Countdown (Eve
Duncan)
When it reaches zero, you die.
#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen
sets her readers’ pulses racing once again in this relentless psychological
thriller of a young woman caught in a maze of secrets and stalked by a merciless
killer. The countdown begins the moment you open this riveting novel that only
grows more electrifying as the pages turn, more exciting as time runs out. . .
.
“Don’t kill her. She’s no good to us dead.” These
words haunt Jane MacGuire after a shocking attack shatters her world in an
instant. Was it a random kidnapping attempt–or the countdown to something far
more sinister?
Who is after her–and what do they want so badly
they’ll kill anyone in their way? That’s what Jane is determined to find out,
without the help of the police, the FBI, or her adoptive parents, forensic
sculptor Eve Duncan and her husband, Joe Quinn, of the Atlanta PD–because
whoever is after her won’t hesitate to hurt those she loves the most. Now Jane
will go on the run with the only man who may be more dangerous than those who
are pursuing her. A smuggler, a con man, and who knew what else, Mark Trevor had
his own mysterious reasons for wanting to keep Jane safe and out of the hands of
a killer obsessed with a two-thousand-year-old mystery that could rock the
modern-day world.
Orphaned at an early age, Jane grew up the hard
way, but she was given a new life, a loving family, and a chance to pursue her
interest in one of the greatest archaeological finds ever unearthed. Now someone
was trying to destroy that new life before it could even get started. The past
is returning with the kind of vengeance that knows no mercy. The countdown has
already begun, and it’s approaching zero faster than anyone thinks.
The ultimate moneymaking plan—buy the ancient,
run-down Scottish castle and turn it into a tourist destination. Toni Fraser and
her friends will put on reenactments combining fact and fiction, local history,
murder and an imaginary laird named Bruce MacNiall.
Just as someone arrives, claiming to actually be
Laird MacNiall—a tall, dark, formidable Scot somehow familiar to Toni—the bodies
of young women are found, dumped and forgotten in the nearby town.
But even stranger, how is it possible this laird
exists? Toni invented Bruce MacNiall for the performance…yet sinister, lifelike
dreams suggest he's connected to the recent deaths. Bruce claims he wants to
help catch the murderer. But even if she wants to, can Toni trust him…when her
visions seem to be coming from within the very eyes of the killer
himself?
When faith and facts collide, Jo March—a young
woman born into an Evangelical Christian dynasty—wrestles with questions about
who she is and how she fits into the weave of her faithful family. Chasing loose
threads that she hopes will lead to the truth, Jo sets off on an unlikely quest
across boundaries of language and religion, through chasms of sectarian divides
in the Muslim world. Against the backdrop of the War on Terror—travelling from
California to Chicago, Pakistan to Iraq—she delves deeply into the past,
encountering relatives, often for the first time, whose histories are
intricately intertwined with her own . . . only to learn that true spiritual
devotion is a broken field riddled with doubt and that nothing is ever as it
seems.
A story of forbidden love and familial dysfunction
that interweaves multiple generational and cultural viewpoints, The Sweetness of
Tears is a powerful reminder of the ties that bind us, the choices that divide
us, and the universal joys and tragedies that shape us all.
They were the most horrific crimes of a new
century: the murders of newborn innocents for which two British women were
hanged at Holloway Prison in1903. Decades later, mystery writer Josephine Tey
has decided to write a novel based on Amelia Sach and Annie Walters, the
notorious “Finchley baby farmers,” unaware that her research will entangle her
in the desperate hunt for a modern-day killer.
A young seamstress—an ex-convict determined to
reform—has been found brutally slain in the studio of Tey’s friends, the Motley
sisters, amid preparations for a star-studded charity gala. Despite initial
appearances, Inspector Archie Penrose is not convinced this murder is the result
of a long-standing domestic feud—and a horrific accident involving a second
young woman soon after supports his convictions. Now he and his friend Josephine
must unmask a sadistic killer before more blood flows—as the repercussions of
unthinkable crimes of the past reach out to destroy those left behind long after
justice has been served.

a year abroad with a traveling symphony, a scholarship to Julliard is within

past. Why did her mother abandon her? Who was her father? Are there faces

to find answers, Dell sets off on a secret journey into Oklahoma's Kiamichi
Mountains, drawn by the only remaining link to her origins- a father's Native
American name on her birth certificate. In the voices of her Choctaw ancestors,
she'll discover the keys to a future unlike anything she could have
imagined.
Living as a succubus has a bit of a learning curve,
but with sexy fallen angel Noah to scratch her sensual Itch, Jackie Brighton is
finally starting to feel ahead of the game. She almost doesn’t miss her gorgeous
vampire master Zane—or his sinful, teasing mouth. She’s trying to convince
herself of that, anyway.
But Jackie’s past mistakes catch up with her,
spinning her life out of control once more. Just as her friend Remy’s inner
demon comes out to play, Noah and Jackie are arrested by the angelic Serim
Council. When Jackie seizes the chance to escape, she falls right into Zane’s
waiting arms. As she’s pulled into a game of cat and mouse between vampires and
angels, she finds she must also choose between the two men in her life. Can she
decide between Noah and Zane, or will she lose everything she’s ever wanted?
Because there’s more at stake than just her heart. . . .
The daily rhythm of a veterinarian’s family in
rural New England is shaken when a hunting accident leaves their eldest son in a
coma. With the lives of his loved ones unhinged, the veterinarian struggles to
maintain stability while searching for the man responsible. But in the midst of
their great trial an unexpected visitor arrives, requesting a favor that will
have profound consequences—testing a loving father’s patience, humor, and
resolve and forcing husband and wife to come to terms with what “family” truly
means.
The Call is a gift from one of the most talented
and extraordinary voices in contemporary fiction—a unique and heartfelt portrait
of a family, poignant and rich in humor and imagination.
This is the third colourful and action-packed
Victorian detective novel about the exploits of agent Mary Quinn. Queen Victoria
has a little problem: a series of petty thefts from Buckingham Palace. She calls
the Agency for help, and they put Mary Quinn - on her first case as a
full-fledged agent - on the case. Going undercover as a domestic servant, Mary's
assignment seems simple enough. But before long, a scandal threatens to tear
apart the Royal Family. One of the Prince of Wales' irresponsible young friends
is murdered in scandalous circumstances and the story, if it became public,
would disgrace the young prince. Should the Queen hush things up or permit
justice to take its course? Mary's interest in this private matter soon becomes
deeply personal: the killer, a drug-addicted Chinese sailor, shares a name with
her long-lost father. Meanwhile, James Easton's engineering firm wins a contract
to repair some sewers beneath Buckingham Palace. Trouble is, there's a tunnel
that's not on the plans. Its purpose is unclear. But it seems to be very much in
use - it's just not clear by whom. These overlapping puzzles offer a perfect
opportunity for James and Mary to work together again. If they can still trust
one another. If they can suppress the emotions that still torture them. If Mary
can forget the sight of that exquisite blonde she sees in James'
drawing-room...In this, Mary's most personal case yet, she faces struggles at
every level - legal, political, personal. And she has everything to
lose.
With scores of millions of books in print,
translation into two dozen languages, and one of the most popular heroes in
contemporary fiction to his name, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jonathan
Kellerman is the unequivocal “master of the psychological thriller” (People). In
his newest novel Kellerman delivers a tour de force–poignant, dark, and
chilling–that illuminates a shadowy world where impulse rules.
Tanya Bigelow was a solemn little girl when Dr.
Alex Delaware successfully treated her obsessive-compulsive symptoms. Now, at
nineteen, she still seems older than her years–but her problems go beyond
hyper-maturity. Patty Bigelow, Tanya’s aunt and adoptive mother, has made a
deathbed confession of murder and urged the young woman to seek Delaware’s help.
The doctor recalls Patty as a selfless E.R. nurse struggling to raise a child on
her own–a woman seemingly incapable of the “terrible thing” she has admitted.
But for Tanya’s peace of mind, Delaware agrees to investigate, and he enlists
LAPD detective Milo Sturgis in the search for the phantom victim of a crime that
may never have occurred.
Armed with only the vaguest details, psychologist
and cop follow a trail twisting from L.A.’s sleaziest low-rent districts to its
overblown mansions, retracing Patty and Tanya’s nomadic and increasingly
puzzling life to the doorsteps of a sullen heroin addict; a randy real-estate
broker; and a brilliant, enigmatic physics student. Suddenly a very real murder
tears open a terrifying tunnel into the past, where secrets–and bodies–are
buried. As the tension mounts, Delaware and Sturgis uncover a tangled history of
desperation, vengeance, and death–a legacy of evil that refuses to
die.
Dramatic, action-packed, and filled with the
psychological detail that only Jonathan Kellerman can provide, Obsession is a
whodunit, a whydunit–and something unique: a did-it-even-happen? This is
Kellerman at his heart-racing best.

conflict with people he cares most deeply about.

drops dead after someone douses her tea leaves with bug killer, harried hostess
Judith and her irrepressible cousin Renie are left to clean up the mess. One of

however, and that might mean eliminating the nosy Ms. McMonigle as well. But

the games spies play. Since then he's been sailing charters in the islands. Now
he's called out of retirement for one last assignment. For Hawthorne is the only
man alive who can track down the world's most dangerous terrorist.
