, you die.
#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen
sets her readers’ pulses racing once again in this relentless psychological
thriller of a young woman caught in a maze of secrets and stalked by a merciless
killer. The countdown begins the moment you open this riveting novel that only
grows more electrifying as the pages turn, more exciting as time runs out. . .
.
“Don’t kill her. She’s no good to us dead.” These
words haunt Jane MacGuire after a shocking attack shatters her world in an
instant. Was it a random kidnapping attempt–or the countdown to something far
more sinister?
Who is after her–and what do they want so badly
they’ll kill anyone in their way? That’s what Jane is determined to find out,
without the help of the police, the FBI, or her adoptive parents, forensic
sculptor Eve Duncan and her husband, Joe Quinn, of the Atlanta PD–because
whoever is after her won’t hesitate to hurt those she loves the most. Now Jane
will go on the run with the only man who may be more dangerous than those who
are pursuing her. A smuggler, a con man, and who knew what else, Mark Trevor had
his own mysterious reasons for wanting to keep Jane safe and out of the hands of
a killer obsessed with a two-thousand-year-old mystery that could rock the
modern-day world.
Orphaned at an early age, Jane grew up the hard
way, but she was given a new life, a loving family, and a chance to pursue her
interest in one of the greatest archaeological finds ever unearthed. Now someone
was trying to destroy that new life before it could even get started. The past
is returning with the kind of vengeance that knows no mercy. The countdown has
already begun, and it’s approaching zero faster than anyone thinks.
Absolute Rage
As the city sizzles under the early summer sun, New
York chief assistant D.A. Butch Karp and his family are happily vacationing on
Long Island's north shore. Their reverie changes to horror when they learn that
their beachfront neighbors, Rose and Ralph "Red" Heeney -- a coal miners' union
leader -- have been brutally murdered back home in tiny McCullensburg, West
Virginia. Irresistible force meets immovable object when the governor appoints
Karp special prosecutor to bring justice to the corrupt rural town, its ruthless
union boss, and his band of violent henchmen. Now, Karp finds himself not only
searching for the killers, but fighting to protect his own family from an evil
that runs as deep as the mines that fuel it.