Now, with his life and the life of the President hanging in the balance,
Hawthorne must follow Amanya's serpentine trail, a path of seduction, betrayal,

Racing from a millionaire recluse's fortress to the social whirl of Palm
Beach and from the Oval Office to treacherous Caribbean waters, Hawthorne will
uncover a sinister network of well-placed men and women who exist to help this
consummate killer—and the shattering truth behind the Scorpio Illusion.
Despite all the crazy action, it's actually the characters and their
relationships that made the book so compelling and fun to read. Daniel Togg is
one of Mellick's most fully realized protagonists. Whether he's caught in an
awkward social situation with his brother Guy (a Fry Guy, McDonaldland's
equivalent of policemen) and Guy's spiteful half-wolf wife, giving instructions
on making alcohol out of various McDonald's products, or caught in a power play
of love between two wolf women, the reader feels right there with Daniel Togg.
He's the perfect guide through this strange and unforgettable world.
Highly recommended for fans of bizarro fiction and also those just reading
Mellick for the first time.

American Conspiracies: Lies, Lies, and More Dirty Lies that the
Government Tells Us
Seven weeks on the New York Times bestseller list: Jesse Ventura tells it
like it is, and this time he tackles our government’s biggest secrets. In this
explosive account of wrongful acts and ensuing cover-ups, Jesse Ventura takes a
systematic look at the wide gap between what the government knows and when the
government knows it, and what is revealed to the American people and when it is
revealed. The media is complicit in these acts of deception, often refusing to
consider alternate possibilities and dismissing voices that diverge from public
opinion. In American Conspiracies, Ventura looks closely at the theories that
have been presented over the years and examines the truth, as well as the
lies. The assassinations of Abraham Lincoln, the Kennedys, and Martin
Luther King Jr.—these cases and more need to be re-examined in Ventura’s eyes.
Was Watergate presented honestly, or was the CIA involved? Did the Republican
Party set out to purposefully steal two elections? Has all of the evidence on
9/11 been presented, or is there another angle that the media is afraid to
explore? And finally, is the collapse of today’s financial order and the bailout
plan by the Federal Reserve the widest-reaching conspiracy ever perpetrated?
Nothing gets by Jesse Ventura in American
'Tis was quite an interesting book. I looked forward to reading this after
I read "Angela'Ashes". I was impressed with Mr. McCourt's observations of the
American society and culture. Not only was he shocked at some things he saw and
experienced in his early years "just off the boat", but he also had to deal with
some self-esteem issues. He worked hard at overcoming some of his demons. I
noticed he found it quite difficult to forgive or forget in many instances which
one can attribute to the bitterness he felt towards the church, his father and
sometimes his mother. There were many lessons I got from reading 'Tis such as
sticking to ones dreams of a better education, a better life, family loyalty,
love and commitment, just to name a few. I do believe Mr. McCourt is a survivor
in all respects. His gift of story telling is superb and I commend him in all
his endeavors. Overall, this was a great sequel and I thank you Mr. McCourt for
hanging in there.
"Teacher Man" is an offbeat, steam-of-consciousness book about a man
shuffling through life, drifting into marriage and parenthood, and eventually
finding himself. Frank McCourt is honest and self-deprecating, freely admitting
that he was chronically disorganized and lacked self-discipline. He tells
poignant and funny tales about the women he loved, his supervisors and
colleagues, and most of all, his students. In his last teaching job, at
Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, McCourt faced bright and upwardly mobile
college-bound teenagers. There, he says, "I was finding my voice and my own
style of teaching." He still shunned traditional teaching methods, but the
students in Stuyvesant had so much energy that they inspired him to reach higher
than he ever had before; he enjoyed his greatest success in his creative writing
classes. McCourt himself might admit that he should have heeded the advice he
once gave to a prospective teacher: "Find what you love and do it."
Shooter: The Autobiography of the Top-Ranked Marine
Sniper
This account is well written and details the everyday feelings of
anticipation and sometimes frustration encountered in a tough job. That being
said, the author expresses satisfaction at a job well done. He earns the
gratitude of knowledgeable people without seeking it.
In Home, the story of Julie Andrews' early career tumbles out a rapid pace,
all the while displaying grace, wit, humour, and surprising honesty. It was
quite clear to me just how meticulously researched Home actually was. As this
book took ten years to complete, I doubt we'll see another so soon--although I
pray I'm wrong. I'd love a follow-up just to know what happened in the lives of
Dad, Mum, Pop, Aunt Joan, etc. after the book's completion. The characters are
that endearing. Home is one of the greatest memoirs I have ever had the pleasure
of reading. It's not hard to know why Julie Andrews and her films have become
such an important part of our lives.
Heaven is for Real: A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to
Heaven and Back
Who would be blessed by this book? I'd honestly say almost anyone. If
you've recently lost a loved one or maybe you are a mother who has lost a child
to miscarriage. You can find something here that will warm your heart and quite
possibly help ease your pain. This book is a sweet, touching, and amazing story.
I think you'll be blessed by it.
That said, you might wonder if I found anything in the book I didn't agree
with. That's a tough question. I found nothing I'd say was blatantly wrong or in
direct contradiction with the scriptures. There were a couple of things that
made me raise my eyebrow but I can't quote a verse that says Heaven couldn't be
like that, just a couple of things that didn't fit my expectation or
interpretation of what Heaven would be like. Those things might make you wonder
but I think you'll find they don't detract from what this book is meant to do,
strengthen your faith, encourage you in your walk with Christ, and maybe just
maybe long for Heaven just a little bit more.
Boys Will Be Boys: The Glory Days and Party Nights of the Dallas
Cowboys Dynasty
I loved this book and I actually read it. I read it straight through. I had
to go to the bathroom at work to finish it up. I enjoyed hearing about the off
the field experiences of the team members. As reported, it was salacious.
However, I enjoyed even more the making of the team. The trades and behind the
scene conversations that made this team what it was. Pearlman dug up amazing
details with extensive reporting. There may have been a few Cowboys who didn't
speak with Pearlman, but most of them did and had plenty to say. To quote Bill
Simmons
I'd like to say that this book is by far the BEST book i've ever read in my
life. Granted, I hate to read. I have the attention span of a peanut and no book
ever seems to 'suck me in'. HOWEVER this book had me from page 1 and I couldn't
put it down. I read the whole book in one sitting. The way Dana wrote this book
made me feel as if i was right there witnessing things as they unfolded. The
further I got in the book, the further I got into my own little world where
nothing else mattered but finishing this book. This book isn't just another sad
story about a man losing his life in Iraq, it was a story about love and family.
I have already told everyone I know about this book and I refused to let anyone
borrow it because i'm keeping it for life!! Totally worth reading!!
The scholarly discipline of Bullshit Studies has blossomed in the last
several years, fertilized by a number of critical works on the subject and the
growing importance of the issue across a wide range of professions. Now,
best-selling author and lifelong practitioner Stanley Bing enters the field with
a comprehensive look at the many attractive jobs now available to those who are
serious about their bullshit and prepared to dedicate their working life to
it.
What, Bing inquires, do a feng shui consultant, new media executive, wine
steward, department store greeter, and Vice President of the United States have
in common? What, too, are the actual duties performed by a McKinsey consultant?
Other than sitting around making people nervous? Could that possibly be his core
function? Likewise, what does an aromatherapist actually do, per se? Sniff
things and rub them on people, for big fragrant bucks? Is that all?
The answer in all cases is "Yes." They all have bullshit jobs.
These few, of course, are just the beginning. Across the length and breadth
of this shrinking globe, skillful bullshit artists have secured pleasant,
lucrative employment, and are enjoying themselves more than you are. In
virtually every occupation, from Advertising to Yoga Franchising, lucky
individuals who "work" in these coveted positions enjoy the best lives
imaginable -- they are paid well, they rarely break a sweat, and their
professions are highly respected, because nobody really knows what they
do.
At once funny, useful, and tolerably philosophical, this groundbreaking
work takes a close look at 100 bullshit jobs -- the money they bring with them,
the actual tasks and activities involved (if any), and famous and successful
examples of each position, who will provide the neophyte with inspiration. Most
crucially, Bing goes on to offer what others so far have not--a clear, concise
strategy to help job-seekers at every level reach for that brass ring, knowing
full well that it may be attached to the nose of a bull.
Shock Value: How a Few Eccentric Outsiders Gave Us Nightmares,
Conquered Hollywood, and Invented Modern Horror
If you are a horror-movie fan, and I am certainly one of them, Zinoman's
biography of the men behind Hollywood's second "golden age" of horror, the
1970s, is an essential read. "Shock Value" is a nice blend of what makes guys
like Wes Craven and George Romero tick - and how those ticks show up in their
movies. But I'm sure every fright-flick aficionado will have nitpicks with
Zinoman's critique, and so here are two of mine: Zinoman points out that most of
these directors flamed out after initial success, but he doesn't offer much of
an explanation for why that happened. William Friedkin ("The Exorcist"), Tobe
Hooper ("The Texas Chain Saw Massacre"), Romero ("Night of the Living Dead") ...
what the hell happened to these guys?
My other complaint is more subjective. I happen to believe that Bob Clark's
"Black Christmas" was the most terrifying movie of the decade, and that John
Carpenter (who, incidentally, comes off as a Grade-A jerk in this book)
shamelessly stole concepts and techniques from that movie to use in his
blockbuster "Halloween." Zinoman touches on this directorial "borrowing," but
inexcusably devotes little text to Clark's woefully underappreciated, eerie
masterpiece.
Pinched: How the Great Recession Has Narrowed Our Futures and What
We Can Do About It
The author offers potential solutions for addressing the issues facing the
economy today and turning the ship around (apologies for mixing the medicinal
and naval metaphors). I don't agree with all of the suggestions, and frankly, I
appreciate this book all the more for it. It's not partisan blather designed to
make you hate "them"--in fact, I would be hard-pressed to guess the politics of
the author. But it's a really thorough, informative description of the problems
we're facing today, and I'm better for having read it.
The Billionaire Who Wasn't: How Chuck Feeney Made and Gave Away a
Fortune Without Anyone Knowing
In 1988 Forbes Magazine hailed Chuck Feeney as the twenty-third richest
American alive. Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey to a blue-collar Irish-American
family during the Depression, a veteran of the Korean War, he had made a fortune
as co-founder of Duty Free Shoppers, the world's largest duty-free retail chain.
But secretly, Feeney had already transferred all his wealth to his foundation,
Atlantic Philanthropies. Only in 1997, when he sold his duty free interests, was
he "outed" as one of the greatest and most mysterious American philanthropists
in modern times. A frugal man who travels economy class and does not own a house
or a car, Feeney then went "underground" again, until he decided in 2005 to
cooperate in a biography to promote giving-while-living. Now in his
mid-seventies, he is determined his foundation should spend the remaining $4
billion in his lifetime. The Billionaire Who Wasn't is a tale of one of the
greatest untold retail triumphs of the twentieth century, and of what happens to
a unique man and his family when confronted with wealth beyond imagining.
The Eleventh Day: The Full Story of 9/11 and Osama bin
Laden
Writing with access to thousands of recently released official documents,
fresh interviews, and the perspective that can come only from a decade of
research and reflection, Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan deliver the first
panoramic, authoritative look back at 9/11.
For most living Americans, September 11, 2001, is the darkest date in the
nation’s history. What exactly happened? Could it have been prevented? How and
why did so much acrimony and bad information arise from the ashes of the World
Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a quiet field in Pennsylvania? And what remains
unresolved? What is certain: Discord and dissent continue to this day.
Beginning with the first brutal actions of the hijackers aboard American
Airlines Flight 11, The Eleventh Day tracks the precise sequence of events and
introduces the players: pilots, terrorists, the airliners’ passengers, and the
innocents who died on the ground. Drawing on previously classified records and
raw transcripts, Summers and Swan investigate the response of President Bush and
the U.S. military that day, and the failure to intercept the hijacked airliners.
They document the untruths told afterward by U.S. officials and, as a
counterpoint, thoroughly consider the contentions of the “9/11 truth” movement.
With meticulous research, they examine the personalities of the men behind the
onslaught, analyze the motives that drove them, and expose the U.S. intelligence
blunders that preceded the attacks. They note how afterward—without good
evidence—the Bush administration persisted in trying to link 9/11 to Iraq.
And they confront, finally, the question the 9/11 Commission’s report blurred:
Were the terrorists backed by powerful figures in another foreign nation—one the
U.S. had long viewed as a friend?
Riveting, revelatory, and unforgettable, thoroughly sourced and complete
with extensive endnotes, The Eleventh Day is the essential one-volume work on a
pivotal event in our history.

Duke: The Life and Image of John Wayne
Author Ronald L. Davis has given us a very informative, easy to read
biography of a surprisingly complex, some would say tortured soul. All the
highlights are there, Duke's less than perfect childhood, his early days as a
prop man for Fox Film, Duke's first big movie made in 1930, "The Big Trail", a
critical success but box office failure. Then the hungry decade where Wayne
honed his skills and waited for his "time" to come.
It came in 1939 when John Ford chose Duke to star in the ground breaking
"Stage Coach". Wayne and Ford then had more than 25 years of hit movies, all
these classics The Searchers, The Quiet Man, The cavalry trilogy etc. are
mentioned in the book.
Author Davis does not forget to explore Duke's three marriages, his loving
but sometimes stormy relationships with his seven children and several
high-profile affairs, particularly one with Marlene Dietrich that lasted for
over three years.
Wayne's last decade is also fully explored, his Oscar winning role in True
Grit, the poignant last movie, The Shootist, where his characters' struggle with
cancer reflected his real life situation.
Fully recommended.
Amy Winehouse: The Biography
I wanted to know about her family history and the nature of her
relationships with men. What made a women as talented as she is get strung out
on drugs?
The Ripple Effect: The Fate of Fresh Water in the Twenty-First
Century
AS ALEX PRUD’HOMME and his great-aunt Julia Child were completing their
collaboration on her memoir, My Life in France, they began to talk about the
French obsession with bottled water, which had finally spread to America. From
this spark of interest, Prud’homme began what would become an ambitious quest to
understand the evolving story of freshwater. What he found was shocking: as the
climate warms and world population grows, demand for water has surged, but
supplies of freshwater are static or dropping, and new threats to water quality
appear every day. The Ripple Effect is Prud’homme’s vivid and engaging inquiry
into the fate of freshwater in the twenty-first century.
The questions he sought to answer were urgent: Will there be enough water
to satisfy demand? What are the threats to its quality? What is the state of our
water infrastructure—both the pipes that bring us freshwater and the levees that
keep it out? How secure is our water supply from natural disasters and terrorist
attacks? Can we create new sources for our water supply through scientific
innovation? Is water a right like air or a commodity like oil—and who should
control the tap? Will the wars of the twenty-first century be fought over
water?
Like Daniel Yergin’s classic The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money &
Power, Prud’homme’s The Ripple Effect is a masterwork of investigation and
dramatic narrative. With striking instincts for a revelatory story, Prud’homme
introduces readers to an array of colorful, obsessive, brilliant—and sometimes
shadowy—characters through whom these issues come alive. Prud’homme traversed
the country, and he takes readers into the heart of the daily dramas that will
determine the future of this essential resource—from the alleged murder of a
water scientist in a New Jersey purification plant, to the epic confrontation
between salmon fishermen and copper miners in Alaska, to the poisoning of
Wisconsin wells, to the epidemic of intersex fish in the Chesapeake Bay, to the
wars over fracking for natural gas. Michael Pollan has changed the way we think
about the food we eat; Alex Prud’homme will change the way we think about the
water we drink. Informative and provocative, The Ripple Effect is a major
achievement.
The Elephant in the Room: Silence and Denial in Everyday
Life
I originally heard the author being interviwed on NPR and was intrigued by
the topic. Mr. Erubavel aptly laid out the "elephants" that he would discuss.
His topics were right on the mark and every reader can identify with one of his
examples either through personal or through a family member or friend's
experience.
When I finished reading the book, I wanted to hear more about "how to"
discuss these secrets especially when people seeking answers or resolution
before a loved one dies. I see this a lot working around hospice patients and
their families. Often long after the death of a friend ora family member; there
is still unfinished business amongst the survivors and that "elephant" perhaps
has grown even larger in size.
The Company We Keep: A Husband-and-Wife True-Life Spy
Story
When I started reading this book I found out that the movie "Syriana" was
based on Bob. I liked Syriana, but that was one confusing movie. I guess its
hard to write a true story when most of the details get removed by the CIA
because they are classified. You also have to take into account how many balls
these operatives have to keep juggling at the same time. It sounds like a very
hard job.
Being a CIA operative always seemed like a really cool job. Then I read
this book and I realize that dream is dead to me now. Not that I had any chance
of ever doing that, but now I realize if the CIA knocks on my door tomorrow with
a job offer I will have to turn them down.
Yarn
The sentences this man writes can inspire me for weeks. "I am the corporate
fashion slut of my dreams!" is one early example. Retail Warriors speak in
"WarTalk" that is like Calvin Klein perfume ad copy as written by Joseph Conrad.
There really is nothing quite like Yarn and Grey that I've found, and spending
time in Mr. Armstrong's carefully and thoroughly-wrought world is as luxurious
as fine cashmere kissing milk-white skin.
The Immorality Engine
The third Victorian Newbury-Hobbes mystery is an exciting alternate
historical thriller. The lead protagonists have personal issues as he has become
an opium eater and she is paralyzed by fears for her failing sister. The Sykes
enigma is deftly handled as The Immortality Engine is a wonderful steampunk who
and how investigation; vastly different yet as much fun as the occult themed The
Osiris Ritual.
Tantric Turtle
Far out on the rim of the Milky Way Galaxy, the starship 'Tantric Turtle'
and its not so intrepid crew (the down at heel duo of Skurgfurgler and Squeeg)
have encountered an item of space-salvage that may well wipe out their many
debts... If it doesn't wipe them out first, of course...
The involuntary immortals
A Golden Age science fiction masterpiece from a Hugo Award nominee writer!
Rog Phillips' The Involuntary Immortals, the story of a woman who finds herself
outliving her lovers - and the incredible peril she faces when she sets out to
discover the source of her involuntary immortality. "Science fiction readers who
have never been exposed to Roger Phillips Graham's inimitable brand of prose are
in for a real treat." Forrest Ackerman.
Cusp
The year is 2051. An enigmatic entity has its own plan for human evolution,
using the supercomputer known as CUSP-the first machine designed to run on the
software of the human mind...
Seeds of Memory
SPACE...once believed to be a vast and vacant void, has been found, in
fact, to be filled with all sorts of things--things that roam freely and at
random. Our little spaceship Earth is no longer as secure as we once thought it
to be. There are clouds of dust and gas so hot that their mere passing would
scour our little system of planets with a breath of death and destruction
complete. Clouds so massive that just their passing could throw all our little
planets from of their peaceful orbits into the deep cold of a sunless darkness
and fling our star out and on its way to being one of the eternal roamers of our
galaxy, or even throw it into an intergalactic journey to who-knows-where--Black
holes; blazars; blasts of deadly radiation from nearby super-novae; stars;
burned out hulks of stars; super-dense neutron stars; rocks (small or incredibly
large), and a host of other things--none of them welcome visitors.
Phalanx
The Soul Drinkers have been captured by the Imperial Fists, who intend to
see them put on trial on the Phalanx, the Fists' vast space fortress. Inside,
one of Iktinos’ faithful breaks under interrogation and reveals the location of
a vault hidden under Selaaca.
An Imperial Fists squad opens up an ancient vault below the planet's
surface. Inside the vault is Daenyathos, kept alive in his dreadnought body. He
is brought back to the Phalanx to face trial with the rest of the Soul
Drinkers.
The Departure
The Departure is a book of two halves; an exceptional first half and an
unimaginative and little boring second half where only Neal Asher's explosive
style and his take-no-prisoners attitude towards modern liberal pieties kept me
entertained and interested. On the other hand as a series debut it is also a
setup novel to some extent, but still the second half could have been compressed
a lot imho to read as a sf novel not as a standard thriller with cool
toys.
Still an A for the style, potential, attitude and the superb first half,
while hoping that now the scene is set we would get the full Neal Asher's
imagination too in the next novel
Subject Seven
When I read the description for Subject Seven I was pretty excited. It
seemed like it was exciting, action driven, and had just enough of a science
fiction element to make the books really great. Now after having read it I would
say Subject Seven a fun exciting book, but to truly review it you have to almost
break the book up into the first half and the second half of the book.
To me the first half of Subject Seven was gritty, jumpy, and almost seemed
unnecessary in parts. There was so much anguish for the kid characters
(especially Hunter), and most of the action wasn't seen, but was instead
witnessed after the fact, with readers only seeing the outcomes of these blood
and gore rampages. To me the first half of the book was about a 6-6.5 out of
10.
The Sagan Diary
I think John Scalzi did a marvelous job of capturing the essence of who
Jane Sagan is, which paves the way for her further adventures with John Perry in
Scalzi's next novel, The Last Colony. In spite of all the very enjoyable action
and adventure in this series, it is the romantic subplot that helps elevate the
books for me and this is a welcome addition to that aspect of the story.
Nekropolis
I will simply add one commentary for those not familiar with Maureen
McHugh's work. While Ms. McHugh is an excellent writer with distinctive and
elegant prose, and while exciting things do happen to characters in her books,
her books are virtually entirely character centered rather than plot centered.
Frequently the "action" part of the plot will be ignored in favor of following
what is more personally important to the character being followed. This is
particularly evident in her endings, which can be confusing to those of us used
to plot-driven novels. Her novels end (and Nekropolis is no exception) at the
point where the character makes a fundamental change, rather than at any given
point of plot. In China Mountain Zhang, the book ends just when the most
interesting plot parts would be starting. Here, the book goes on for a while
after a plot driven book would have stopped, and then ends when the main
character gets a hair cut - an insignificant point of plot, but a very
significant step of assimilation for our protagonist. This isn't a fault in the
books particularly, just something to be aware of if you haven't read her stuff
before.
Horizons
For twenty years Earth has been exploring the stars using faster-than-light
stardrives whereby a manmade black hole pulls the ship through space. Dangerous
to themselves and everything in the vicinity, the twenty-four starships, led by
the flagship Horizon, have opened up new worlds to colonize. Now mankind stands
on the brink of a momentous breakthrough: Hyperidor drives; faster-than-light
travel that is inexpensive, risk free, and available to all. All that stands in
the way of vast exploration and colonization is a corporate behemoth that wants
to see the hyperidor drive fail; no matter what the cost. It is left to the
Horizon's Captain Pamela Carlson and Third Engineer Mahlon Stewart to decipher
the means, motives and murders that threaten not only mankind's future in space
but the Horizon and its crew as well.
Kin
An interesting sci-fi short story about a boy who contacts an alien
assassin in the hopes of saving his sister’s life.
Bruce McAllister's "Kin" is a boy-meets-alien story that hits all the
standard buttons of that form. The boy in question—Kim— approaches the alien for
help. The alien 1st refuses but is later won over because it senses something
special in the boy. At the heart of the story is the interaction between Kim
& the alien, whom the boy manipulates by playing on his cultural taboos
& conventions, & for whom he feels equal measures of fascination,
revulsion & fear. One often hears readers complain that it is rare to
encounter convincing aliens in fiction, but it's just as rare to encounter
convincing & interesting children. McAllister manages both.
War in Heaven
The high-powered sequel to VETERAN sees an unlikely hero make an even more
unlikely return to take the reader back into a vividly rendered bleak future.
But a bleak future where there are still wonders: man travelling out into the
universe, Bladerunneresque cities hanging from the ceilings of vast caverns,
aliens that we can barely comprehend. Gavin Smith writes fast-moving, incredibly
violent SF thrillers but behind the violence and the thrills lies a carefully
thought out story and characters who have far more to them than first meets the
eye. Never one to avoid controversy Gavin Smith nevertheless invites you to
think beyond the initial shock of what you have just read. But in the meantime?
Another fire-fight, another chase another flight of imagination.
The Postmortal
Postmortal is not immortal; death still occurs from injury and disease,
suicide and murder. Death is a frequent subject of Farrell's blog as people
close to him are killed. After a few decades, Farrell becomes an end specialist
(sort of a futuristic Kevorkian, except that the government not only approves of
assisted suicide but rewards it with a tax rebate). It is difficult to fault
Farrell's role in the postmortal future. Compared, at least, to the roving
street gangs, organ thieves, and religious charlatans, Farrell's job seems both
necessary and altruistic.
Peace Army
I loved Peace Warrior and was hoping the sequel would be as good. It is
even better! Peace Army (book 2) deepens the herioc character of Grant
Justice and continues to weave a compelling and suspenseful story of
inter-stellar warfare. He adds yet another intriguing sentient civilization and
continues to explore the balance of aggression and peace in a culture. While the
story leads us to a third book (which I am looking forward to reading), there is
enough action, tension and resolution in this book to make it stand on its own.
While Hawk can tell a great story that moves along quickly and smoothly, he also
adds a philosophic depth that deals with the fundamental issues of human
(sentient) civilization. If you haven't read book 1, be sure to get that one
too. Thanks Steven, I'm hooked.
How Firm a Foundation
This book is intended for those readers who like really loooonnnngggg
series. The Honor Harrington series is over 20 books now if I remember right. I
don't expect this series to be any shorter. I just hope both Weber and I live to
reach the end. Neither of is a spring chicken anymore.
The Sky Road
Centuries after the catastrophic Deliverance, humanity is again reaching
into space. And Clovis, a young scholar working in the spaceship-construction
yard, could make the difference between success and failure. For his mysterious
new lover, Merrial, has seduced him into the idea of extrapolating the ship's
future from the dark archives of the past.
A past in which, centuries before, Myra Godwin faced the end of a different
space age--her rockets redundant, her people rebellious, and her borders
defenseless against the Sino-Soviet Union. As Myra appealed to the crumbling
West for help, she found history turning on her own strange past--and on the
terrible decisions she faces now.
The Sky Road is a fireworks display, a bravura performance, and the most
amazing novel yet by one of the powerful new voices in science fiction.
Engine City
WHO OWNS THE STARS?
For ten thousand years Nova Babylonia has been the greatest city of the
Second Sphere, an interstellar civilization of human and other beings who have
been secretly removed, throughout history, from Earth. Now humans from the
far reaches of the Sphere have come, to offer immortality-and to urge them to
build defenses against the alien invasion they know is coming.
As humans and aliens compete and conspire, the wheels of history will lathe
all the players into shapes new and surprising. The alien invasion will reach
New Babylon at last-led by the most alien figure of all.
Dark Light
The Second Sphere is thousands of light years away from Earth - if Earth
still exists. For Matt Cairns and the cosmonauts of the Bright Star, this
distant corner of the galaxy is their new home. But the Second Sphere is also
home to other civilisations, lifted from their worlds by a race of god-like
aliens. On Croatan, two of these civilisations live a precarious co-existence,
separated by eons of technological advance. The arrival of the Bright Star is an
event that may trigger disaster, for this is the first human-crewed starship to
arrive at the ancient colony. And all the time, hidden among the stars, the gods
are watching. They have always been watching.
Cosmonaut Keep
Matt Cairns is a 21st-century outlaw Programmer who takes on the shady jobs
no one else will touch. Against his better judgment, he accepts an assignment to
crack the Marshall Titov, a top-secret orbital station operated by the European
Space Agency. But what Matt will discover there will propel him on an
extraordinary and quite unexpected journey.
Gregor Cairns is an exobiology student and descendant of one of Terra
Nova's first families. Hopelessly infatuated with a lovely young trader's
daughter, he is unaware that his research partner, Elizabeth, has fallen in love
with him. Together, Gregor and Elizabeth confront the great work his family
began three centuries earlier-to rediscover the secret of interstellar
travel.
Ranging from a gritty near-future Earth to a distant alien world, Cosmonaut
Keep is contemporary science fiction at its highest level, a visionary epic
filled with daring individuals seeking a place for themselves in a vast,
complex, and enigmatic universe.
The Ethos Effect
I found this novel very slow moving and having very little action. The
space battles are short and not very detailed. The overall plot is a strung out
mystery of government agencies and cover-ups.
Invasion
The ending left me wanting, but not liking where the direction was going
from the last few paragraphs. Some of different mindset may have thought
differently, just my opinion. Overall, it was good, but there were some
places it could have been improved on.
Odyssey One
Excellent plot, with a refreshingly unique style. With so many cookie
cutter writers in the eBook universe now, it's nice to see a new author that
doesn't copy his style or technologies en mass from the prevailing popular
authors of the military sci-fi genre.
I would recommend this book without reservation, were it not for the
annoying and ever-present grammar, punctuation and typographical errors.
The First Swords: The Book of Swords Volumes 1, 2, &
3
Fred Saberhagen's Book of Swords novels have captivated fantasy readers for
more than a decade. Here, now available in one volume, are the three books that
started it all.
For a game the gods have given the world twelve Swords of Power so that
they might be amused as the nations battle for their possession. But Vulcan the
Smith has had his own little joke: the Swords can kill the gods themselves. What
started out as Divine Jest has become all too serious as the gods fight to
recover the Swords, and mortals discover that the mantle of power is more
delicious and more terrible than anything they could have imagined.
Ward Against Death
I loved all the medical talk (Ward is also a physician). I loved Celia, who
is a seriously kick-ass heroine, taking down attackers with incredible speed and
strength and skill. I loved the descriptions of Ward's necromancy, which
actually seems to take some, you know, concentration and power and focus. This
is a fantastic YA crossover debut, and if things veer a little too often towards
repetitive misunderstandings or romance novel territory, I'm okay with it since
the rest of the book is so great. Plus the lovesick fixation is actually coming
from Ward, since Celia really can't be bothered with this guy at first. I liked
the role reversal, and I liked how their relationship developed.
Spider's Revenge
Spider's Revenge was a wonderful coda to Estep's overture. All the
repetition comes to fruition by the close. Estep creates an elegant ending to
the series' biggest thread with a subtle simple symmetry between how things
began and finished. There is also a lovely little bookend of the last line
mimicing the first of the series, marking the end of the story, or hopefully the
beginning of the next chapter.
Sigvald
Sigvald the Magnificent is not by any means your typical hero - or
anti-hero for that matter. His total insanity is contagious, and is never a dull
read. He surrounds himself with different types of men and creatures that are
both horrific and insanely strange that I had to keep turning pages to find out
more about them.
My Unfair Godmother
Golden. This book is pure gold (considering its contents revolve around
turning straw to gold, I'd say this is spot-on) and I don't want any of you to
miss out on reading it, or its companion. Please, go buy this book. Right now.
Read it (and the first one!) and then put it on your shelf and/or share it with
your friends (if you can bear to let it go) and read it again and again and
again. It really is one of the best.
Half-Blood
Half-Blood is an enjoyable read...I was flipping pages to see what was
going to happen next. I don't remember Half-Blood having any dull moments, I was
engrossed from the start. I'll admit, some of the story lines were predictable
while others weren't. Initially I had it all set out in my head how it would
happen, but I didn't guess them all. Of course, I can't wait to pick up Pure
which is to be released in the spring so it isn't a horrible wait! I forgot to
mention, loved the bit of mythology we got with Half-Blood!
Fire Bound
A dangerous creature is on the loose. Evalle, Tzader and Quinn take a
VIPER team just outside of Atlanta for a sting operation that takes a deadly
turn. Killing the half-human creature would be easy, but national security
is on the line until the team can discover who created the monster, and whether
more like it are waiting in the wings to be unleashed on the human world. The op
goes bad with Beladors in the middle of it, and nothing turns out as expected,
least of all for Evalle.
Elixir
Hilary Duff has given paranormal a whole new spin. Elixir has a fresh
voice, great plot twists and an ending that left me wanting the next book in the
series. Though I couldn't get into the beginning of the book like I wanted to,
when the plot twists and the love triangle intensify with Clea, Sage and Ben, I
was hooked and couldn't stop reading it. A powerful centuries old secret reveals
some character twists, uncovers a great mythology and makes for a fascinating
plot.
Darkness Unbound
It isn't easy finding a good Urban Fantasy/Paranormal series, once you've
read all the popular ones. It was nice to discover Darkness Unbound since it is
certainly better than some of the others I've seen out there (though not the
best). This opening book has a good beginning and excellent world building.
Hopefully, it will get even better as time goes on. The potential is certainly
there.
Blood Trinity
In Blood Trinity, Dianna Love and Sherrilyn Kenyon have teamed up to bring
us an exciting new Urban Fantasy series. They took the Urban Fantasy genre and
made it their own with preternatural characters I haven't seen in other UF
novels. I loved the pet gargoyle, Feenix, even if he had a bit of a potty mouth
;) The world they all inhabit was brilliantly complex. Filled with fiction as
well as references to the lore of many different cultures. Blood Trinity is s a
fascinating read that kept me turning the pages wanting more.
Alterant
It was clear by the end of Blood Trinity that Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna
Love were setting readers up for a big series. It just wasn't clear HOW big that
series was going to be. The answer is, it's going to be huge. Love has become
known for her fantastic, twisted suspense plots and weaving a story that's a
complex puzzle. Kenyon's Dark Hunter/Dream Hunter romance series spans more than
20 books. Her ability to build worlds and characters is unmatched.
But this is urban fantasy, and these two authors are pulling out all the
stops, giving readers the best of all of it. The world is fascinating, with
characters, both good and evil, who are rich and evolving. Gods and goddesses,
witches, demons, and heroes and heroines both human and preternatural, and not a
cardboard cliche among them. Set that in an alternate Atlanta that feels
real--one you won't want to leave--then combine it with fast-paced action and
the human race in danger, and this writing team has raised the bar for urban
fantasy.
Alterant takes us deeper into the lives and loves of Evalle, Tzader and
Quinn, and I won't give spoilers, but I will say, be ready for an almost unfair
number of "OMG!" moments. Alterant is brand new, but I'm already impatient for
the next book.
The Emperor's Knife
There is a cancer at the heart of the mighty Cerani Empire: a plague that
attacks young and old, rich and poor alike. Geometric patterns spread across the
skin, until you die in agony, or become a Carrier, doing the bidding of an evil
intelligence, the Pattern Master. Anyone showing the tell-tale marks is put to
death; that is Emperor Beyon''s law...but now the pattern is running over the
Emperor's own arms. His body servants have been executed, he ignores his wives,
but he is doomed, for soon the pattern will reach his face. While Beyon''s
agents scour the land for a cure, Sarmin, the Emperor''s only surviving brother,
awaits his bride, Mesema, a windreader from the northern plains. Unused to the
Imperial Court''s stifling protocols and deadly intrigues, Mesema has no one to
turn to but an ageing imperial assassin, the Emperor''s Knife. As long-planned
conspiracies boil over into open violence, the invincible Pattern Master appears
from the deep desert. Now only three people stand in his way: a lost prince, a
world-weary killer, and a young girl from the steppes who saw a path in a
pattern once, among the waving grasses - a path that just might save them
all!
Falling Under
Falling Under is a fantastic debut novel. The story is beautifully written
and there's plenty of suspense and intrigue. Falling Under is a highly addictive
entry in the YA paranormal genre. I can hardly wait to fall Under the spell of
the next installment.
Cold Fire
Cat Barahal and her beloved cousin Bee think they have reached a safe place
to shelter. But the Cold Mages who are conspiring to take them prisoner are
closing in. The warlord who hopes to conquer all Europa is convinced their
destiny is to aid him, whether they want to or not. And the man Cat was forced
to marry is back, as vainly arrogant and annoyingly handsome as ever.
Worst of all, as Hallows' Night approaches, powers hidden deep within the
spirit world are rising. Cat must seek allies against these threats and figure
out who to trust, for if she makes the wrong choices, she'll lose
everything.
Only one thing is certain. When Hallows' Night comes the Wild Hunt will
ride and it feeds on mortal blood.
Vampire Crush
I swear, my life was always totally normal.
Normal house, normal family, normal school. My looks are average, I don't
have any superpowers, no one's showing up to tell me I'm a princess—you get the
picture. But when my junior year started, something not normal happened. There
were new kids at school . . . new kids with a wardrobe straight out of a
19th-century romance novel, and an inexplicable desire to stay at school until
sundown.
And on top of that, James Hallowell showed up. James, who stole my
sandwiches in fourth grade and teased me mercilessly through middle school.
James, who now seems to have the power to make my heart race any time he comes
near.
But something weird is going on. Because James rarely goes out during the
day. And he seems stronger than your typical guy. And he knows the new kids, all
of whom seem to be harboring some kind of deep secret. . . .
The Office of Shadow
Some may say that Sturges has become proficient as a fantasy author, but I
say he's mastered it. The Office of Shadow is a well-crafted work of art,
littered with mystery and espionage throughout. The World that Sturges has
designed for this novel is unique and original. The Shadows are a secret
organization, only believed to be a myth by most. But what is it that makes a
Shadow a Shadow? The intensive training? The secret knowledge they obtain that
is absent to others? The answer is an intriguing surprise worth waiting
for.
In this World, he has also provided a new spin on the idea of magic in the
form of twelve gifts, labeled by their significance (Glamour, Folding,
Leadership, Empathy, etc.). Along the way, the characters become puzzled by the
presence of a thirtenth gift, which is beyond their comprehension. It is
described in human terms as observing a colorless color or trying to divide by

If imagery were a commoner, Sturges would be its King. There are times when
reading that you'd think he literally visited this World, soaked it all in, and
then came home to write about it. From analyst-filled offices to flying cities
high in the sky, you are always right there in the middle of it with the
characters - learning as they learn, training as they train, and even fighting
when they fight.
The Office of Shadow is a direct sequel to Midwinter, Sturges' previous
novel. Midwinter is a nice introduction to the main protagonist, Lord
Silverdunn, but reading it is definitely not a necessity, as there are plenty of
references in The Office of Shadow that pop their little heads up and fill you
in on what previously took place. And don't be intimidated by what seem at first
to be difficult to pronounce names and places like Uvenchaud and Prythme because
it doesn't take long for them to start flowing with the rest of your
vocabulary.
Midwinter
Winter only comes to the land once in a hundred years. But the snow covers
ancient secrets: secrets that could topple a kingdom.
Mauritaine was a war hero, a Captain in the Seelie Army. Then he was
accused of treason and sentenced to life without parole at Crere Sulace, a dark
and ancient prison in the mountains, far from the City Emerald. But now the
Seelie Queen--Regina Titania herself--has offered him one last chance to redeem
himself, an opportunity to regain his freedom and his honor.
Unfortunately, it s a suicide mission, which is why only Mauritaine and the
few prisoners he trusts enough to accompany him, would even dare attempt it.
Raieve, beautiful and harsh, an emissary from a foreign land caught in the wrong
place at the wrong time. Perrin Alt, Lord Silverdun, a nobleman imprisoned as a
result of political intrigues so Byzantine that not even he understands them.
Brian Satterly, a human physicist, apprehended searching for the human victims
of the faery changeling trade.
Meanwhile, dark forces are at work at home and abroad. In the Seelie
kingdom, the reluctant soldier Purane-Es burns with hatred for Mauritaine, and
plots to steal from him the one thing that remains to him: his wife. Across the
border, the black artist Hy Pezho courts the whim of Mab, offering a deadly
weapon that could allow the Unseelie in their flying cities to crush Titania and
her army once and for all.
With time running out, Mauritaine and his companions must cross the deadly
Contested Lands filled with dire magical fallout from wars past. They will
confront mounted patrols, brigands, and a traitor in their midst. And before
they reach their destination, as the Unseelie Armies led by Queen Mab approach
the border, Mauritaine must decide between his own freedom and the fate of the
very land that has forsaken him.
The Shadow at the Gate
A lot of focus in first half or so of this volume seems to be on characters
other than Jute, arguably the main character in volume one, though it does drop
in on him occasionally at first and more often as the story progresses. A number
of characters who had lesser roles in Hawk And His Boy get to spend a lot more
time on stage and come into their own in this volume. Owain Gawinn and Levoreth
happily get a lot of stage time here.
Graced
This book was SO good, i waited and waited for it to come out, when it
finally did I was SO EXCITED! I read it in two days, it was great! Perfect third
book, and since this is part 1, I'm guessing when there'll be a part 2?
Grounded
This was a very good follow up to book 1. I enjoyed the character
development that happened. Harpies are so different from the traditional
supernatural creatures popular right now. It's nice to have something new and
refreshing to read about! I'm also glad that Mason finally made a choice about
who he really loves! It will ne very interesting to see what happens next! With
the transfer of magic and a new leader! Sorry no spoilers here! You'll have to
read to see who they are! Happy reading!
Goliath
Goliath is an outstanding finale to this imaginative and vivid steampunk
trilogy. Once again, Westerfeld masterfully balances the intrigue and politics
of the great war between the Darwinists and Clankers with Alek and Deryn's
dynamic and unique friendship. The tensions between the two run high as Alek
finally discovers the truth about Deryn, and there is plenty of drama as they
try to figure where they stand with each other. Alek also experiences many
personal conflicts as he puts his trust in a weapon in order to bring an end to
the war, and is ultimately tested to his limits. A few old characters resurface
as complications arise and provide some well-needed insight and comic relief to
the story. Everything in Goliath builds to an electrifying confrontation with a
breathless and very satisfactory ending. This final book is full of adventure,
plenty of skulking about, moral dilemmas, and no shortage of action. It will be
very hard to let go of Alek, Deryn, the perspicacious loris, and the rest of
Westerfeld's magnificent world.
Stripped
The epilogue leaves open a door for a sequel. But I doubt if I will be
looking it up, unless Alexa and Matt become more forceful than they were in this
book. It is a shame because I think this author writes really, really well. But
I was not compelled to stay in her world.
Also important to note: this is not a paranormal romance. While Alexa and
Matt are acknowledged lovers and end up together, the romance portion of the
book is almost nil. This is pure UF
Eden
For those who love the love triangle, this book has you covered. For the
most part, I always know whose team I'm on, but Taylor really made this
difficult. Both guys were awesome. West truly had me going at first: He's
gorgeous, strong, and has so much to offer Eve, but Avian has all the same
qualities LOL I mean, both of them love her to death and would do anything for
her, and there's not a flaw I could find with either one. I loved their banter
and tug of war they had going over Eve. Neither of them was willing to back
down. In the end, I'm glad she finally made a decision between them and we don't
have to wait for the next book to discover this like most stories.
The plot was strong also. Although a lot of the story centered on the love
triangle, I thought the action and twists involving the Fallen was well
balanced. Eve's transformation through the story was evident, and I was left
satisfied by the end, except for the future of one character. I really want to
know what's going to become of him. If there's going to be a second book, I
think it will have a lot of him, or at least I'm hoping! This is a great read
and I recommend it to anyone who loves Post-Apocalyptic, Dystopian, smoldering
love triangles, and something original in YA.
Interface
From his triumphant debut with Snow Crash to the stunning success of his
latest novel, Quicksilver, Neal Stephenson has quickly become the voice of a
generation. In this now-classic thriller, he and fellow author J. Frederick
George tell a shocking tale with an all-too plausible premise.
There's no way William A. Cozzano can lose the upcoming presidential
election. He's a likable midwestern governor with one insidious advantage—an
advantage provided by a shadowy group of backers. A biochip implanted in his
head hardwires him to a computerized polling system. The mood of the electorate
is channeled directly into his brain. Forget issues. Forget policy. Cozzano is
more than the perfect candidate. He's a special effect.
Skeleton Letters
Although amateur sleuths coincidentally finding a corpse and feeling
compelled to behave foolishly by investigating are not new concepts (see Death
Swatch), readers will enjoy the latest scrapbooking mystery (see Fiber &
Brimstone) as the BFFs place themselves in danger with their inquiry. The cozy
is fun to follow and there are plenty of scrapbooking tips. Fans of the series
will root for the dynamic duo as they work the case of a regular murdered in a
church.
Shoe Done It
Shoe Done It is a fun somewhat satirical amateur sleuth tale that mocks at
the compulsive obsessive behavior of fashionista as a stiletto by any other name
is not just footwear. The first Accessories Mystery stars a heroine who is the
Einstein of fashion and uses her knowledge of clothing to investigate who would
literally murder to possess customized stilettos. Cozy readers will enjoy this
entertaining San Francisco treat.
Midnight and the Meaning of Love
Chiasa the Blazin' Blasian was Midnights backbone, a warrior, a challenge,
his comrade. She's the woman the you wish you could be more like. I feel like
there is also a hidden message, that Bible verse that went something like be
lead by faith and not by sight and you can conquer anything. That seems to be
the way Midnight lives his life, now he's muslim, but he made sacrifices and
gave his god all the praise and credit everytime he had the chance. I'd only
imagine whatever God you believe in, if you had that much faith and loyalty to
him all the obstacles in your life you would overcome. Overall, I felt like
I took a journey to JAPAN and KOREA myself in the 4 days it took for me to read
this book. And overall, that's what a book is suppose to do.
Liver Let Die
Jordan heads off on her first assingment and Jordan explains to her waiter,
JT, that she does not eat red meat and ask what else is on the menu that is
good. She goes with JT's suggestion and when he returns with the entree, she
asks what is it. Well the thought of being able to enjoy foie gras, ranks up
there with red meat. She promtly stuff it in her first and offers her
compliments. In the morning she is awakend to find that her waiter is found dead
in the lobby of her aprtment with her name and phone number in his pocket.
The author skillfully provides the reader with several possible killers,
all with reason to do it. Could it be the college football star, the local
lawyer who might also have a bookie business on the side. Jordan and her
neighbor must pull out their playbooks and work on their game plan before time
expires---for someone else.
A very fun read and I am looking forward to the next book.
Flipped Out
Though I had suspicions, and figured out most of the clues, I didn't know
who had committed the crime for sure until it was revealed. That alone makes
Jennie Bentley's book worth the read. The projects in the back of the book
are perfect for both beginners and those with a little more experience. I
highly recommend Flipped Out to fans of cozy mysteries and to all those brave
enough to renovate anything.
The More the Terrier
This series is really packs more of a one-two punch, they stories are fun
and entertaining but they also make us aware of a huge over population of pets
in the United States. I almost feel we should have a Bob Barker moment to remind
ourselves "to have your pets spayed or neutered". I also feel that adopting and
giving pets "forever homes" is an uplifting experience. We have 3 rescued
kitties under our roof. If you are looking for a pet to love, start out at a
shelter and save a life that will love you unconditionally immediately.
Like cozy mysteries, like animals, you will love this book! Your invisible
tails will be wagging with delight!!!!
The Vampire Tapestry
Weyland's relationships with the humans he encounters are so different that
each chapter varies wildly in tone. I personally found Mark's chapter the most
powerful, with a wonderful picture of the terror and aching conscience of a
truly good boy, and Floria's curiously anticlimatic considering her obvious
significance. Everyone will have a favorite.
Though not quite perfect, a welcome addition to any vampire fiction
collection.
The Terror
The story is told from the perspective of several officers and crewmen.
Simmons brings each of them to life with as much intricate detail as he provides
to the frigid landscape. However, Francis Crozier, the captain of the Terror, is
definitely the main character. Without spoiling anything, it's evident from the
first chapter that there will be a showdown between Crozier and the creature,
but the ending isn't what you'll expect.
The Terror is an excellent story of misery, betrayal and redemption (heavy
on the misery). If you decide to read it, do so in the winter. The cold and the
wind howling outside your window will help you empathize with the plight of the
characters and you'll gain a greater appreciation for the comforts of hearth and
home.
Tom Clancy's Endwar: The Hunted
The twist that they have in this was confusing. I haven't the slightest
idea what exactly it was. Was it the German who was searching for the Snow
Maiden, or was it the fight at the end, where the Snow Maiden's employers
creating the trap for the German, forcing the Snow Maiden to work with him after
a failed attempt at destroying him. Or was it where Major Alice Dennison was
found to be a traitor? I'm not sure.
Despite the confusion, I liked the book. Some of the character were
interesting, including the Snow Maiden. They were obviously fleshed out and I
enjoyed being able to find out more about the main antagonist.
Velvet
Velvet is a laundress in a Victorian steam laundry. With both her mother
and father dead, she is an orphan and has to rely upon her own wits to make a
living. The laundry's work is back-breaking and Velvet is desperate to create a
better life for herself. Then Velvet is noticed by Madame Savoya, a famed
medium, who asks Velvet to come to work for her. Velvet is dazzled at first by
the young yet beautifully dressed and bejewelled Madame. But soon Velvet
realises that Madame Savoya is not all that she says she is, and Velvet's very
life is in danger ...A romantic and thrillingly exciting new novel from an
acclaimed and much loved historical writer for teens.
Wisdom's Kiss
In something of a sequel to "Princess Ben" comes a thoroughly intelligent
story that makes a fine mark in the fairy tale world. It's enchanting, it's fun,
it's creative. It's worth a read for anyone who loves fairy tales. Romance and
intrigue are explained through a variety of voices.
Which leads into what is truly novel about this story. This book is a clip
of history... which means it's told through diary entries, letters,
encyclopedias, and all other sorts of historical documents. It's not irritating
in the least, but fun and surprisingly easy to follow. I felt it added quite a
bit of charm to the storytelling.
This is just a great book altogether. The story is wonderful, the
characters are interesting, and the format is a lot of fun.
The Predators
A sinister ring of child abductors sends the FBI on a frenzied manhunt to
save an ambassador’s daughter before it’s too late
The people in the car don’t recognize Mary as anything special. They see
the skinny ten-year-old as just another young girl on the streets of Brussels,
not as the daughter of a US ambassador. The black car stops and Mary, used to
having a chauffeur, climbs aboard. Before she knows what’s happening, she is on
her way to a mansion in Antwerp with a specially designed, child-sized cell. She
has been abducted.
Now, a team of FBI agents, along with Europe’s
foremost psychological profiler, are on the hunt for the girl’s captors. They
must find her before time runs out and Mary is murdered or worse.
The Queen's Devotion
Although Plaidy uses the same basic descriptions in her queens novels the
flavor of each is distinct. You can still understand the background and history
within the emotions of the women. I enjoy her writings.
The Scorch Trials
The Scorch Trials is a jaw-dropping thriller filled with the most insane
and unexpected twists. Dashner will blow your mind with everything that WICKED
puts the Gladers through and for every question raised, we get the teeniest
insight into what is really going on. It will keep you on the edge of your
seat...
The Long Glasgow Kiss
Well plotted, Lennox pulls the threads of all the separate cases together,
serving many masters and both sides of the law. Lennox himself is a complex
character. He hates what the war has done to him. He stumbles through a moral
morass, seeking what few shreds of his humanity remain. He uses women, then
mires himself in self-loathing for doing just that. He reads (though not
Hemingway) and tries to be a good tenant to his war-widowed landlord, Fiona
White.
While the first book in the series, Lennox, was equally good, Russell
avoids the "second book" doldrums and produces a work not only every bit as
good, but better. The characters have more depth, the plot and morals more
nuanced. The first book explored the Jewish ghetto of Glasgow, the second
introduces the life of the pikeys, the Irish and European gypsies who live in
wagons and caravans in the countryside.
Eve
I really liked the premise for this book. It seems very real that a sudden
tragedy could take so many lives so quickly that the government would break
down. It also seems very real that in the crisis, people would trust someone who
took too much power in the name of survive and with the promise of it only
lasting for a short time. I could totally see this happening. I could also see
the rebellion taking hold as people saw the results of such power. I loved the
set-up.
The whole book was a quick read, I finished it in a day. I quickly became
interested in Eve and her world. She was poorly educated to real life even
though she excelled in the academics taught at her "school". The things she knew
didn't seem to help her survive once she found herself outside of the school. I
really wanted to see more growth from her. Her decisions were poor at the
beginning of the book and I hoped that would improve over the course of the book
as she experienced living in the wild. Unfortunately, Eve didn't grow that way.
As a matter of fact, she continually made bad choice to the point that I wanted
to scream at her to stop. So much was done and lost in the name of protecting
Eve. I hope in book two, she starts paying some of that back.
American Boy
AMERICAN BOY is, in the end, an old tale made new and fresh through the
story-telling skills of a master hand at fiction. Larry Watson burst onto the
book scene nearly twenty years ago with his first novel, MONTANA 1948., a
shocking and beautiful book. His latest offering shows he is still at the top of
his game. If you appreciate serious literary fiction, READ THIS BOOK!
The Death Cure
The Death Cure by James Dashner is a heart stopping, edge of your seat
movel. We are sent through the maze, journeyed across the scorch, and in the
end, we found paradise. was all my questions answered? no... I feel that dashner
could have maybe added another few chapters to tie the book together a little
better, but i feel that the ending was okay. however, this novel kind of reminds
me of the movie I Am Legend....not the novel.
The Dovekeepers
First I admit to being a huge Alice Hoffman fan. This book, however, is not
Hoffman's typical book. It is as the book description says very ambitious. For
me, Hoffman's ambitions succeeded beyond my imagination. I loved this book, the
characters, the setting, the debates it caused in my own mind over faith and
religion.
Still, I think this book requires a lot of patience to read. It isn't a
genre fiction novel and is long because it was designed to be that way in order
to give the characters and the history involved as much space as possible. This
is not a book to sit down with and try to read during commercials while watching
television. It's a book that requires time and effort--but that time and effor
will be well worth it! Just don't expect an average Alice Hoffman book and read
it for what it is--a great literary fiction novel. Few writers could bring off
this book at all and certainly not with Hoffman's writing expertise. Parts of
the book are just brilliantly written and worth reading just for that beauty
alone.
Overall, fantastic read. Already wishing there was a new Alice Hoffman book
on the horizon!
61 A.D.
I loved the first two Bachiyr novels ("33 AD" and "Saying Goodbye To The
Sun"). This one is the sequel to the first book, "33 AD". McAfee has created an
alternative world of organized vampirism with some very interesting characters.
I love the way he makes these fictional historical characters seem real. Lots of
suspense, twists and turns. I've read tons of horror and action books in my
life, some good, some so so, and some not so good. McAfee is a "for real" type
of talent. I rate his first three vampire books as very good. Highly
recommended.
The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To
This is a more complex novel than many of the reviews up here seem to
suggest. I read it as a series of a young man's awakenings; first to the power
of his own creativity, then to love and sex, then to the idea of manhood, then
to his own capacity for cruelty and finally, and finally into a very sad
understanding of just how corrupt the world can be. He can't awaken from this
final revelation, and it makes this book tragic, not comic. There is a lot of
humor, but this is not a madcap teen romp with science fiction overtones. This
is a very sad story about a young man's complete loss of innocence, not because
he does drugs and has sex, but because he is done a great injustice at the hands
of the larger world and must do what it demands of him in order to stay alive.
But telling his story is in its own way a subversive statement of bravery and
faith, and offers the hope of change.
Very highly recommended.
Sherlock Holmes and the Zombie Problem
This is an interesting take on Sherlock Holmes, it updates the fabulous
traditional Holmes story with a hard, violent edge. Its a real page
turner...
A Beautiful Dark
The polar opposite to Asher's wild ways was the always in control and rule
abiding Devin. For the majority of the book Devin was quiet and reserved except
for a few fleeting moments when we got to see behind his walls. What I found
interesting was that, from a glance, Devin would seem to be nothing like Asher,
but as I got further in the book I definitely got the feeling that Devin was a
lot more like Asher then he should have been. I feel like he craved to be able
to break the rules, no matter how much he tried to hide it. I think that in the
end, Devin's refusal to break the rules really turned out to be his biggest
flaw.
The plot of A Beautiful Dark was great! It kept me interested and on my
toes, and it was an awesome take on angels. I liked getting to learn a bit about
the history of the angels and can't wait to learn more about them in the future
books in this series! Also, Jocelyn Davies' writing was awesome, I felt like
this book was so easy to read in I would find myself getting sucked in and then
being astonished by how much I'd read without even realizing it! I would
definitely recommend this book to anyone!
Before Ever After
From the first page to the last, the book hold's the reader's heart right
in its hands, never letting go as it carries you through to the end (or is it a
beginning, really?) of the tale.
It's a fantastic tale with history twisted with our modern mundane lives
and seasoned by something older than time.
Whisper of Warning
From the opening chapter I was hooked. Having read book one in the series,
Thread of Fear, I already knew that Courtney attracts trouble but this situation
takes the cake. I loved the fact that the action starts immediately and the rest
of the book keeps up the pace.
The Last Town on Earth
I am not exactly sure which I found more shocking - the fact that there
actually were armed guards protecting the borders of a town from a deadly virus,
or that this is only Thomas Mullen's first novel. The Last Town on Earth is
easily the most fascinating and intense book I've read this year. The vivid,
relentless descriptions of the infection are truly terrifying and they managed
to keep me in constant fear throughout. Mullen does an excellent job showing how
an entire town could justify something that on the surface, seems fundamentally
wrong. How far would you go to protect your family and your own life? Is it
worth killing for? Would you be willing to turn your back on your freedom, your
country? The Last Town on Earth explores the ramifications of such choices to
their inevitably grim conclusions. Wholeheartedly recommended, you will not be
disappointed!
The Lady of the Rivers
This is the third novel in Philippa's series The Cousins' War, but
chronologically (so far anyway) sets the scene and characters for the whole
series. What I enjoy the most about her books is their authenticity...her
characters do not use 21st century slang or mannerisms, a feature which makes me
cringe with some historical novels.Philippa has clearly researched her topic and
does not hide or water down how conditions were in those days...fleas, disease,
death, women used as pawns in their families with no rights...it may offend our
present day values but is true and honest. I highly recommend this book and all
her writing...
Sixteen Brides
Stephanie Grace Whitson always produces good writing as she carries you
along on the journey with these women. Based on historical facts, she weaves the
stories of these brides into the landscape of the prairie of Nebraska that
leaves one at the end of the story with a nod and sigh of satisfaction.
Lady of the English
This is a complicated piece of history with many players, but I loved
keeping the main focus on the relationship between Matilda and Adeliza and found
it a very effective way of showing the reader a different side of Matilda, who
had a reputation for being a bit of a termagant. Adeliza's devotion to the
church and her charities was also an excellent way to show the more human
aspects of the conflict and the great toll it took on the country. I very much
enjoyed watching Matilda's relationship with her son and heir, especially after
his *invasion* of England at fourteen. As with all of her novels, Chadwick
excels at bringing the medieval period to life - prepare to let yourself be
sucked into another century for the weekend. Thumbs up on the author's notes at
the end where she tells us what is fact and what has been surmised. Lastly, a
very big thumbs up for staying true to her character's devotion to God, honor
and duty and not succumbing to the temptation of throwing in an affair that
never happened just to spice up one's book. Five stars.
Love in a Warm Climate
It's a delightful reading. It was hard to put down, even though I was in
the middle of a high priority project. All along I was given useful tips for
life, body and relationship. It is a very invigorating and refreshing chick
read. I would recommend it to any woman who strives through life and would still
like to stay femme fatale and be successful in all aspects of life...
Frozen Moment
For me `Frozen Moments' lacks the beautiful language - almost poetic at
times - that makes Mankell's `Wallander' crime series so special. Cedar's book
felt to me that on the one hand there wasn't enough left out to engage my
imagination, and on the other hand there was too much character and background
description that didn't add to the plot and was fairly ordinary, without the
magic of extraordinary prose.
Frost
Frost is one of those novels that walks the line between the psychological
and the fantastical. I am always intrigued by stories like these, because there
is something so alluring about the possibilities in each of these explanations,
but often I end up disappointed. I am happy to say that debut author Baer's
novel was not disappointing in the least. I was so impressed by Baer's ability
to get inside the sometimes confusion mind of protagonist Leena. In addition,
her fluid writing and attention to detail combined with a well paced and
intriguing plot made Frost so enthralling to read. However, the real reason why
Baer succeeded in my mind where other writers failed is because of the ending of
her book. This is one of those stories fueled by ambiguity, but I am the type of
reader who is irritated when ambiguity is all that remains at the end, as in
Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma. Baer doesn't necessarily give an absolute
explanation for the mysterious events that transpire in her story, but she gives
enough to work with so that readers can pick one of the explanations,
psychological or fantastical, and feel secure that there is enough evidence
within the story to back their opinions. This is what made Frost so much more
satisfying to me than other stories like it. I applaud Baer for a lovely and
wonderfully written novel and the beginning of a very promising writing
career.
Dirty Little Secrets
I would never want to enter a real world like Lucy's, but I now understand
the horror of her home life. I found myself holding my breath in passages,
wanting to help her overcome the effects of her mother's hoarding but I was
powerless to do so. Instead, I came face to face with Lucy's panic and shame. If
ever there was a book that created empathy for such a misunderstood illness,
DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS is it.
Deeper
Deeper is one of those rare books that just grabs your attention and
doesn't let go until you see The End on the last page. I loved this book! It
reminds me of Creature From the Black Lagoon mixed in with H.P. Lovecraft and
Moore's own thrills, all wrapped together in a neat bundle of excellent
storytelling that made this title stand out on the bookshelf. I'll make this
easy for you. If you want to read a great book with lots of action, great plots,
and adventure, pick this one up. Deeper won't disappoint you; it'll only drag
you under.

Useful Download Info
Instructions for Downloading Using The Host's Free Service
If you want to download items but would rather not purchase the host's premium service, they do offer a free download option (generally advertised as 'slow' download), click that link on their site and follow the instructions
Instructions for reading .mobi (Kindle etc) files on your PC
To download and open .mobi book files and read them on your PC follow these instructions: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=dig_arl_box?ie=UTF8&docId=1000425503
Instructions for Opening Files, Once Downloaded
After downloading the file(s), you will find that most are saved in ZIP format or in .RAR format, if you do not have the program to open these .RAR files on your computer (eg; Winzip.com) here are two programs you can get for FREE: http://www.jzip.com/ or http://peazip.sourceforge.net/index.html
Once you have done this, you can read all those
extra books that are only in epub format... easy!
Note: Program to open comics (.cbr
files)
If you would like to read the comics you will need
to open .cbr files. The is a free program that will allow you to read them. Go
to http://comical.sourceforge.net/ and download the program
(links are in the bottom right panel). Save the program to your computer, then,
once downloaded, double click on it and install the
program
Note for Movie Downloaders: Some
movies, after downloading, will not play on 'Windows Media Player' (for example,
you can hear sound but no video!), so we suggest that you download an extra
player like 'Gom Media Player' (http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_download.html)
or 'Real Player/ (http://www.real.com/realplayer).
Both are free to use!. Once you have downloaded the movie, simply 'right click' on the movie file and 'open with' the player of your choice
Extra Note for .MKV Movie
Files:
If you find a movie in .MKV format where GOM Player
will play the movie but has no soundtrack, try a different FREE .MKV player,
like this one: http://mkv-player.en.softonic.com/download
Zipped files are easy to open. Simply click on the book links, taking you directly to the
download page. Click on the 'Free User' button (each host is a little different, but all
offer free download, you just have to wait a few seconds!), click the download button and
your book will start to download. Once fully downloaded, your computer will ask you if you
want to OPEN or SAVE the file.
We suggest that you first SAVE the file to a place on your computer, eg; My Documents.
Once you have done this, you can easily find the file, and by clicking on it, it will
open. You will then see all the smaller files inside. You can either select all of these
at once (click on the top one, then hold down your SHIFT key while you click on the bottom
one, then click EXTRACT. It will then ask you where to save the files to (we suggest My
Documents for now unless you have already created a new folder and place you would like to
keep them). The programme will then save the files.
If you prefer, You can also OPEN the file straight away. It will then start to gradually
load the file. Once it is ready (100% loaded), you can then click OPEN again, and you will
see all the smaller files in the box. Select one or ALL of these files, and click the
'EXTRACT TO' link. You will then be given a choice of places you can save the UNZIPPED
files.
Please note: We are a 'Non-Profit' organisation, our mission is solely
to help those people who struggle to make ends meet, by providing them with a
few little treats they could normally not afford! We are not the 'hosts' of any
books etc, neither did we upload them to any hosting provider. We simply search
for links to books etc, that are freely available on the web and share our
findings with our members, however, IF YOU HAVE A DMCA or ABUSE COMPLAINT about
a particular item listed on our pages (eg; if you are the author/publisher!) and
would like it removed, please contact the host's 'Filepost' and complete a DMCA
notice then the particular download link to your item will become 'innactive'
